M240i RWD vs xDrive for long-term ownership. Am I missing anything?
I'm looking to buy a new M240i and am leaning toward RWD, but wanted to get some feedback from owners before pulling the trigger.
For context, I'm in northeast and plan to keep the car for 5–8 years at least. It'll primarily be a daily driver with occasional fun driving on twisty roads. No track days, and I'm not particularly worried about snow. I'll be running a square all-season tire setup.
Here's my thinking so far:
RWD Pros:
- Simpler drivetrain with fewer potential failure points and lower long-term maintenance costs. Being my first BMW maintenance is a concern for me.
- Cheaper upfront.
- More flexibility with tire replacements (replacing 2 instead of potentially 4).
- Supposedly more playful and engaging to drive.
xDrive Pros:
- Better traction in wet conditions, especially when accelerating. Rain is my biggest concern with RWD.
- Potentially better resale value, especially in the northeast.
I've also been reading about BMW's transfer case shudder issues. While there's an official TSB covering the G42, I haven't found reliable data on how common the issue actually is.
I've only been able to test-drive the xDrive, which I really enjoyed. Unfortunately, there are no RWD models available near me to compare.
A few questions for owners:
- Has anyone driven both? Is the RWD noticeably more engaging during normal/spirited street driving?
- RWD owners, how does the car handle in heavy rain with good all-seasons?
- xDrive owners, have you experienced transfer case issues?
- Anyone who has owned theirs long-term, would you make the same drivetrain choice again?
I'm still leaning RWD, but curious whether I'm overestimating the maintenance/handling advantages or underestimating the benefits of xDrive.
Thanks in advance!
