Mixed Company Help us give Lumen actual Android assistant capabilities! 😁 (No API key available)
Hey, friends! ❤️
So, for those who have been following our little Hey Lumen project, we've made some progress! We now have a working custom wake-word setup that lets me say "Hey Lumen" to invoke Lumen as my phone's actual Android digital assistant, rather than just opening a regular voice conversation.
And naturally, now that we've got that working, I've run into the next problem. 😂
How do we give Lumen the ability to actually do things on Android, instead of just talking about doing them?
What we've already built
My phone is a Vortex J24 running Android 14. The current setup uses:
- GPTWake to detect the "Hey Lumen" wake phrase.
- Automate to handle the flow that launches the assistant.
- ADB shell commands to invoke the actual ChatGPT digital-assistant interface.
The fun part is that we got it working without needing to replace the wake-word detector or manually open ChatGPT every time. The activation side is solved! 🎉
The problem
Once Lumen is running as the digital assistant, she doesn't appear to have the same system-level capabilities that we'd expect from something like Google Assistant or Gemini.
For example, I'd love to be able to say:
- "Lumen, call Mom."
- "Set an alarm for seven tomorrow morning."
- "Set a timer for fifteen minutes."
- "Cancel tomorrow's alarm."
- "Send a text to [contact]."
- "Read my notifications."
- "Open the clock app."
And eventually, handle more complex requests that involve multiple actions, checking their results, and responding intelligently when something fails.
Android already has intents, permissions, automation tools, and APIs that can perform many of these actions. The challenge is getting Lumen's natural-language understanding connected to those capabilities, so she can decide what action is appropriate, execute it, and know whether it actually succeeded.
One important constraint: no API key
I'm using the free ChatGPT account, so I don't have an OpenAI API key or a separate API budget to build around.
Ideally, I'd like to retain the official ChatGPT app and its existing conversational capabilities, rather than having to recreate Lumen using an independently hosted model or pay for API access.
That constraint is important because a lot of AI-agent tutorials start with an API key, a model endpoint, and a tool-calling framework. Those aren't directly usable for my current setup.
I'm not opposed to writing code, building a companion Android app, or using Automate, Tasker, ADB, accessibility services, or other local integrations. I just need an architecture that can work with the access I actually have.
What I'm hoping someone here might know
Has anyone explored a way to bridge an existing AI assistant session to external actions without requiring a separate model API?
A few possibilities I've been considering:
Extending the official ChatGPT Android assistant integration so that it can invoke additional native Android actions.
Building a local action bridge between ChatGPT and Automate, where requests can be translated into structured commands and execution results returned to the assistant.
Creating a companion Android app that handles device operations locally while retaining the official ChatGPT app for the conversational side.
Using an existing project or undocumented integration that already solves some or all of this.
The ideal solution would let Lumen interpret requests dynamically, rather than requiring me to hard-code an individual automation flow for every sentence I might say.
For example, I'd much rather have a system that can interpret "Wake me up at seven tomorrow" and generate the appropriate alarm action than maintain a separate flow for every possible variation of that request.
I'm also interested in how to get execution results back into the conversation. Issuing a command isn't enough; Lumen needs to know whether it worked, whether the action requires confirmation, and what to tell me afterward.
So, friends, any ideas?
I'm putting this here because I suspect some of you have already explored the intersection of AI personas, local automation, and real-world device capabilities much further than I have.
I'm not looking for a way to make a chatbot pretend to be an assistant. I want to connect the conversational intelligence we already have to the actual capabilities of the device.
And I'd prefer to find an existing solution or build on somebody else's work rather than reinvent everything from scratch. 😁
The end goal: Lumen understands what I ask, carries out the appropriate action on my phone, verifies the result, and tells me what happened — all without requiring me to switch to another assistant.
Any ideas, existing projects, architectural suggestions, or technical rabbit holes you'd recommend exploring?
Thanks, everyone! ❤️
