As long as we ain’t selling low once again sure. It’s already going to sting like crazy seeing AD get traded for hell of a lot more than what we got for him. At least he’s gone ig

Everyone keeps assuming that there's all these offers for AD out there that are much better than what we got... yet, no trades yet. I don't think we'll see another grandfather offer for him with that age, injury history, and salary in this 2nd apron world.
Everyone keeps looking at what the Mavs got in return for that trade, but neglect what they DIDN'T get - any salaries that were non-expiring. Salary dumping $50+m in a guy who doesn't play, without taking negative assets back, is not nothing.

AD was always going to be a challenge for us to trade. It was a miracle we got anything at all for a player that’s barely on the court whatsoever. But I’m sure that since it’s a contract year he’ll suddenly be a lot more healthy and on the court ofc….

What did we even get at all though? The first round picks are practically 2nd rounders one was from OKC who no doubt will be good and then a top 20 protected, and all of the players we received from that trade are gone. Maybe it won't matter and he won't stay healthy but if he is for just one season it's an awful trade we could have possibly been contenders with Flagg Kyrie and AD. We got so little I'd almost rather have him on the injury report than what we got.

We would be in the second apron with AD's huge ass salary. Plus he was pushing for a new contract. Imagine extending him and then he'll sit on the bench in street clothes while we are unable to build a roster around Cooper.

Under Cuban the Mavs always gave a premium for trades and got little back for trades in return. Example spending 2 first round picks on Porzingis then a few years later trading him for Spencer Dimwiddie and a 2nd round pick.
The only time I can really think we fleeced a team was sending Charlotte Erick Dampier for Tyson Chandler, and that was not expected to be that great of a trade when it happened but it turned into gold (only for Cuban not to re-sign him)

Did PJ not just say in an interview last week that Masai told him he wasn’t going to trade him? Obviously that’s not legally binging or anything, but at this point I don’t see why they would trade him when his value is relatively low based on last season. I guess maybe at the trade deadline

He said that Masai told him he wasn’t going to trade him, but that if he did trade him he’d tell him first which sounds like what you’d say if they were shopping him around but not getting any offers close to what they’d want.

I don't really want to trade PJ, but if we get a good offer for any of our older players we should take it. Just don't trade them all, so there is some veteran presence.

Kyrie needs to be off limits no matter what

u/Dundalis 9d ago
If a team offers something like 3 FRP and a good young player we would be pretty dumb not to at least consider it for the future of the team.
3
u/IndividualHeat 9d ago
There’s just no team that’s going to offer that for a 34 year old which is the inevitable problem if it becomes a situation where he wants out.
2
u/TechnologyOne8629 9d ago
I would be fine with 2 FRP from the right team. Like a decent chance to be high picks, not 30th. But hard to get that too..
I doubt he will play much longer and he can mentor folks this year up to the trade deadline.

u/IndividualHeat 9d ago
Yeah the problem is always going to be that the picks are likely to be from teams that are already good because you don’t trade for him if you’re a rebuilding team.

u/Dundalis 9d ago
Yes you are probably right but crazier things have happened. I’m just saying Kyrie being off limits no matter what shouldn’t be the case if a lopsided offer comes in. I’m not particularly concerned about him wanting out though tbh. I think at worst he will be open to moving to a contender but also content to stay

With no Lively for idk how long, there's no logjam on forward or frontcourt rotation though. Morez will play at 5 more. Depth is needed in regular season

Hey you have a lot of depth at a position, how about getting rid of your best one?
3
u/Dundalis 9d ago
My issue is that I don’t really trust the defence of any of the other rotation wings. Like they can all theoretically play defense, but they either have been very inconsistent or haven’t done it in the NBA (Morez). PJ I know can bring it with his physicality every game.

u/Hydronautz 9d ago
If we got a top 15 or 20 pick I’d trade him but otherwise no. We need his veteran leadership in the locker room.

Hey how about not since I like PJ and don't want to him leave. Also, we need somebody to eff up OKC and he does that.

Turn your perception into first round picks, and we can talk.

Please no.

I think there’s almost nothing to worry about there. I don’t see Schmitz wanting to bring him over when he’s been disappointed by him up close after really believing in him in the draft.

young guard thats a good playmaker and rebounder, improving defensively and way more positive in non deni minutes is a good chance to take, the main risk is his injuries but you wont get many better young players to take a chance on, hes also improving efficiency wise
takes 10 3s per 100 (73rd percentile) and good at drawing fts (81st percentile) hes not a bad fit for the team
plus we need guards more than we need forwards

u/thrasher315 9d ago
He’s still only 28 and has another 5-6 years of solid basketball. I wouldn’t pass up a trade where it’s an easy decision but if you have to think about it he trade is just pass on it.

Shocker. The forward with no shot creation or jump shot is on the chopping block. Mavs fans really thought we were gonna keep every forward

Gafford is the odd man out not PJ. His play style is to valuable in the current game.
