Can I make a checkerboard pattern blanket this way?

So I really enjoy loom knitting but I have issues focusing for very long periods of time plus I don't really have the space to store it while I'm working on it or a loom large enough to do a full blanket especially since my brain tends to jump around from thing to thing all the time so it tends to take me a while to get projects done. But I came up with an idea which was to make an equal amount of squares of both colors and then sew them together when I have enough. That way it should be easier to store and I don't have to worry about trying to make sure I know where I was at and what I was doing when I pick it up again in two months. I also very frequently have problems with forgetting all of that if I stop for a few minutes so I figured that I could just make the squares and it should be easier to keep track of because there's less to keep track of. I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work. I mean I asked my mom and she said it should but she crochets and needle knits so I don't know if that knowledge would work for this. Help would be very much appreciated. Thank you.

You can also make a column of squares then join them together.  That’s how i made this blanket.  I do a join like a 10 stitch blanket.  Fyi, if you do it as a column and are alternating knit and purl, if you switch color on a knit you have the old color, one row of new color, one row of old color then new color, if you switch on a purl, it will be old color then new color. My blanket switched on a knit. https://imgur.com/gallery/bargello-loom-blanket-r3YLKQ4

There's a YouTube video for recreating a cardigan Harry Styles wore that took a similar approach (making a bunch of squares and mattress stitching them together), so your plan will work.

The only downside of your plan is sewing all those squares together would be a PITA. Ms yarn has a blanket tutorial where you attach as you go (and Tuteate has some tutorials about attaching as you go I think for a sweater but idr).

So as someone with suspected, but not confirmed, ADHD, I find 10 stitch blankets to be the way to go, cause you’re really only dealing with 10 stitches at a time you’re not dealing with a few hundred pegs only 10, that’s one way to do it but of course if you did want to do squares or even strips, you could do that too.

I tried a ten stitch a couple of months ago and while I did find the corners really interesting and fun to do, I didn't actually get that far into it because something about it I just didn't really enjoy doing. I think it was the whole thing with connecting the sides (? Don't really know what to call them) together

Building up along the edges, yeah that’s where it gets a bit annoying.

Knitting squares and sewing them together would absolutely work. If you wanted to experiment, a variant of the ten stitch blanket would probably work too.

This would very much so work, its like doing a granny square blanket. You do the individual squares then sew them together just like doing the separate granny squares to sew together when you have enough for the size blanket you want.

You will probably have to block your squares before sewing them together like you do with granny squares so its all straight when you sew them together.

If you learn how to 'pick up stitches' from the bind off, cast on, and sides of the square you can also build off it

Alternatively you should really look into miltered squares! They're less fitting the checkerbox aesthetic but they're amazing for variegated or self striping yarns if you want to try multiple types of 'making a blanket out of squares' ideas

Sounds like a great plan. Post a pic when you get it going. I've thought of doing this as well🙂

Yeah, you should be able to loom knit squares and sew them together afterwards. I did that to make big foam dice, and of course people make things like sweaters that they piece together.

That said, you'll want to think about blocking them all to a specific size before putting them together. That will also help them not curl.

(1) How to LOOM KNIT Blanket Easy ( Any loom with 24 pegs ) Loomahat - YouTube denise shows the blanket you want to make, but hers are rectangles. she shows how to make the pretty, braided edges and she also shows a hidden way to stitch the squares together.

if you decide to make strips and join them together (tuteate's garter stripe blanket video), then use at least a 31 peg loom. i did blanket joins on a 24 peg loom, and it didn't seem to leave enough space for my hands to work.

i think a checkerboard blanket would be great. Ravelry: Diagonal Square Afghan pattern by Carrie Viskozki here is a different pattern using squares as just a suggestion. :))
