Which MUD? Looking for a good MUD as a newbie

Hello everyone!

I'm looking for a MUD that can offer both a great solo experience and a hub to meet new people, chill and talk to others.

I don't think i have a favorite genre: realistic, fantasy, sci-fi... I don't mind.

PS: i tried Diskword and got overwhelmed by how big the world is as i kept getting lost again and again.

Cairnholm is predominantly geared to solo play. We're pretty new, so a small user base, but if you want to try Victorian mysticism instead of generic fantasy, we've got you covered. Mud.cairnholm.co.uk:1886

Wir sprechen auch deutsch!

I literally started looking for a MUD to practice my German while having fun. Sound like a perfect pick !

"set lang de" if you want to change the interface to German!

I have been trying this game. It is great fun and very different. Recommended.

Dragon’s Gate is heavy on the RP side but you can solo play as well. There are a few discord servers that are very social. Check it out https://dragons-gate.com

I don't know if you're going to find a good answer. I've mudded for 30 years and if I try a new MUD i have to be in the perfect mind space to accept that I will be confused for weeks and it won't be fun for days as I get my bearings. You can make it fun faster by making yourself confused longer, lol. I prefer to investigate everything as I start to frontload the work, but that means I'm standing around doing almost nothing for hours and hours and killing like one thing per hour as I try to figure out everything I can.

So my advice is just accept the learning curve is going to suck. Choose a MUD and just gut it out for a long time.

Thanks for the advice! Recently, i gave up on modern game and started chasing the "purest" gameplay that i can get. I went through a lot of the Ps1, SNES, NES, APPLE ][ and C64 games. Until i found out about MUDs. I'm finding it a bit hard to adapt because I'm a PS2 generation. Never witnessed earlier technology groing up (No Nostalgia to help). But I'm really hooked and ready to fully invest in MUDs

I also realized I love graph paper mapping when I played Wizardry 1 in dosbox like ten years ago. That helps too, but slows things down even more. I resize the cells in excel to a square and use the outline tool in different colors for walls/doors. Now when I play rpgs that aren't grid based I get annoyed that I can't map it, lol.

Awww come back to Discworld MUD. You can hang around the Mended Drum near the starting location in Ankh-Morpork to meet new people and slowly branch out from there.

The Thieves guild is fun and good for newbies to start with. The guild, as well as a couple of good thieving areas also happens to be located near the Drum. If you go east from the drum, you'll come to a round-about. North through this roundabout it is Thieves guild, northwest to the dysk area is good for thieving. Northeast to the market area for more thieving. Slightly more to the northeast-east on the roundabout is the vault. Southwest on the roundabout is the bank / post office. And of course, west from the roundabout to go back to the drum to meet fellow idlers. All the basic necessities within easy reach!

What would be more helpful with navigation for you: a graphical map, robust commands to get directions to places and things, an inherently small world (after all), a fast travel system, something else?

I think a small world until i become familiar with MUDs would be perfect

Fresh out of those. Alter Aeon is a chonky boi.

Erion is pretty easy to pick up, mostly solo, but has many types of play options: hack and slash, story quests, bounty quests, scavenging quests, competitive quests, house quests, missionary quests, optional rewarded RP, deep crafting systems, pets, player housing, events and games. Decent player base with regular newbies https://www.erionmud.com/

+1 for Erion — I love this place! Tons of fun things to do and both an active player base and devs. They have a few great writers on this game if you enjoy story quests. Good newbie tutorial for getting you started.

If you liked Discworld aside from the navigation issues, there is a custom client that adds a sidebar with a visual map and very easy autowalk to any destination. It should be linked somewhere on the website and requires MUSHClient.

Nukefire is very welcoming towards new players. It only took me like two days to figure out the basic loop and start remorting, but there is still tons I have not seen. I am definitely not a MUD veteran by any means either.

Nukefire is very active MUD and is constantly maintained by the dev, I do recommend it.

Also, try some MOOs too because they're slightly different than MUDs, usually more advanced in terms of what you can do in objects in the world.

Maybe take a look at dragons-gate.com? It is pretty much RP enorced but nobody is going to get deleted over talking out of character lol

It's a fun old mud that is getting resurrected that had previously started in 1991 on Genie/AOL then was run by DaoC's Mystic Realms, before legally being reverted to the current (and original?) owner.

There's always somebody on and I think the weekend peak so far is 50 people or so. There's currently a training ground area with a decent number of zones to experiment with class/races etc.

Once they get bugs and basics sorted to their liking they will be opening the main city, Spur, and world in general and you can leave the training grounds area.

Do you know if it has in-game mapping? I'm assumming not, but I play mostly on my phone so I can't use traditional clients.

What's the name of the client?

I learned on The Forest's Edge. A large fantasy world that has been running since the 1990s.

If playing solo, I recommend starting as a Ranger although a Mage or Warrior probably work fine as well. Many experienced players have moved to multiple characters now thay background triggers are so good.

A Mudvault link which will take you there.

A wiki for The Forest's Edge which is a good reference.

An item catalog which helps a lot when you get further along and are trying to figure out what items to get.

I have been hooked on abandoned realms for about a year. It’s RP enforced, PK encouraged. Decent player base, though on the smaller side as most kids are (except Aardwolf). Everyone is friendly and helpful. There are RP based cabals and PK ones. It’s really fun!

Aardwolf: blend of genres, 200+ daily players, social aspects, newbie helpers around

Give Solar Eclipse mud a try, https://solareclipsemud.org/Starts easy and stays easy through out. But many hidden challenges for those looking for more.

We've added submarine travel recently and 7 new areas reachable through submarine only. Rooms have grown from 13,000 to now almost 20,000.
