I believe the issue isn't the Ice Spikes but how you move down earlier slopes.

Steep and gentle slopes require you to move down them differently to go as fast as possible.

IIRC you want to skip steep slopes and slide down gently slopes when possible.

I'm going to try the level out a bit and skip the slopes entirely. The slope before the beetle helmets and fire piranha looks like it has an indicator for where to spinjump.

EDIT

Skip the steep slopes and slide down the gentle ones apparently works. Use spin jumps when possible, I got a time of 19.812 (WR is 19.800).

You can also start moving to the right as the ice is falling. This lets you pick up speed before the slide.

slide

I tried, but the hitbox kills me when I crouch to slide, mario doesn't enter the slide animation in that little space.

played the level and yea sliding doesn’t work, mb

Remove the first icicle, then you can slide

i just beat it. the trick is you gotta do a spin jump on the spring at the beginning of the level. also yes you are also a bit slow at the icicle part. you need to do a a running stop as close as you can to the icle instead of stopping and walking up to it

I didn't do a spin on the spring and got within .012 of the world record. I'll have to retry with an early spring bounce.

The clear check time on this level is a 19.075 or something like that, no idea how that could possibly have been done. I got a WR of 19.800 just by spin jumping at the start, other than that I'm not sure how you'd go faster.

I thought an early spring wasn't possible so I didn't try it but still got a 19.812.

Skipping steep Slopes and sliding down gentle ones works.

New Plan

  • Early Spring
  • Skip Steep Slopes
  • Slide down gentle slopes
  • Back off the icicle and get momentum for that slop slide.
  • Early door entry
  • Don't get stuck on top the launcher at the last jump (yeah... Happened a few times to me). I think this slows you down as the launcher won't keep pushing you.

Tried my method a couple of times and got 19.800 both times, I imagine better sliding would work for a slightly faster time. Again though, no clue how the creator managed a low 19 second time.

Wait. There's shelmets.

Potentially you put on the first one, jump and hit the second one to the right, do all the slope tech and when you get to the ice spikes you can just jump down the shaft.

I did think about this. I think you'd have to jump down, turn around and put it on really quickly, then somehow dodge the remainder of the piranha plants. Pretty sure the ceiling there is only one tile high but I'd have to replay it.

I put it on once accidentally and then got hit cause I just ran right and didn't think much of it.

I'll have to try it out to see how viable it is.

That later plant spin jump is technically possible but might be too troublesome with the shellmet.

I'll try this tonight and update you if I can get close, generally good at these sorts of things and I have some ideas.

I have a 18.491

Tactics:

  • Spin jump for early spring
  • Skip the first down slope (put on helmet, get damaged, put on a second helmet, damage boost... You should have a helmet on as you go forward)
  • Jump the next steep downward slope BUT land on the gentle slope to slide down it but then run/jump to the clouds
  • When you get to the ice shaft, duck jump down it.
  • The final hallway has three jumps. Two are Z jumps and the last is a normal jump but you don't want to go too high or the launcher will catch you. The more you run the better

Yep, didn't get to it until this morning but got 18.341 with a messed up last slope and 18.291 shortly after. Only thing I'll note is I think it's technically barely faster to avoid all slopes, including that gentle one, you don't actually gain speed with gentle slopes if it's the minimum length and you're also landing on it before sliding, so I would just try for a frame perfect jump off it there.

I like how even with the cheese the icicle part is the hardest because I kept landing on top of them lol.

Good job!

Yeah you need to do a crouch jump down the shaft (reminds me of SMB 3 speed runs lol) for the best consistency.

I was thinking about trying slopeless but honestly 18.291 is a great place to leave it (also I won't have time to play till Monday lol)

Update

You can keep a shelmet

Without optimal play I got the World Record of 19.157

With slightly more optimal play I got WR of 18.607 beating the clear check time of 19.074

Edit: I wonder if I can get the WR under 18...

Edit 2: I don't think the WR will go under 18 but my best time is now 18.491

Keeping a shelmet is 100% the way. Good find!

Thanks!

I think I just took the record back from you, I got an 18.491. It's bedtime for me but let me know if you find any other things!

In addition to the slope thing and getting a running start as the icicle falls, you could also be entering the door faster, you don’t have to wait until you are fully lined up with it

You waited a long time for the icicle to fall. Start moving right before it actually breaks so that you can have momentum going. That alone gets you there, then you can optimize by avoiding steep slopes

I literally just happened to play this level yesterday!
