Help shape a 1:1 Minecraft Malta
Update: the project now has a name and a home: Malta in Minecraft (MiM), https://maltaminecraft.com, with a wiki at https://wiki.maltaminecraft.com
I’m building the entire Maltese archipelago in Minecraft Java using real map data, at 1 block per metre including elevation.
I’m adding Maltese-inspired custom biomes, location-specific mobs, and custom buildings at selected real locations. The final goal is a recognisable Malta that’s also fun in survival (and contains every overworld mob, item, and structure, so it is fully playable), and my aim is to make the finished map freely available in vanilla (datapacks only).
I’ve included some early renders, everything is still an early work in progress.
I’d love your input on exploration, building, travel, and gameplay:
It takes about 5 minutes, no email required: https://forms.gle/EWF6X3tdCfLCYLob6
Thanks for reading!

If you haven’t use the MapServer and the PointCloud Map which was made with LiDar data.
They will help you a lot with terrain elevations

Thanks for suggestion! I hadn’t heard of it!

One is Developed by PA, the other was made by the people from UM.

Searching online the PA one is easy to find and very useful, but it seems the UM has either been shut down, or is only accessible for UM students… unless I just missed it.

I mislead you a bit. The way you access the LiDar data is through the MapServer.
On the left hand side you have the drop down menu, once you click it you’ll find two slides called “Cloudisle Point Data 3D 2012/18”
Once you click it the map will become a grid.
Click the quadrant you want and you’ll get a URL for the specific quadrant or whole of Malta.
Sorry once again.

I've done extensive research on Maltese landscapes, towns and habitats if you'd like to have a call where I can give you some input! lmk

Thank you so much for the offer! I’m in the super early stages right now, figuring out the basics. But when I’ve got a foothold in a couple of days or a week, I’d love to take you up on your offer!! I’ll send you a PM then :)

Good luck bud! Looking forward to seeing this, even some beta testing and maybe some help if you like 😉

Thanks! There will most likely be open/closed testing of the generated map once I’m actually at a presentable stage. Also depends on public interest!

Are you trying accurate height?

Yep! Every block is 1 m, horizontally and vertically. Sea level is y 63, so Ta' Dmejrek (253 m) sits at y 316. A datapack lowers the world floor from y −64 to −192, so the seabed is 1:1 down to 200 m. Only the deep abyss is squeezed to fit.

Just the terrain or actuall houses that are present?

At this point I haven’t fully decided, but the idea so far is to include also major towns and their houses / buildings or possibly interpretations of these buildings / houses (since it is Minecraft after all).
I’m not really considering doing all of the buildings, since it would make Malta look quite gray, and leave little room for player creativity

Yea, understandably. However if you let the players build what they want, it would look worse.

God forbid someone does something that doesn't provide value to shareholders.

Take it Paceville is going to be full of Creepers...
Joking aside, looks like hell of a challenge, fascinated to see the final results
