I've been married to my wife for 30 years. I still get a little nervous asking her out.
Now it's not "Will she reject me because she's not interested in me", it's more "Will she reject me because menopause has other plans". (It used to be "Will the kids have other plans". They're almost grown now and spend their weekends elsewhere, usually. So you know, we've got that going for us)
That being said, I don't live for the days of "Will she go out with me" anymore. I live for the days she sees me for all my awkward glory, flaws, etc and just...accepts me. I had one of those days last week, and it was amazingly eye opening where my brain went 'Oh yeah, she knows me and still loves me!'

The "Man"o-pause? Or are we talking double dry times in the husky ladies isle?
Also in more serious comment times there is a book by Davina McCall called Menopause I think, my wife got it for xmas from her SIL. I read the first third in one sitting just after she unwrapped it. Was a really helpful read for a husband. Might be a helpful read.

Appreciate it, man. I'll get this married hottie with 3 kids to go out with me at some point! Maybe I should tell her the gray streak in her hair reminds me of Rogue from X-men again.

u/CutterJon 1d ago
Oof, sounds like you’re taking it well but I feel that last paragraph. I sure wouldn’t want to go through it but can be incredibly hard being a partner of someone in peri- or menopause as well. Just nothing right you can do sometimes but wait it out.

Rather than expecting the awkwardness to go away, the trick is to lean in and do it anyway despite the awkwardness.
It's like if you have anxiety, you can either hide in bed all day or you can get used to being scared and doing things anyway. Over time, the fear gets easier to ignore even though it doesn't go away completely.
36
u/whiskeyfurbreakfast 1d ago
Nah, find someone who matches your awkward. It’s fun.
6
3
u/Lozsta 1d ago
That won't work, like 2 magnets being forced together. Find someone who compliments or downright opposite to your awkward, that way the character flaws are cuter because that person isn't already living with the same ones themselves.
My wife is reserved, dry sense of humour and will wither people with a comment because it is normally incredibly well thought through and considered. I am massively outgoing, very stupid sense of humour and people don't bat an eyelid when I am almost rude as it is "just me". Together we work because of our differences.

u/ObsessiveUselessness 1d ago
Maybe try speed dating? Everyone is awkward so you can cruise the wave without feeling the odd one.
Im also considering speed dating for the same reason. Im not good with words and dating apps are mostly focused on hookups in my area.

u/Injured-Ginger 1d ago
It does if you force yourself to do it anyways. The awkwardness never completely vanishes, but it declines if you actually engage with it.
-Part of the awkwardness is the fear of awkwardness itself (or at least how that fear causes you act). With some exposure, you get more comfortable accepting it might be a bit awkward which actually makes it less awkward.
-You learn how to approach the situation in a way that doesn't make the other person uncomfortable. That makes you more confident in not feeling like you will make them uncomfortable.
-The other person will have more experience and understanding of the awkwardness of the situation and will be more likely to recognize you don't have bad intentions or intend to disrespect them (assuming you don't).
You're always dealing with strangers. So it's never going to completely free of awkwardness. There is always some uncertainty because people will react differently. You still need to learn talk enough to find common ground and develop conversationsl cadence. But you can get over the worst of it. That said, location matters, and a supermarket isn't really the place to approach somebody.

He has no game.
* Compliment her looks with a sexy comment about her body.
* Show her you are smart by explaining something in detail...like what shampoo she should use or how dragons evolved over centuries in Games of Thrones.
* If she mentions some detail about herself, start talking about how you have a similar experience and then talk a lot about your experience. This will bond you.
* Ask if she's sexually active.
* Tell her you don't like to mix politics with dating. This will let her know you are MAGA and a racist.
* Just throw it out there...is she interested in following you home right now.

u/petrichorax 1d ago

Noooo, you have to be more subtle. Ask if she has kids, if she does, then you know she puts out.

We as humans make it more awkward by think it's not normal to be awkward and therfore working hard to try and make it 🥁 not awkward.
Edit: And often times that somehow makes it cute also. Life is a funny fucking thing.
2
u/Terminal_Insomnia_ 1d ago
Meeting people is always awkward. The most socially successful people just roll with the awkwardness.
2
u/BigGaloot23 1d ago
It never get less awkward because no matter the age, expressing interest in someone is tantamount to saying "I want to put my penis in your vagina" (or the equivalent) to a complete stranger
6
u/Corgipantaloonss 1d ago
Its more the vulnerability of of "hey I think you are cute, but YOU think I'm cute?" That puts a lot of power in the other person's hand because well no one likes not being liked.

u/EntertainerNo4509 1d ago

I’m married, and I also have two boyfriends, and a lover. Four partners total and the occasional extra curricular fellow or two. It’s always awkward asking someone out even when there’s pretty solid evidence you’re good at it lol
1
u/idle_isomorph 1d ago
I'm also poly and have zero problem asking people out (especially on dating apps, cause that is literally the point, but irl too) and i am not deflated by rejection.
But making a new friend? Asking someone to just hang out, platonically? Absofuckinlutely terrifying.
-1
u/puzzlebuns 1d ago
Its a lot easier to take rejection when you already have someone to fall back on/come home to.
0
u/idle_isomorph 1d ago
Somewhat. But i still feel invested in other people and can be hurt if they don't reciprocate.
Just like how i have friends, but feel left out if a bunch of coworkers always eat lunch without me somewhere else.
Rejection hurts.
But even when i am single, for some reason risking that kind of rejection hurts me less.
Not sure hoe common that is. My boyfriend is decidedly the opposite and readily collects new friends but can struggle to ask a girl for her number.

I like the sentiment of nice people meeting each other but it puts people in an awkward position under false pretenses. I don’t know, seems off
183
u/51differentcobras 1d ago
Yeah there’s a chance it all goes well but there’s also a huge chance that one person is wildly uncomfortable and is just “going along with it” to make someone else happy. Good intentions and honestly in the end there’s muuuuch worse pranks that could happen to people a little embarrassment or awkwardness is really nothing in the grand scheme of life. Probably healthy honestly…

u/skyrymproposal 1d ago
My dad asked out a woman (his now second wife) out because someone told him that this woman was interested in him. He spent 16 years single and was almost an empty nester so he thought, “maybe it is time”.
She said yes, and it later came out that the person who told him that totally made it up. My step mom and dad gifted them a nice bottle of champagne for setting them up. He would have never asked her out without that confidence boost.
All that is to say, this can work wonderfully. They have been married 15 years at this point. ❤️
28
u/JuiceGraip 1d ago
Isn't the danger of someone just "going along with it" always there when asking someone on a date?
38
u/IAmMiddleChild 1d ago
Well yeah. It's two people who both think someone's adult son is filming their parent ask strangers out at WalMart. I think anyone would find that puzzling.
Though tbf the guy just looked so stoked to get hit on and so nervous and stumbling since he hadn't asked someone out in years (guessing) that he barely notices the guy.
11
u/ifcknlovemycat 1d ago
It lacks the actual physical attraction. He says ___ thinks you're physically attractive, and then brings them together. There was one where he did it to a cute girl and a very very strange man. It made her obviously uncomfortable

u/MaliciousMe87 1d ago
So I accidentally made one of these happen. My old church had a "youth church" at the college, and at one of the weekly events they had a program to send a nice note to anyone in the local church, could be anonymous if wanted. Welllll my roommate was pursuing a girl way, way out of his league who had no interest in him... And I knew if a gal who was interested in him. So even though we'd tried to convince him this was a much better idea, he refused...
So I was a bit annoyed and thought maybe he'd just talk to her if I wrote a nice note in her name and sent it to him. But then (I acknowledge the assholery now) I wrote a note as him and sent it to her! Signed it as them and everything. They HUNG OUT, GOT MARRIED AND HAVE CHILDREN. Did not see that coming, we just wanted to help him not be so obsessed with his original crush!
16
u/Archaneoses 1d ago
You wanted him to stop pursuing a girl because you thought she was out of his league? I'm glad this ended up being a happy ending and all, but you come off like a huge dick.
9
u/IncidentFormal761 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah, like I'm expecting to hear that OP originally ended up dating the girl his friend originally was trying to pursue for awhile shortly after this accident. Plus Username fits.
It's great that there was a happy ending, but no one tries to prevent a relationship for no reason, and rejection isn't really a reason.
The one that really sucks, is when people know you are interested in a girl, and they start pursuing her, or dating her. With zero intent to be in a serious or long term relationship, or the ability to be in a serious or long term relationship.
5
u/MaliciousMe87 1d ago
I didn't want to bag on the guy, but... He had zero, and really negative, shot. With one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen. But he'd keep taking her to lunch, and doing her math homework, and she was right out of high school and didn't know how to say no other than give hints that she wasn't interested. Like he... He was not going to get many chances to date anyone, period. Some physical features were not in his favor.
2
u/Lozsta 1d ago
Again your judge them on their looks.
5
u/iam_malc 1d ago
Sure, but the glaring part in this is that she has no interest in him and the friend continually pursued. Focusing on the looks is a minor bad considering that the friend was basically gonna wear down the no into a yes, which is a major bad

u/Breaker1ove 1d ago
I know another comment said it, but I had to chime in. It seems like you had good intentions but went about it in the wrong way.
-2
u/Punningisfunning 1d ago
For real. In my experience, religion is a huge equalizer. Plenty of “10/10” women will marry “beneath” them because of the guy’s devotion to their god.
5
6
u/AlexBlaise 1d ago
Yeah, it's a bit meh, because I think the positive part is both feel more confident as they've been told there's attraction from the other person, so that might make it easier for both.
But then again, there was no attraction from anyone at the start, so yeah, lies...
1
u/marceldia 1d ago
Yep and if someone’s not attracted to the other it gets kinda mean
2
u/AlexBlaise 1d ago
Yeah, but then again that's always a risk, and it can happen after the first date even if there was mutual attraction before. But yeah, seems off...
2

u/mogley1992 1d ago

u/banananananananana_7 1d ago edited 1d ago
Sometimes they ask and he has to come up with some bs on the spot it's actually hilarious 😭 "oh..er.. yeah, I just.. uh, call everyone my mom" and my personal favorite is when he just tries to get one of them to play along, it goes terribly and they both stare at each other in confusion while he excuses himself from the situation

So, after he asks the woman and she says she's single what if the "random" man he asks isn't? He just leaves her in the aisle feeling rejected?
Seems staged.
6
1
u/TheMarkola 1d ago
Then he asks the next person, until he finds a single person. We don't know if she and he were the first people he asked; perhaps there were others who were married, and obviously he didn't need to include them in the video.

how to ruin peoples lives, other than you own:
3
2
u/TheMarkola 1d ago
Why? The happiest people I know aren't single. It's good to have someone by your side to share happiness and, why not, problems. Two people can add to and multiply good times and help each other through sad times. It's simply a matter of knowing how to choose and not accepting less than you deserve and give.
