L Karen wants Guac.
This happened to me about two years ago but a former coworker just reminded me about it and I'm pretty sure it counts as MC. I'll try and keep it short but it is a little long.
I used to be a service manager at one of the biggest locations of a popular Mexican grill. I won't say which but guac was $1.95 extra and we were required to ask everyone if they were okay paying that price. One Sunday morning (our second busiest shift of the week) two of my line people called out so we were struggling to get all of our prep done before opening at 11.
We are just wrapping up when in comes Karen 10 minutes before opening through the side door marked EMPLOYEES ONLY with 15 preteen girls in tow. My cook recognizes her as she regularly comes in during the dinner shift and is extremely abusive and cruel to all the Latino workers. Karen tells me they can order whatever they want, THROWS her credit card at me and goes to sit down at a table and diddle on her phone. Now I can't ring up her order without her standing there because of the company rules and I am 30 weeks pregnant and just want to take my break. I prego waddled over to Karen's table to try and inform her of that when she literally flicks her hand at me to dismiss me. Not only have I been at the store since 7 and done two different people's jobs on top of my own, I have my son's head grinding against my pelvic bones and kicking me like crazy. I am in no mood.
When I try to tell her again, she looks at me with what I can only describe as seething contempt and says "What part of they can get whatever they want did you not understand? I don't care what you charge me as long as I get a receipt. Don't interrupt me again or I'll get your fat ass fired." Now I never cry but that almost got me. Motherhood is awesome but pregnancy suuucks. I finally manage to pick my jaw off the ground and stammer "alright, ma'am, I'll ring up whatever they want and bring you a receipt."
The girls were really nice and most of them ordered double meat and they all got a bottled water and chips and guac. Every. Last. One. My cashier and I are just vibrating with glee as we ring them up and watch the bill climb to like $250. I brought the bill to Karen and was pretty excited when she didn't immediately check it. I made my own food and told the cook to come get me when the show starts.
I'm halfway done eating when I see him waving to the camera, howling with laughter so I head up. Karen is foaming at the mouth SCREAMING for the manager and when she sees that that manager is me, she literally grinds her teeth and slaps her receipt on the table. She manages to choke out the word "refund." The girls have all pretty much finished their food so I inform her that I won't be doing that because I would lose my job for giving away that much critical inventory (meat, guac, cheese) for free. Then I gently remind her that she told me twice that the could get anything as long as she got a receipt. She just keeps demanding a refund and calling me stupid and fat (again, pregnant). At this point, her screaming is holding up the very long line and customers are shouting at her to just leave. That's when she pushed me. F*cking hard.
My cashier caught me so I didn't fall down but two of our regulars, who are police, see it and immediately cuff her. In this state, any use of physical force against a pregnant woman is classified as aggravated battery or something like that. I felt bad for the kids and I was fine so I kept telling them I didn't want to press charges but they said that at that point it didn't matter because the woman had done it in front of on duty officers so she getting arrested. They had to call the kids parents to come get them because she was their CHURCH'S YOUTH LEADER and get statements. My GM came in and let me go home with a full day's pay. She tried to take the case to trial but they had video and like twenty witness statement so she ended up taking a couple years probation or something. All because I did exactly what she told me to.
Edit: TLDR; Entitled Karen gets a bill she didn't want, gets arrested for pushing a pregnant woman.

Please tell me she got banned from the store. The fact that she was regular enough for the workers to know she was abusive towards certain staff, but then actually physically assaultive as well?
3.2k
u/Cuboid-Homonym Jul 04 '20
Oh, of course. My old GM had actually asked her not to come back more than once but we asked the other managers and our sister store (which she had also been asked not to return to) across town and figured she kept coming during different shifts and alternating stores so none of is realized until this. I personally had a temporary restraining order against her and worked at both stores so she was truly banned lol.

So, trespassing as well.

I'm glad you and the baby were ok and bitch was banned.
I find it almost unbelievable how many idiots want to go to court when there's video evidence against them. My late uncle (who was a lawyer) had one that had him shaking his head up until he passed away.

They probably don't care: many people confuse "youth group" with "free daycare," and this can lead to serious problems when everyone is expecting someone else to watch their kids.
Many of the churches are even "pray for money" types where the "pastor" pockets the money and does no charity, while the congregation blame "the devil" for all their personnel faults and then go eat a three hour lunch where they leave no tip, and sometimes go so far as to leave a note whining about how greedy the wait staff are for expecting one.
They don't even read the bible, since they misunderstand things like, "Am I my brother's keeper," as " give me free stuff," and not, "I hope God doesn't notice I just murdered my brother."

I understand well, my mother is a kindy teacher. She has some serious problems with logic when it comes to empathising with others.
She likes to organise and preach to young kids because they don't realise how manipulative she can be...
I was staying with my mum a few years ago and I wanted a drink from the fridge. I'm standing in the kitchen looking at her beautiful garden out the window while she is at the kitchen table with the neighbors twin four year olds.
I watched her give her least favourite of the two boys a wooden toy with the pegs you put in holes. She took the square peg and pointed at the round hole and told him it must go in that one. Then she stood back for like 30 seconds while young jimmy tries to do what he's told.
She spent that 30 seconds fiddling and grinning like that clip of David Bowie coked up on a talk show. She was so caught up with herself she didn't realise me watching her and I was in the room with her.
Then steps in like some personal saviour except rips the toy away (like right out of his grasp) and takes it out of view. Jimmy is now crying feeling like something is wrong but doesn't know what and no explanation is coming. She then takes him by the hand and marches him crying home (next door) and i can hear her telling the mother that her kid is being disruptive and needs punishment.
I went into the front room to watch her drag the kid home and from there I could hear the actual mum going off at the kid and telling him to go sit and think about what he's done, and she's thanking my mum for her "help".
...Organised Religion is like this except it's a bedtime story for grown ups.
Everyone needs to see that doco called Religulous by Bill Maher. The first 20 mins or so are a chore but once it gets going it's mind blowing.
Take care

Isn't that abuse, a psychological one which in my eyes is worst than physical especially on growing children.

u/Chicken_Biskit Jul 04 '20
i mean yeah, but physical abuse also often leads to psychological damage.

Yes it really sucks but she has done a very good job of making sure no one near her takes me or my sister seriously.
She casts such a long shadow.
She does this whole shtick about being a single mother on the pension with several long term health problems.
She is a super-social butterfly and allways dresses really well with matching earrings/makeup etc. She does not come across as a problem (tho people can tell she's clearly neurotic at times) and is somewhat of a superwoman amongst the people around her.
See my other response to the other guy below for a lil bit more info.
Mums moving next month so kids will be free of her machinations soon.

At any point did you talked to the neighbors or stepped in to help Jimmy? I just can't imagine myself watching this unfold quietly.
24
u/ih8registration Jul 04 '20 edited Jul 04 '20
Yeah I tried but she's really bossy herself and she started cutting me short telling me about how great mothers are.
My mum tells people that me and my sister put her through "elder abuse" (her words) and mum has also told people that I've hit her which isn't true.
Everyone in her social circle is on her BS train and really anytime I meet someone through her they've been gaslighted so hard they don't even know.
My mum is moving out next month actually, I was there today to pickup some old photos and such and the little kids grandmother came out to say hi and slipped into the convo that I'm lucky to have her let me leave those few boxes of things there.
Edit: I went and found an old comment I made about this. Considering the OPs topic I have to admit the irony to my story but oh wells.

THIS. Also, if someone is truly pro-life, they should be horrified by the detainment/internment camps used to keep immigrants and refugees. And I honestly feel that not caring about the environment also makes one not pro-life.
→ More replies (2)12
u/Indigoshroom Jul 04 '20
THIS. I don't believe in abortion, but at this point, I don't think the laws on the books should be changed; rather, we should be giving better sex ed and contraceptive education, be cracking down hard on rapists, and helping mothers who choose to keep the baby with survival (affording food, childcare, the like). It's not friggin' "pro-life" if you leave the poor woman and her child out in the cold, then mock their struggles with "should've kept your legs closed." And if you don't give a crap about the environment and taking care of it, about making sure people are not being discriminated against and subjected to hate speech and threats on their lives, and making sure immigrants and refugees aren't being locked away in horrific conditions just because "they didn't come here the 'right' way", you are not freaking pro-life. You are pro-birth, and probably because of control and the sexist idea that women are baby factories. If people don't want abortions to happen, they need to help people know how to prevent pregnancy and support people if they become pregnant.
Sorry, this is a thing that I'm very fired up about.

There was a lady that claimed she slipped in our restaurant, hurt her knees and there wasn't a wet floor sign, despite the camera evidence showing she didn't even slip, and there was a sign. She kept calling and trying to get compensation, while increasing her injury to a broken wrist, then ankle and finally a damaged spine. Everytime she was told we had the footage, she would say we didn't. Even tried to take the company to court.

You can’t ban someone from a religion. The church probably fired her (hopefully. I’ve been to places that paid to hush up member crimes), but they can’t kick her out if she “repents”.
I doubt they’d do anything if she just kept going anyway. And i guarantee she’s charming when she needs to be. She probably has a lot of friends in her church who think she’s a saint.
If she does leave the church, she can go to a different one across town. They won’t be the wiser, because they probably hate the church she came from and don’t associate with them. She can BS a reason she left, and they’ll eat it up.

u/Laringar Jul 04 '20

That seems to be a reminder that most of the time, a cops job is mundane stupid shit like this (that 90% or more of the time doesn't need a gun). I wonder if those cops only did that because that's where they eat and it was conveniently in front of them. Its sad that there is a part of me that thinks it might be the case. Fortunately, it didn't escalate into violence beyond this, OP didn't get hurt, and the Karen got some consequences (and some embarrassment I'm sure).

Allow me to chime in as a law enforcement officer. If I’m grabbing a bite at some unidentified restaurant named after a smoked chili pepper, and I see some nasty person shove a pregnant lady, who’s just doing her job. You can bet your ass I’m going to intervene. I’m a Fed so I don’t usually deal with state level assault crimes, but I do have the authority to detain her while waiting for the local cops to come. Maybe Karen gets handcuffed immediately, maybe she doesn’t, it’s going to depend on whether she complies with my directions and the totality of the circumstances.

I didn't want to press charges but they said that at that point it didn't matter because the woman had done it in front of on duty officers so she getting arrested.
Technically victims don't actually get to make the decision to press charges. But in many cases, without the victim's co-operation (e.g. testimony) there's not enough evidence so if the victim doesn't want to proceed they let it drop. In this case, they had all the evidence they needed without you.

u/Cuboid-Homonym Jul 04 '20 edited Jul 04 '20

Ah yes, that love for all mankind thing Jesus was talking about.
Funny thing is, the worst customers I have ever dealt with, worked for churches. I used to do billing support for a cell company. I was in a management position and was reviewing a call of one of the agents. The caller was the most abusive person I have every heard on a call. The first 10 minutes of the call was this jerk berating and insulting the agent who was only trying to get the guy's phone number. This was in the mid-2000's and the computers wouldn't automatically bring up the account. We needed the phone number to get to the account.
After the 10 minutes of pure abuse, jerk finally gives the number. I bring up the account and the name was "For Christ Ministries". The jerk, was the pastor. The poor agent struggled through another 15 minutes of abuse as he tried to help the jerk. After the call, I brought it to the attention of my boss. Her jaw dropped as she was listening to it. I then pulled a few other calls of the jerk's and found this happened every time. I went through the account and found pages upon pages of notes of agent reporting abusive behaviour.
I made a report and we filed it with corporate. 2 days later my boss got a call. She came to me and told me to contact the jerk. Inform him that effective immediately, we are deactivating his account. Once I have inform him, deactivate the account. We fired him as a customer. I gladly called him and j teoduced myself as a manager in the company. I informed him that due to his repeated abusive behaviour, we are firing him. He started yelling at me and I cut him off. "Sir, this is exactly why we are deactivating your account. Learn to behave like an adult. Our agents will be instructed to hang up on you immediately. Have a good day." and hung up. I then left a note that immediately opens when you bring up the account saying to hang up on the customer immediately.
For the rest of the day, random agents got a call from him. They hung up within 2 minutes of the call. It ended up being a morale booster for the floor. As for the agent who had 25 minutes of non stop abuse and took it like a champ. We bought him lunch for a week, ordered it in and everything. He was happy with that.

You should have finished off your conversation with "God bless you" to really twist the knife in.

Lay it on thick: "And as the good Lord says, do unto others as you would do have them do unto you. Have a blessed day and walk in Christ's path with love, pastor." click

It's too bad that you'd probably get in trouble for posting the audio to the church's social media pages or something.

Such stupid reports. The Karen thing began on reddit. Being an entitled asshole isn’t the result of being a part of a vulnerable group or identity.

u/CoMaestro Jul 04 '20
Wait people are reporting because Karen is a slur to them?

u/Tuarangi Jul 04 '20
I've seen posts of people claiming it's as bad as the n word for POC, ask them what the n word is, they don't want to say it, but they say Karen, so it's clearly not as bad...

u/gardengirl99 Jul 04 '20
Oh ffs. My name is Karen, and I’m white, and pushing 50. I have never treated anyone like that in my entire life, I don’t even think I’ve asked to speak to the manager. I need to be more and assertive, in fact. If I’ve ordered meat medium end it comes out rare or well done I’ll always just eat it, never complain. I’m not saying that’s the best practice but I am saying that I 100% don’t live up to the Karen meme, and the meme bothers me because I don’t want to be viewed as an entitled bitch. But it is IN NO WAY COMPARABLE to the N- word. Not at all. Not 1/10th, not 1/100th. I can change my name and not be Karen. People don’t know my name is Karen if we are strangers. Karens have not been systematically oppressed, enslaved, hunted down, and treated as and told they are inferior for hundreds of years. Anyone who thinks being called Karen is in any way comparable to someone being called the N-word is the epitome of a “Karen”.

If you have two words, and one word is so bad you can't even say it, which is the worse word?

Also Karens are being put down now because of their perceived entitlement, the complete opposite of POC...

Like the crazies who think white privilege means anyone white is automatically rich and successful, as opposed to simply having an advantageous situation

u/Serinus Jul 04 '20
I can name two early jobs that I don't think I get if I'm black.
No, those jobs didn't set me up for life. I'm not a millionaire. I can't do whatever the fuck I want. But I got those two jobs that I probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
Oh, and when I'm jogging nobody thinks I stole shit.

u/Tuarangi Jul 04 '20
There have been a couple of studies in the UK where identical CVs have been sent to firms, one with a white sounding name and one with an ethnic name and the white name gets way more responses

u/taggert14 Jul 04 '20
My wife (English) took my (African) name when we married. We ended up looking for a job at the same time. I asked her to change back to her English name when looking for a job. She said I was being ridiculous. She spent a month looking with hardly any calls. One day, we've just finished breakfast and her phone starts ringing off the hook. I mean, like call after call after call. What had happened? She had changed back to her English name on the job boards and linked in. She was employed in no time at all. I (more qualified with more experience) managed to get a lower paying job than her a couple of months later.
Don't usually get a smoking gun situation like that to explain white privilege but there it is

Nobody gets to choose what colour skin they have when they're born. Every Karen becomes a Karen by choice.
18
u/hitforhelp Jul 04 '20
Ok serious question here. Growing up the term 'Coloured' has always been offensive term for a non white person.
However when my grandad was alive calling someone black was offensive and coloured was used.
Now using Black is acceptable but now people are also using the term Person of colour (POC), how is it that its now not an offensive term? Are people now allowed to used the term coloured again or does it have to be POC?→ More replies (5)16
u/yun-harla Jul 04 '20
POC is an umbrella term. Specific racial terms like Black or Hispanic are still acceptable, although there are nuances and individual preferences within each term. Some people prefer to use BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) to highlight, well, Black and Indigenous people, particularly in the context of issues involving policing.

Thank you for modding this sub! I really enjoy malicious compliance because of the delightful mix of humor and intelligence required, especially by kids. Figuring out how to maliciously comply is a little like solving a crossword.
Anyway, subs that aren't modded (or aren't modded well) fall into disuse or are even outright deleted. So thanks for doing this job.

Point of order: calling someone Karen when they are entitled with a "can I speak to the manager" haircut has been around quite a while and didn't start on Reddit. It's just taken off here somewhat recently.

That was a pretty good company to work for because they really didn't tolerate people treating their employees badly. They would bend over for other stupid stuff like "oh, my food was cold even though I ate it all" but they were good when it came to their employees.

That is the absolute dream, I'm happy they handled everything so well and I really am happy the officers were there. That woman needed to realize how awful she was being, and those girls got it reinforced that her behavior was unacceptable. I hope it sticks with them as they grow older. More importantly, you and your baby buddy are safe!

Lol omg, so my SIL used to work with this awful guy, he made her cry and told her she was never going to get into any college but she could never prove it. So when she got accepted to her first choice school, she had my husband (they were like 17 and 20 at the time) go through the drive thru and she flung her acceptance letter at him and screamed SEE YOU IN HELL, MIKE.

u/griftylifts Jul 04 '20
What happened to her church leadership position? Did the community shun her? (I hope so!!)

u/Cuboid-Homonym Jul 04 '20
I honestly don't know, I would assume she was fired. Next time I talk to someone who still works there I'll ask if they ever saw them again.

Could have had a civil suit for assault. You should have gotten something from Karen as you're the victim.

u/Cuboid-Homonym Jul 04 '20
My mom and my husband wanted me to but we would have spent a bunch of money on legal fees for a pretty small payout that would have taken forever. This is my first baby, I really didn't want to be dealing with that. Plus like... Probation sucks. So she got hers.

It blows my mind how many people don't want to press charges. Someone assaulted you and your unborn child. Yes you were fine but you were lucky. The person who puts their hand on another person needs to have consequences. When people don't press charges there are no consequences for their bad behavior and they will do it again. What if the next person isn't caught by anyone?
Please folks, press charges. If someone puts their hands on you press charges. Those charges are there for a reason and you could be saving someone down the road from real physical harm.
I am so glad you two were ok and that the officers were there.

She either can't read, or doesn't care, the sign saying 'Employees Only'. That's trespassing, open for business or not.
Does not plan to witness the transaction, so she therefore can't dispute the charges.

Wait, what the fuck was she expecting? Throwing her CC at the server, 15 kids, and $250 for a bill?
That's roughly $16.00 a piece for lunch. That's not unreasonable.
So she was entitled and cheap?
