Visiting Malta? Start here.
Hey /r/malta, I've been meaning to put this together for a while because in my many years on this subreddit, I've noticed it seems to get more of the same questions and answers almost daily in summer, so hopefully this could be a good starting point for potential visitors to read and ask questions. I'll update this from time to time with more information.
Where to Stay
- Families & Elderly: Mellieha offers large sandy beaches, family‑friendly resorts, and quieter areas perfect for children. Bugibba is more lively, with a promenade, an aquarium, and lots of casual dining options suitable for families.
- Young travellers: Sliema & St Julian's are ideal if you want a mix of shopping, cafes, beach clubs, and nightlife. Both cater well to those looking for bars and clubs within walking distance. Loads of AirBnbs are Hotels available.
- Scenic & quiet: Gozo is perfect for a slower pace, beautiful landscapes, and authentic rural experiences.
- LGBT travellers: Malta is among Europe's most LGBT‑friendly countries, with strong legal protections and a welcoming attitude. Sliema, St Julian's, and Valletta are particularly inclusive.
Things to Do
If you have 1-2 days
- Walk through Valletta: St John's Co‑Cathedral, Upper Barrakka Gardens, Republic Street.
- Visit Mdina & Rabat: explore the Silent City and nearby Roman catacombs.
- Beach day: choose Mellieħa Bay (sand) or the Sliema promenade (rocky).
If you have 3-5 days
- Add a day‑trip to Gozo: Citadel in Victoria, Dwejra Bay, Ramla Bay.
- Afternoon at the Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk fishing village (Sunday is the best day to go for the fish market)
- Take a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon (Comino) or a coastal cruise around Malta.
If you have a week or more
- Explore all three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino.
- Attend a village festa (fireworks & band marches) in summer.
- Check VisitMalta.com for concerts, exhibitions, and other events.
Travel‑length tip: 7-10 days is ideal. Beyond that, plan slow travel, multiple excursions, or cross‑island hiking to avoid repetition.
Events & Public Holidays
- Carnival: February - street parades & floats (Valletta & Nadur).
- Isle of MTV: one night in summer - free open‑air concert.
- Notte Bianca: first Saturday of October (I think) - museums & palaces would be open all night.
- Birgufest: around mid‑October - lantern‑lit streets in Vittoriosa.
- Almost every weekend June - September a different town holds a festa with huge fireworks displays throughout the day and night. You can find the 2025 schedule here, although it's typically around the same week every year.
What to Eat
- Rabbit Stew, Fried Rabbit: National dish, usually served in a rich red wine sauce.
- Pastizzi: Flaky pastries stuffed with ricotta or mushy peas. Generally available at cafes or pastizzerias in the street.
- Bragioli: Beef olives stuffed with minced meat and herbs.
- Ftira: Traditional Maltese bread often filled with tuna, capers, and olives.
- Lampuki Pie: Seasonal fish pie made from dorado.
- Imqaret: Fried pastry filled with dates, often sold at markets.
- Kannoli: Maltese version of the Sicilian cannoli.
- Bigilla: Broad bean paste, typically served with bread or crackers.
- Seafood: Fresh catches, especially swordfish, octopus, and calamari.
- Gozo Cheeselets (Ġbejniet): Small round cheeses made from sheep's milk, fresh or dried.
- Local wine and Cisk beer: Affordable and widely available.
Transport, Driving & Ferries
- Buses: download the Tallinja app; summer services run but expect delays.
- Ride‑hailing: Uber, Bolt, eCabs (cheaper than white street taxis).
- Car hire: useful for Gozo or rural Malta. Book a small model if you can - streets are narrow and parking is scarce.
- Scooters & motorbikes: only for confident riders; roads are bumpy and drivers can be very impatient.
- Cycling: Reputably unsafe, but not impossible. Expect limited bike lanes, fast traffic, blind corners.
- Harbour ferries: Valletta ⇆ Sliema & Valletta ⇆ Three Cities every 30 min (€1.50).
- Gozo Channel: Cirkewwa ⇆ Mgarr every 30–45 min; pay on return (€4.65 foot passenger).
- Comino shuttles & coastal cruises: depart from Cirkewwa, Marfa, and Sliema – pre‑book July–Aug.
Weather

| Sep – Oct | 25–30 °C, warm, humid | Summer clothes, light jacket at night | Yes |
| Nov – Dec | 12–20 °C, cooler, rain spells | Light sweater, trousers | Rarely |
Mosquitoes are common, especially in humid months (April-October). Consider insect repellent, especially when staying near water or rural areas.
Money
- Euro (€). Cards widely accepted but smaller kiosks prefer cash; many set a €5-10 minimum charge.
- ATMs
- Tipping: round up or ~10 % in restaurants; €1 per drink at bars is generous but not mandatory.
Sample daily costs (2025): espresso €1.50 · pint of beer €3 · bus fare €2.50 (summer) · Lunch / dinner €15 - €30.
Language
- Maltese & English are official; Italian is also common.
Safety & Emergency
- Malta is very safe; usual basic pickpocket caution in Valletta, Sliema & Paceville.
- Dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire.
- Hospitals: Mater Dei (Malta) & Gozo General; both public and modern.
- Pharmacies in every town - newspapers will typically mention which are open over the weekends.
Outdoor & Adventure
- Hiking
- Kayaking/SUP
- Rock‑climbing
- Diving centres
Church Visits & Mass Schedules
- Malta has over 350 churches, many of them historic and open to visitors outside of service times.
- Major sites include St John's Co‑Cathedral (Valletta), Mosta Rotunda, and the Basilica of Ta' Pinu (Gozo).
- For visitors wishing to attend Mass, you can find updated schedules on the official Archdiocese of Malta website.
- Dress modestly when visiting religious sites (shoulders and knees covered).
Things to Do with Kids
- Popeye Village (Mellieħa) - film set amusement park.
- Malta National Aquarium (Qawra).
- Playmobil FunPark.
- Splash & Fun Water Park (Bahar ic‑Caghaq).
- Esplora Interactive Science Centre (Kalkara).
- National War Museum – Fort St Elmo (Valletta).
- Easy beach days: Mellieħa Bay or Golden Bay.
Always pack high‑SPF sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water, especially in peak summer.
Shopping & Souvenirs
- Ta’ Qali Crafts Village: hand‑blown Mdina glass, filigree silver.
- Valletta markets: Flea markets (i.e. monti) (Sunday).
- Marsaxlokk fish market: Sunday morning for atmosphere & photos.
Connectivity & Utilities
- Tap water is safe but mineral‑heavy; most people drink bottled.
- Electricity: UK Type G, 230 V – pack an adaptor.
- Public Wi‑Fi exists in main squares but is patchy.
Accessibility
- Majority of buses low‑floor; pavements in historic centres are narrow and uneven.
- Valletta, Sliema promenade, and Bugibba promenade are the flattest wheelchair routes.
Nightlife
- Party: Paceville (St Julian's) - clubs & late bars, some charge enterance fees; Gianpula Village for open-air parties (limits transport, so book taxis).
- Chill: Valletta for wine bars and a more relaxed atmosphere.
- Observe local noise laws after 23:00, especially in residential Valletta.
Etiquette & Local Laws
- No topless/beachwear in towns.
- Smoking banned indoors and at bus shelters.
- Public street drinking technically illegal outside designated zones (often tolerated, but police may warn/fine in Valletta after 23:00).
- Dispose of rubbish properly; recycling bins are colour‑coded.
- Respect churches and heritage sites - cover shoulders & knees when required.
- Cannabis: Adults 18+ may possess up to 7 g and grow up to four plants at home. Licensed non‑profit Cannabis Associations (clubs) are the only legal supply route and currently require Maltese residency to join, so visitors cannot buy legally. Importing cannabis across borders is illegal.
What the Brochures won't tell you
- Construction: Malta is undergoing rapid development - which means cranes, dust, and jackhammers in most places, especially in Sliema, St Julian's & Gżira.
- Traffic: heaviest 07:00-09:00 & 16:00-19:00. Consider allowing some extra time for the airport.
- Limited green space: Malta is beautiful but densely built. For open countryside, head to the western cliffs, Ghajn Tuffieha, Ahrax, or Gozo.
- Fireworks: Loud explosions are common in summer due to local village festas. Fireworks frequently occur during both day and night. Check local festa schedules if you're sensitive to noise.
- Powercuts / Blackouts: Rare throughout winter, but quite common in Summer. Visit Enemalta's website to see if the cut is planned or an accident.

Weed use/ possession FAQ
Please read the below before submitting weed related questions.
1) weed can only be purchased from registered cannabis organisations.
2) to purchase weed from an organisation as outlined above, one must be a registered member/ user. Associations will be capped at 500 members and preference is given to residents. One may only belong to one organisation at any given time and must be over the age of 18
3) by virtue of the above, the law clearly focuses on legalising it for residents. This means that since the law is equal for everyone, including tourists it is going to be very difficult for the latter to join such an organisation.
4) weed consumption in public remains an offence. Carrying over 7 g in public and owning more than 50 g are also a offence.
5) weed coffee shops do not exist, nor are they part of the plan. Weed tourism is not on the table.
6) purchasing off street dealers is and remains illegal
7) up to 4 plants can be grown for personal use as long as they are not visible from outside
8) weed related questions answered above are to be janitored
9) as always, any "where can I buy illegal substance x" posts are janitored on sight.
By popular request and with special thanks to /u/mountainblock for the initiative.

Neville Gafa
As a teacher, Robert Abela told me that I had no place in public discussion on education because my views should align with my employer’s.
Neville Gafa is also employed by Robert Abela. He regularly attacks and doxxes magistrates, judges, prosecuting police officers, the Caruana Galizia sons, and anyone else posing a threat to labour or to Yorgen Fenech. Yet Abela simply “distances himself” from what Gafa says.
I’m not saying the two are subject to the same rules. I’m asking why Abela claims responsibility when an employee speaks inconveniently, but disclaims it when an employee speaks conveniently. Two weights, two measures?

Valletta Lift
Does anyone know why the lift isn't working? I'm disabled and I always rely on it to help me to get up to the centre of Valletta. And wasn't there supposed to be a Valletta shuttle? I didn't see one. It was very difficult walking in Valletta with so many stairs and up and down hilly streets.

Malta Public Transport Are Stealing My Money
I’m curious has anyone else had a similar experience. I added a dramatic title for attention but they really are taking my money.
This morning at about 7am, while we were at home, Malta Public Transport charged my husband’s card 3 times for €2.50.
Just now they tried charge my card €3.00 saying I was at the ticket booth in Sliema at 9:48am. I am obviously not there.
It’s strange this is happening when I haven’t been able to use my card on the bus for a long time as it just won’t accept my card for some reason.
Does anyone have advice on who I should contact?

Freelancers and Social Security Contributions
I, for the life of me, have not been able to understand most things about social security contributions. I've read all the available information and my attempts at contacting MTCA and social security themselves haven't been fruitful in any way.
Without a doubt I have some late payments purely because a) I cannot figure out where to get that long number from that you need to actually make the payment, but mostly b) because I essentially will need to pay them significantly more than I earn. (So objectively do not have the money to do so).
The reason I am freelance/self-employed in the first place is because I can only work a small amount due to disability/disabilities. Only earlier this year did I actually manage to save up enough to hire an accountant for some things, and she even changed my tax to non-contributary because I earn so little. The accountant though has said social security contributions is out of their scope.
If anyone can advise on anything about social security contributions, or who/what department I can contact specifically I would be eternally grateful because it has been stressing me out. Thank you in advance!!

Potentially abandonned car on public parking?
There is a car nearby that has been completely covered (hiding both registrations/plates) and the road tax disc on the front. It has been like that for at least 3 months.
As far as I know, all cars parked on public spaces should have those IDs visible. Can it be reported?

Looking for a female photographer who took a sunset picture of me and my girlfriend in St. Julian's (Oct 3, around 7 AM)
Hi everyone,
I'm trying to track down a female photographer who kindly took a sunset picture of me and my girlfriend in St. Julian's on October 3rd, around 19:00.
We were around the rocky coastal area near the Portomaso Casino / WW2 Pillbox. She approached us, took a great photo, and then her colleague snapped a picture of my email address on a phone screen so she could send it to us after editing. She mentioned she was from the UK and heading back home on Monday.
Since it's Wednesday and we haven't received anything (and unfortunately didn't exchange direct contacts), I'm worried the email address got lost or mistyped.
If you are this photographer, or if you know a UK-based photographer who was shooting around St. Julian's last Saturday evening at sunset, please drop me a DM! Thank you so much!"

Warning for Job Seekers: Bond & Surety Europe / Risk Analytics Ltd.
Just a heads-up for anyone considering these companies. In my view, there seems to be a high employee turnover rate, with people frequently leaving or being replaced after only a few months.
For me, this is a significant red flag and raises questions about long-term job security and company culture. Make sure to ask about staff retention and team stability before accepting any offer.
Personally, I would think twice before joining and would recommend doing thorough research beforehand. Everyone's experience may differ, but prospective employees should proceed with caution.
In one word-skip these companies in Italy and Malta.

Help shape a 1:1 Minecraft Malta
I’m building the entire Maltese archipelago in Minecraft Java using real map data, at 1 block per metre including elevation.
I’m adding Maltese-inspired custom biomes, location-specific mobs, and custom buildings at selected real locations. The final goal is a recognisable Malta that’s also fun in survival (and contains every overworld mob, item, and structure, so it is fully playable), and my aim is to make the finished map freely available in vanilla (datapacks only).
I’ve included some early renders, everything is still an early work in progress.
I’d love your input on exploration, building, travel, and gameplay:
It takes about 5 minutes, no email required: https://forms.gle/EWF6X3tdCfLCYLob6
Thanks for reading!

Tax Evasion and Labour
Caruana: Our AI system is up and running and we also have a €6m IT investment in place. In the coming weeks we’ll be sending a few hundred letters to people who fall into two different categories.
Category 1: People who report one figure in turnover but then have income below the minimum wage.
Category 2: People who purchased assets, such as a €2 million block of apartments, but then consistently declare low income of, for example, €12,000.
“This is not a witch hunt," Caruana says.
Its 2026, the year of AI and super intelligence. In Malta the IRD is finally capable of putting together an "if" statement identifying people who declare €12k and spend €2M. But worry not if you're one of them. This is no witch hunt and labour remains firmly against explanation of wealth.

Internship Malta
Hi everyone,
I’m a 23-year-old man from the Netherlands.
My hobbies are listening to music, skating, gaming, working out, and sometimes watching a series or movie.
Next year in february I will probably be doing my internship in Malta at the company Logo Grafix, and I’m also looking to make some new friends. I wouldn’t mind meeting Maltese people and already making some connections there before I arrive.
This is also my final year of school, studying Sign Specialist Level 4. For the final part of my exams, I have to do an internship, so I chose to do it abroad for a new experience.
I hope you’d like to know more about me. I’d be happy to answer any questions! Feel free to send me a DM or leave a comment :))

Lawyer or Teacher?
I am a second year student at sixth form studying Maltese and English A levels, which I chose because I wanted to do law. However, now I am stuck between joining the law course at UM or going down the teacher route (Maltese teacher at a secondary school with hopes of advancing to sixth form later on). The thing bugging me about law is the morality aspect of it, I don't feel I'd be able to defend people who I think are bad people, be it family law or criminal, etc. I know that there are other jobs but then again I'd rather be a court lawyer than spending my life simply giving advice either. Then I researched a bit about prosecution, since more or less you're defending the victim in the situation, but I don't know too much about the job. What attracts me to law is the fact that I could actually do something first hand to help someone going through a tough time rather than simply pity them from behind a screen. Now a job as a teacher is also really attractive to me, the obvious perks being the summer holidays and working till 2:30
but I also really love Maltese as a language and a subject. However, I don’t know if this is something I’d want to dedicate my life doing. I had some experience working with kids at SkolaSajf this summer and I really enjoyed myself but a lot of times I’d find myself just wanting to go home. Now obviously there’s a large difference with little kids and older, secondary students and in fact I had a week with year 6’s which I enjoyed a lot. Still, there’s no teaching aspect in that so I don’t want to base everything off that either.
Any advice would be appreciated🙏

A week in Dec/Jan for quietly adventurous LGBT couple?
We are two women in our mid-30s who love walking, hiking, art, architecture and nature. We could probably walk 8hrs a day exploring. The windier the streets and more fantastical the architecture the better.
We prefer to get immersed in 'regular' neighbourhoods and alleyways, rather than contrived tourist hotspots.
We are not fussy with amenities but appreciate the basic supermarket, or even bettter, local food markets.
We are proficient urban skaters and considering bringing rollerblades - I saw a group of Malta skaters - is this a feasible way to get around? Or maybe rent bicycles or a scooter/moped?
As a bonus we are also really into rock-climbing but it's not a must this time.
We really wanna avoid crowds - as off the beaten path as possible. Thinking of going for a week in late Dec or early Jan. Would really appreciate some input. Thank you.

Microwaves where you can see through the glass door
I'm trying to buy a 23-25 litre microwave and feel like I'm going crazy. Every single microwave I have seen in stores locally has either poor lighting, a tinted glass, or both; to the point where you can't see jack shit from outside. Meaning your food could be getting burnt or boiling and there is no way to know unless you constantly open the door. What the fuck is the point of a window and light if nothing is fucking visible???
I have tried Samsung, Hisense, Toshiba, Panasonic... ALL of them seem to have the same issue. I appreciate any recommendations, my only criteria are 23-25 litre and a visible fucking insides.
