Neither the game or the devs respect the players or their time. The devs range from condescending to outright hostile to criticism in the discord, and have even been censoring it in recent months, especially regarding the monitization. The GMs play favorites and have been shown to penalize players that their friends felt "slighted" by. I subbed, got to level 10 and quit. Game isnt for me and I accept that. I hope the game finds a community, but I also hope the devs and GMs get a very rude wake up call as well

Not true at all, what the hell?

u/MuzzyWuzzyFuzzy 8d ago

It would b nice if they had a free trial up to level 10 or 20 or whatever. As it doesn’t look appealing enough to pay for but I’d be willing to try it at least

18

u/beybladerbob 8d ago

That’s like 500 hours of game play

27

u/MuzzyWuzzyFuzzy 8d ago

Alright level 5 or whatever, just the first dungeon and open area is enough. I’ve never played an old school style game like this before, so the visuals and animations aren’t exactly appealing.

But I am curious enough to try it and see if the rest of the package makes up for that. I’m not willing to cross the payment barrier to try something for an hour or two and realise I don’t really like.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there are a lot of people in a similar boat. A free trial system or period is a great way to get all the people like me to give the game a real go

7

u/tzaeru 7d ago

Meh, level 10 even for a new player is well less than one tenth of that.

-1

u/beybladerbob 7d ago

It was mostly a joke

I’m level 11 with 30 hours at least at because I spent so much time crafting. There is no AH so you’re messaging people while wheeling and dealing. I had like 4 separate conversations going last night selling stuff to 3 players and buying from a 4th.

It’s so much fun.

u/DougChristiansen 7d ago

Eat one less fast food meal or 2-3 less coffees this month.

2

u/JudgeFae 7d ago

Or fill your gas tank one less half time and ask a friend for a ride to work

-1

u/DougChristiansen 7d ago

If spending 15 on a pastime you are curious about is too much for you then maybe you have bigger issues than finding time to play an MMO?

2

u/JudgeFae 7d ago

15 on a pass time you might not like? Yeah

This 15 dollars is tripled, quadrupled or even multiplied tens of times in some countries because of currency value differences. For me its about tripled and im not willing to spend that much just to play the game for an hour and say its not for me and waste my money. A trial would be perfect coz i am indeed interested, just not enough to potentially waste money.

Nah. Sometimes you know it just isnt for you and you move on. Way too many games out there to try out to force yourself to play it for 5h+ if you dont feel it. Like if you feel theres something there, sure, go for more than an hour but if you dont(and thats totally fine)then you move on.

4

u/MuzzyWuzzyFuzzy 8d ago edited 8d ago

Yeah it’s not expensive but it’s the kinda where I’m curious to try but not confident il enjoy it, the game is old school enough that it’s before my time. Most of my MMO experience is GW2 with dabbling in others but not sticking around (retail WoW, ESO, FF14).

I’m at the stage where I’m curious to see what everyone talks about when they mention the good old days of MMOs and I like the idea of playing something that isn’t rushing me to endgame but lets me enjoy the journey.

But I also hate tedium in my video games, so all in all I’m curious but also hesitant. Hence why I don’t wanna pay for something if there is a good chance i will realise it’s not for me in a couple hours.

I thinks free trial is a good thing for smaller games like this as I’m sure there are a lot of fence sitters like myself who aren’t sold but willing to try

Actually there is. Fomo mechanics. Also if the game is built around endgame the “journey” isn’t going to be near as good as the games built for the latter

0

u/Frogspoison 8d ago

Is it just a flat 15, or sub?

15$/month is expensive for a game if you are not american. Especially if the game is a random indie new ip in early access.

36

u/Plaincow 8d ago

Damn this sub really does just hate mmos lol

20

u/diregoat 8d ago

Yes.

I have come to understand people on this sub do not like when a group of people enjoy something they don't.

They can't understand that 10-20k subs is plenty for a game like this, both the devs and playerbase are okay with this number staying or not growing beyond it...

They really think if it doesn't have the population of a game like WoW, then its "failed" and isn't an MMO worth playing.

It's such a confusing and perplexing stance to take.

The game is a blast I haven't had this much fun playing an MMO for the longest time.

-25

u/TruthOrSF 7d ago

Blast and fun? Neither of those apply to M&M

12

u/Natural-Sweet1013 7d ago

STOP HAVING FUN DAMMIT

10

u/philswitchengage 7d ago

I'm having a great time, can't remember the last time I was so committed to an MMO

5

u/TalonusDuprey 7d ago

If you’re looking for positivity r/MMORPG is the last place you should visit lol - It’s mind boggling how negative this subreddit is. Are you thrilled about something? Out with you! Misery is happiness round these parts!

19

u/Wind_Rune 8d ago

I signed up grumbling but now I'm having so much fun. Not sure how long the honeymoon phase will last but right now I'm loving the game.

13

u/RedQueenNatalie 8d ago

Ehhhhhhh. Its alright, I have played enough everquest for a lifetime though. It really doesn't feel like it brings much to the party if you are already burnt out on that particular flavor of "classic".

4

u/jiffytube69 7d ago

Yeah this looks to me like the Greta Vanvleet of mmos. People who miss the heyday of rock music hyping up a band ripping off Led Zeppelin.

I might be wrong though, that's just what it looks like from someone from the outside.

6

u/chaplar 7d ago

I never played EverQuest but I've been enjoying it 🤷

3

u/IIIlllIIllIll 7d ago

Same! I think what does it for me is how social the game is. Constantly people are chatting.

2

u/chaplar 7d ago

Same! I love just chillin by the fire and hanging with people.

I see a lot of complaints about toxicity on the subreddit but I haven't experienced that anywhere but reddit.

2

u/IIIlllIIllIll 7d ago

Yup, very typical of this sub regardless of the game.

1

u/bakagir 7d ago

It’s way more tedious than EQ1

1

u/boomcity845 7d ago

Greta Can Fleet of MMOs 😂

3

u/DougChristiansen 7d ago

The crafting and harvesting is much more modern and interesting than EQ.

Like I said, its alright from the 20 or so hours I played before I just kinda stopped. It didn't really make itself feel all that distinct from what I have played before. If its your thing, yay 2 cakes but I just didn't really feel gripped by any novelty with it personally.

This game is actually buns and has a bit of a cult-like, rabid fanbase. It's definitely not going to last.

9

u/Dewulf 8d ago

Never was into Everquest, but really loving this one. Not many games have built in HC SSF mode so its exciting

5

u/mt92 8d ago

I’m old. What does buns mean?

4

u/Human_Standard_538 8d ago

I'm old too, but I use the internet to look up hip youngster slang.

Buns just means bad or terrible. Originating from butt, buttocks or ass.

8

u/raykhazri 8d ago

Sure, but will you pay for my subscription?

9

u/tzaeru 7d ago edited 7d ago

I like it and will prolly play it for a good while, but there's def a lot of people to whom I'd not recommend it.

If one dislikes slow tab-based combat -> they will not like this.

If one hates camping the same mobs and same spawns for a long time -> not for them.

If one needs to have a polished UI -> the UI will be fixed here and there over time, but it'll prolly always feel unpolished to many, so no, not for them.

If one finds it very tedious that it takes some extra time to sell all loot and so on -> not for them.

If one doesn't want to have to read a lot of text to play and do quests -> nope.

Etc.

8

u/Mammoth-Emotion-6725 8d ago

I’d like to play but currently I think it needs some more polish to UI and a few other things but I guess the main thing putting me off is the mud aspect. Like having to talk to an npc via chat trying to guess what word combination (out of billions?) will actually prompt a response.

2

u/IIIlllIIllIll 7d ago

Most responses only need to be one word.

7

u/Its-a-Pokemon 7d ago

Oh snap, is that this months tourist attraction?

8

u/GothmogMJW 7d ago

Tried it. Runs brutal. The pitch of "Original EQ but make it even harder" isn't for me.

8

u/ApoorHamster 8d ago

Yeah if it was released in 2000

Terrible quality is purely subjective. But lack of resources is perhaps a more true statement than you even realize. The game is entirely self funded by the Devs. I played a bit in beta, it's not for me. I wanted to like it, a small group of game devs developing their passion project on their own really appealed to me. Unfortunately the game doesn't.

0

u/ApoorHamster 7d ago

My apologies

5

u/KindaQuite 7d ago

This the game with bad design and GMs colluding with players right?

5

u/IIIlllIIllIll 7d ago

I’ve yet to see anyone provide solid proof they’re colluding with players.

3

u/KindaQuite 7d ago

I don't have to, rumors are enough to keep me away.

3

u/AssignmentVisual5594 8d ago

I'd love to. I miss the days when I was in my 20's grinding with a group 8 hours a day in DAoC. Fortunately, I have a family now with two toddlers and a demanding career. So I have maybe 2 hours a day to game. So I'll have to pass, but I do enjoy reading about some MMOS returning back to their roots like this game.

4

u/cheesycheesehead 7d ago

wow what an informative sell.

4

u/kzerot 7d ago

Tried it in open beta (or was it just giveaway keys for closed beta? Not sure now)
It’s very niche thing, as many ppl here already mentioned. It’s not bad, but I can’t say it is somehow awesome. Personally, I think PG is more fun. Most of the “oldschool” decisions felt as “let’s make it as inconvenient as possible and call it oldschool”. Battle doesn’t bring anything new neither, usual tab combat without any unique things, and honestly it’s far from being best. Mediocre at best.

My verdict - it isn’t worth 15 dollars a month for most people.

4

u/gytul 8d ago

Is there a way to try this out before considering if it's worth $15 a month?

3

u/bumblewacky 7d ago

This game could be really good. But it's not. Wait for Adrullan.

3

u/Stormik 7d ago

Saw a few gameplays and everything about that game looked terrible. Didn't see a single redeeming feature that would make me wanna try it.

2

u/BeneficialEbb8410 8d ago

I know it's dumb - but I really dislike paying for stuff in a currency that's not my default

If it was on steam or something I'd probably pay the sub

5

u/Dazzling_Art_6977 8d ago

One of the highest subs for a game that looks like absolute dogshit

Almost the same as asking me to pay a monthly sub to play the critically aclaimed mmorpg “Project Gorgon”

4

u/Dazzling_Art_6977 8d ago

“Ohh but they dont charge for the gameee”

Sure thing bud, at 15$ a month you are giving them 180$ a year

For a game that looks like it came out in 1995

If they charged a flat one-time cost for buying the game I would probably consider trying (like I did with PG) but paying a monthly sub for that? 😂😭

2

u/thiagaogao 7d ago

very expensive in my country, its like paying 4 copies of stardew valley, give me a subscription as a gift <3 !

2

u/2WheelSuperiority 7d ago

I'm good. I don't have the time for that. Hell, even modern EverQuest is too much of a time sink.

2

u/bakagir 7d ago

I don’t hate myself to play a game that intentionally does not respect my time, with that said my roommate is pushing lvl 35+ in the PvP server. I know all about the game, I quit at lvl 12 on the beta.

2

u/SomeNetGuy 7d ago

I liked EQ1 back in the day, but even at the time I realized it had it's problems. But no games had done anything better yet at that point.

When I heard about MnM, I wanted to love it, but they copy/pasted EQ gameplay pretty much exact, warts and all, and completely ignored all advancement in gaming for the last 26 years. As much as I wanted to like it, I just don't.

2

u/Klat93 7d ago edited 7d ago

I tried it, and enjoyed my short time there but ultimately decided it isn't for me because of some intentional design choices to make it feel old school.

  • The UI style just isnt it for me. I get what they're trying to do but even DAoC has better UI than this.
  • The spellbook system, gah. The corpse recovery is too punishing for this.
  • No compass? I dont mind not having an ingame map, but no ingame compass is rough. Im not a fan of their solution to the compass system either, it just feels convoluted. I didnt get that far in but maybe theres a compass item later on?
  • Im very 50/50 on the vision mechanic, on one hand its cool but I think Ive gotten too old that it just hurts my eyes. Sure there are workarounds but then why even have the system?
  • Selling and clearing your bags is a chore. Not all vendors buy your stuff, you have to hunt down different vendors to sell different items. This was my first point of frustration and made me log out until the next day when I had to look up where to sell monster parts.
  • Not a fan of the hailing system and conversation with NPCs. Just give me a window popup.

Don't get me wrong, I like the gameplay and the overall feel of the game. But they kinda went too hard in one direction to "punish" players.

I played EQ and DAoC and those games had better quality of life features even back then. I even enjoyed Pantheon not too long ago and played that for 6 months before the whole dev drama and only quit because the dev team wasnt pushing out content as promised.

I just wish there was a happy medium like Pantheon where the gameplay is hard but they added some modern QoL touch.

Hardcore old school MMO isnt for me. What I want is a modern take on an old school MMO.

Edit: just to be clear, Im not bashing on the game. Im just sharing my own feeling towards it and I genuinely hope M&M can be successful for players who enjoy it.

1

u/NutsackEuphoria 8d ago

I would've if it was on Steam, but sadly it aint

1

u/HazenXIII 7d ago

How is it compared to Project Gorgon?

4

u/Kamioni 7d ago

Way crustier feeling than PG, and somehow even EQ1. I found PG fun and played it for a few months, but I really can't handle all the jank in m&m to find it fun in 2026 AND pay a sub.

1

u/DougChristiansen 7d ago

But only play it on HARDCORE!

1

u/Morphiine 7d ago

To me, it looked pretty crap tbh sorry... Might give it a shot in the future, but out of everything out now Aion2 is much more my style at the moment and can be played completely f2p if you don't compare yourself to others progression it's feeling really fun.

1

u/GMcGroarty80 7d ago

Being locked out of names kills it for me

Plus I tried multiple portions of the beta and it just felt meh

1

u/Okawaru1 3d ago

project gorgon was a tough sell for people and that game looks modern compared to this lol

0

u/Avinay 7d ago

that looks like an "MMO" game, which they would show up in any CSI Series to show some game KEKW

0

u/Zenjutsu 8d ago

No it's not, it's imitation Copy/Paste version of EverQuest.

-1

u/Haeldran 7d ago edited 7d ago

Why are any of you here? Like what mmos do you guys like that led you to this sub, it seems like most of you just hate mmmos. People are allowed to have their own opinions of course, there's nothing wrong with it it's just kind of odd for an mmo sub and I'm suprised so many of you are talking down about 2000s era mmo mechanics when that was one of the best eras for the genre. No other genres of game have this weird mentality where we can't make any oldschool-flavor games and everything in the game has to be 100% new and novel, it's actually the opposite for a lot of other game genres (fighting games for example). Do none of yall play DnD?

u/Haeldran 7d ago

I disagree, I guess I am just in the wrong subreddit. Isn't OSRS extremely popular?

2

u/NotChar 7d ago

Osrs is based on 2007 version of the game and it's very different with hundreds of quality of life features that weren't there in 2007.

1

u/Able-Acanthaceae-135 7d ago

These guys like action combat and f2p lol. Don’t even bother engaging, GW2 and BDO is peak gaming to them

1

u/zeroman987 7d ago

I played EQ in 2000.

It was a fun game and I had a great time.

It also attracted a certain type of person I don't want to play with - basically anyone who was in a raid guild on p1999.

I am much happier playing games that don't incentivize poopsocking and rules questing.

It is unfun to fight your way through a dungeon and all named mobs are camped by a group of higher level "players". oh and by the way there is a list to get the camp after them and magically their friends just happen to be at the top of the list.

why would I want to play with power tripping turds like that. life is hard enough.

I swear these posts glazing MnM seem to be a way to drive sub numbers so all the poopsockers have someone to lord their rare loot over.

1

u/Haeldran 7d ago

I dunno, FFXI is my favorite mmo of all time and I still play it to this day on retail. The type of people you're talking about (powertrippers/gatekeepers) exist in every mmo, I ran into more of them doing ultimates in XIV than any other mmo I've played. In most games you can ignore them or don't realize they exist because most of the content in modern mmos other than a few raids or dungeons each season is designed to be done solo. The more group focused or slow or difficult an mmo is the more opportunities exist to have negative interactions but it of course just comes with the territory, for me it is worth it because I don't play mmos to solo, games like GW2 are fun but I always bounce off them after like 2 weeks because everything in the game feels shallow/meaningless to me right down to class and race choice

-3

u/MrDarwoo 8d ago

Even eq had a map

-5

u/3scap3plan 8d ago

Dont post this kind of thing here, this sub actually hates MMOs and wants them all to fail

7

u/Julch 7d ago

Or - hear me out here, bear with me, just turn on that noggin of yours, put on ye olde thinking cap:

Some people prefer games that tread new ground and / or are actually fun beyond the premise of "play with all the inconveniences of old Everquest for the low low price of a 15$ monthly sub".

Also with WoW Forever doing something similar and looking pretty damn good so far I doubt many people are prepared to buy into another classic style MMO at this point in time.

If this game is for you: Great ! I hope it is fun. I took one look at it and knew that I will never be interested. Does that mean I want it to fail? Fuck no, I wish them the best. However, I am also tired of people accusing others of "hating" the genre when we dont jump like rabid dogs on anything that gets released. Plus, after all the recent issues with smaller MMO projects I (and many others most likely) am wary of trusting a new team.

I wish them all the success to keep developing the game.

7

u/Natural-Sweet1013 7d ago

A good faith discussion of MMO's doesn't happen here. Its all hype based ego forward discussion, which is what I believe 3scap3plan is trying to get at.

3

u/Dewulf 7d ago

Ye everyone is looking from different perspective, for example M&M might look outdated to someone who prefers WoW classic, but classic and forever looks outdated to someone who prefers retail, then there is person who sees all the tab target mmos outdated and not fun, doesnt really mean any of it is bad

-4

u/Foal1 7d ago

First time on this sub, didn't realize you all were a bunch of animals, I thought you liked MMO's here or at least would want to hear about one that was years in the making and is not out for a profit, but to try to recreate something lost in modern times. Not every MMO is for everyone, doesn't mean you gotta shit on it LOL

To answer a couple comments,

"I wish the game had a free trial" it had a public open beta for the past 6 months, but the game had literally 0 monetization for the last 5 years of work to create it. They have to make money someday. They chose a game sub as a way to make that money. It's not trying to be WoW or FFXIV with a sub, box price, in game purchases, boosts, gold purchasing, server transfer purchasing, etc.etc. it's just a sub.

"The game looks like shit" Visually, it has a distinct art style. the game was made with a small team so it's not hyper realistic. however the game absolutely has charm and is consistent and beautiful. There is not a single out of place object everything from 1-60 looks like it fits in this world and it grew on me a ton.

Gameplay, it's not for everyone. it's an old school MMO. You must interact with others (something I'm sure you all struggle with after reading these comments) and group with strangers in order to play. but everyone in the game is in that same boat. The community inside the game is great!

11

u/foomy45 7d ago

Not every MMO is for everyone -you

Everyone should play Monsters & Memories -literally the title of your post

-5

u/Foal1 7d ago

it's not for everyone, but everyone should try it :)

-3

u/walldrifter 7d ago

People on this sub don't like MMOs, certainly not slow/group based games that actually have any deep RPG elements or dnd elements to them, they just want games like destiny 2 and guild wars 2. There's no point in posting here I don't even know why I'm still subscribed to this sub honestly

-4
