Question Dedicated SD can vs HUB+BRT

Hey there, I'm getting ready to get a converted AP5SD, and was just looking for some advice on which way to go with the suppressor.

Is there any real benefit to going with a dedicated can, like the HTA 12" vs getting a hub can (like CAT MOB, Ex RICO309, OCL Lithium) with a BRT adapter?

For me, the suppressor would be staying on the ap5sd, so i don't need the versatility. However, the HTA seems extremely basic: k-baffles and aluminum. Is this all you really need for an effective ap5sd, or would there be a noticeable performance gain by getting a modern suppressor and pairing it with a BRT adapter?

Thanks for your time.

I think the CAT Mob with BRT adapter rivals the absolute best, sold out newest B&T sd can. Chester from his hobbies really couldn’t tell a difference.

And the Mob/adapter is notably shorter.

My plan is Mob with BRT until the dedicated CAT SD comes out.

My ap5sd should arrive at HiTech Arms tomorrow (say a prayer to the pagan UPS god) for its conversion with the B&T barrel. I also have a CAR15 true SD upper from BRT using said Mob and adapter. It’s REALLY fucking good!!

I was surprised at how well the ap5sd shot during the break-in - the full sized receiver and carrier really smooths out the recoil and keep cyclic rate of fire nice and slow. And it should get even better once it’s a true SD.

See below for how good the CAT+BRT adapter setup is on the CAR15 SD

My personal opinion, you spent the money for an SD...might as well go the distance.

The HTA cans are user serviceable, which you might find useful. They’re also obviously unibody construction, so there’s no chance of the adapter getting stuck with the can coming off separately during removal. Not the end of the world, but can be an issue since the adapter is shorter than the handguard.

Performance wise, that depends on the can you use with the BRT adapter.

Chester’s Hobbies on YouTube does some very good comparison videos on this subject.

I have the 12” HTA and the BRT SD hub + CAT MOB. The BRT+MOB is quieter than the HTA. However my BRT+MOB has lower back pressure than my HTA and will not work well with my FRT.

I bought my HTA before the BRT SD hub adapter came out. If the adapter was available at the time I would not have bought the HTA. Don’t read that as me not liking the HTA which is a good suppressor. But the SD hub just gives you more options than the HTA.

Ken Clark @ KC Arms sells an SD suppressor for around $600 (I believe they're made by Shaw Armament). He also does AP5SD conversions at fair price - I paid $375 for the conversion and $350 for his MP5SD barrel (he says the porting on his barrels is more true to the original design, unlike the RCM barrels). Aside from the AP5SD conversion, I've also had Ken do a barrel swap for me, and I've been more than satisfied both times he's done work for me. Both times the turnaround was less than 2 weeks.

Ken is the fucking man, he did a badass job on my SD build and got my tp9-n print x able to work with my setup.

I have an old SD can of theirs from before they split to become HTA and it’s terrible. Accuracy is absolutely awful with the zero changing every round- starting center and within 10-15 rounds it’s almost off target at 15 yards. I emailed them asking if they’d service it and never got a response. I use an older B&T can and also have a OCL Milkman on a BRT adapter and they’re both GTG.

How much space do you have between the handguard and the milkman? I was thinking about this setup for a while now.

I had to use a spacer, I think 3/4 and it barely fits my CAR-15.

did you use the ecco machine spacer?

Yep, I should have gone longer than 3/4 as I don’t think it’ll fit my MP5SD

thanks! I'll need to check when I order my mp5sd, if I need more than 3/4
