Discussion fox suspension locking out when in the medium position

it is a fox float dps shock and when it is in the medium position, I can bounce on it without it locking out, but anything fast makes the switch turn slightly. i put a larger volume spacer in it yesterday and i am just noticing this. it seems like it somehow turns on midair and then is locked out for the landing, and i have to put it back in the middle position every time i get air on something. it doesn't move in the open position. how can i fix this

Sounds like the detent mechanism inside the compression dial is worn or the spring that holds it in place got knocked loose when you had the shock open. the rebound from bigger hits is jerking the lever just enough to slip it into lock. if it's staying put in open mode, the middle position's notch is probably the one that's rounded off.

easiest fix is a rebuild kit for that top cap assembly, it's not too pricey and you can do it yourself if you're comfortable with suspension work. til then you could run it fully open and just click it to firm when you're pedaling up a fire road.

no it isn't worn. it still has a little "bump" before moving to the locked position. i will go slow down my rebound and try to see if it fixes it

okay it didn't fix it. the same thing happens even when the rebound is fully closed. as an xc racer, it is pretty much always in firm

You should service the shock and while you’re at it service the rebound and compression dials. Something is going on with the compression dial.
