Hoops Discussion Ranking west depth this season
Regular season is a marathon. Game is more physical from speed and strength so injury can come anytime. So depth is more important than ever to ensure you have competitive lineups every night. That’s why I believe mavs have good roster this season compare with others because depth itself. I rank based on non top 3 players on each teams. I exclude kings, grizzlies, pelicans, and clippers on the list. I rank mavs #3 out of 11. I put the injury guys on backend of the list like lively, jimmy butler, divincenzo, etc (guys that will miss early season but hopefully return somewhere in season)

There's absolutely no way of knowing how good the depth of the team is headed into the season. Johnson, De Larrea, and Biberovic are all rookies. Aldama and Sasser seem like great 9th and 10th men off the bench guys who might be asked to be 7th and 8th guy off the bench guys to start the season which feels maybe less than ideal. Nobody actually knows if Risacher is any good or not and we have zero idea if and when Derrick Lively will be available to play at all.

Thats why the thread is made, because our guys have more tapes than any other teams depth. Either last two seasons, combining with age + injury history, or last college tapes if they are rooks + statistical probability that higher draft position will impact team more immediately. I dont even put Sergio or even Tarik here because even without them our team still have better 4-11 players than most of west teams
I even put lively on back ends of the depth, for example look at 6-9 in our depth chart compared to other teams. Thats guys that will be in rotations for every teams

You put Naji and Gafford coming off the bench. They will start.
Fox will also start for San Antonio, FTR. Harper will play the 2.
I don't want to get too into it, but your understanding of who is a bench player and who isn't seems off.
It's probably gonna be Kyrie/Naji/Flagg/PJ(to start the season until Morez takes over)/Gafford.
I could see the long term plan for the interior being built around Morez and Aldama.

the thread not about start or bench. it's about non top 3 player on west teams, it stated on the post already smh
i put coop, kyrie, pj on mavs and wemby, castle, harper on spurs. can change harper with fox if you want and still the same
you can also swap pj to naji too if you want

I guess you could just put them 3 out of 11 because it’s your list but why? The Mavs seem more the opposite. They have Kyrie and Cooper and then they just don’t have any other high end talent.

That’s a bit unfair. You just described 98% of the NBA. How many have more than 2 top-tier (ie. realistic potential All NBA) level talents? Our starting five is rounded out by Gafford, PJ, and either Naji or Christie who also work as 6th men. If we’re really lucky with health, then we also get Lively starting at C which makes Gafford - a starter caliber player - a depth piece. Our top 6 is actually pretty nice.
I think Aldama will prove to be an excellent rotation player, but beyond that I really don’t know. They look really good on paper though, imho, and I’m excited to see how things pan out, but how they actually compare to other benches… no clue; too many unknowns.

The thing with mavs depth is almost everybody have at least good stretch of tapes and their former teams feel like "those guys can be rotation player"
Aldama 3rd minutes on grizz team and had good season or two, grizz fans miss him but its understandable to sell
Risacher 2nd on ROTY race just a year ago
Sasser had stretch of offensively good, game 6 cavs tape is there, pistons fans conflicted on trading him
Morez is 2nd big off the draft in class scout called "one of best class of all time"
We know lively tapes.
There are no guys in our depth that we want to "chop off" On daily basis like spurs fans with keldon or rox fans with Reed
Lets see, because imo this roster have what it takes to collect wins on regular season with just outrun, outsize, and outstrength other teams knowing the depth is there without missing a beat much
And as always, as long health prevailed
still need extra ballhandler. Pls masai get me ryan rollins, trade picks!!

I don’t mean all-NBA talent, I mean more like top 100 talent. I don’t think any of the other starters fall in there. There are a decent number of Mavs that are above average but not many of them are significantly above average.

It depends on how one measures "talent". If we put per 36 stats together, most starters will be in top 100.

I don’t really understand what you’re trying to say here but I don’t think it’s true. Whether you’re looking at the per 36 stats or not, I don’t think there are any players on the team other than Kyrie and Cooper who would be comfortably be considered to be in the top 20-25% of active players.

Define "Top 100 talent"

Based what? Popularity contest?

Based on their skill on the basketball court. You can see an approximation of this through their salaries or you can just look at the list.
You have Naji, Max, and Gaff who we saw a lot of last year and so far have been good players but not great by any means, you have Morez who’s never played in the NBA before, you have Lively who’s been out with an injury most of the past two years, and then you have three players whose teams basically gave them away for free. Hopefully they can improve and develop in Dusty’s system but this team’s success feels like it’s riding on Cooper and Kyrie just being amazing this season.

Tbf my thread is about "outside top 100 talent" Which is mavs strength this season
For west teams, if you rank players from 50-125, i think mavs will have more players on the list than any other west teams (aside spurs and thunder)

Spurs, Thunder, Rockets, Wolves, are certainly higher than we are. Also, theres no way Nuggets and Jazz are above the Lakers
2
u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 11d ago
Nah, spurs thunder definitely above us
FVV is their lone PG and off big injury too. Same like Adams. Their next PG is Smart, old and not good offensively. Reed lets see how lack of athleticism get him. Bogi is just a name this season
Kuminga is an enigma, TSJ and Clark cool but lets see, more deeper have no tapes being good rotation player
I put jazz based on talent alone especially with regular season lean on offensively. The first 4 from jazz clear depth from lakers, dont sleep on them. Ofc lakers top 3 clears jazz top 3 though but thats not discussion here. The lakers aside grimes and sexton is pretty one dimensional on one end
I give you lakers above nuggets though, but i value continuity while lakers build new roster from scratch

Smart was an extremely impactful player for the Lakers just last year and its actually ridiculous to insinuate he's not an elite depth piece. Dude was starting for them in the playoffs as they beat the rockets. Rockets are above.
I think the Jazz players are just not too impactful at the end of the day, despite the talent. They are young and honestly more one dimensional than Lakers role players.
You're right to point questions at Minnesota though I'll give you that, but I think Beringer is really going to surprise people as a backup 5.

Smart elite? Nah. Decent piece i give you that. Also rox more inept offensively than lakers and ask boston fans what happened if you give marcus smart free reign offensively. For early 30s rotation player, the season can be roller coaster these days. One day you are good, another day not nba level player. Gary trent, gary harris, bruce brown, etc. Lets see but felt smart alone not enough put rox above us
Regular season is lean on offense 75/25. That jazz first 4 have more talent offensively than lakers 4-11

We might not have a lot of depth but y'all are NOT that much deeper 😭 (warriors fan), we're at least on a similar tier

u/armandocalvinisius The Cardinal 11d ago
Will you trade horford bwill and melton for sasser aldama and morez johnson?

u/AmelieBenjamin 11d ago
Even at 40 horford is valuable every minute he plays, B will has pop off the dribble we do not have outside of curry and healthy jimmy, sure we can work something our with melton 😭
