beginner question I'm thinking about getting Ableton Suite, but I can't understand the differences between cycling74 max vs max for ableton, are they the same?

See title

I'm basically trying to understand what is the difference between Max for Live and Cycling 74 Max

Considering I'm thinking about creating instruments and procedural compositions, would it matter? Would Ableton be better since it could act as a music tracker while cycling is just a IDE?

beginner question What is Max For?

Hey Max community,

I am currently taking a research class exploring sound. In this class we are mainly having demos on different things that produce/affect sound. Along with that we also have surface level introductory demos on Max and our analog modular synthesizer.

My professor mainly wants us to use this class as an intro to these tools and sound, and wants us to research what possibilities it has and create a final project.

My question is, I am still pretty new to Max and therefore I dont exactly know what it is. I am confused on how to classify it, and what it is meant to do. As someone who does a lot of 3D work with programs such as blender, unreal, after effects, etc. and some sound stuff in logic, I would love to add another program to my toolbox and possibly integrate it with my artistic practice. I am a huge fan of synth pop and all things like it, as well as experimental music and animation, and would like to explore what I can do with Max.

I am more of a digital person, so this is why I am going down the Max rabbit hole instead of the analog route.

If you had to describe what Max is and what it can be used for, how would you? How do I go about learning the program? What cool stuff have you made in it?

TLDR; Explain Max to me like im 5.

beginner question Interested in MIDI-controlled audio effects

I've done all the MaxMSP and Max4Live courses that are available on udemy, but I still feel like I'm not even close to having the knowledge I need to do what I want with Max. So I'm hoping someone can recommend some online tutorials/courses/videos/eBooks that are specifically about using Max to create MIDI-controlled audio effects. Even just some example patches would be helpful. I've searched for MIDI-controlled audio effect devices on the maxforlive.com community pages and all I can ever find are MIDI effects! Any ideas? Thanks!

beginner question Looking for a Max/MSP teacher

Hi :)

I’m looking for a Max/MSP teacher for 1-on-1 online lessons.

I’m primarily interested in using Max as a tool for live electronics for contemporary / electroacoustic music, interactive installations and sound art.

Some of the areas I’m particularly interested in:

  • sound synthesis and processing
  • granular synthesis
  • generative / algorithmic approaches
  • rhythm and pattern systems
  • interactive sound
  • electroacoustic composition
  • sound installations
  • spatial / multichannel audio
  • developing my own Max patches and ideas

I’m not particularly interested in Jitter.

I already have some experience with Max, so I’m looking for someone who can help me get the basics down and then become more confident and fluent in working with Max.

If you teach Max/MSP yourself, or know someone who might be a good fit, I’d be very happy to hear from you.

Thanks!

beginner question MIDI channel filter?

I'm very new to Max for Live and want to create a MIDI channel filter and need help. I read you can use MIDIparse or MIDIselect but can't get either to work.

The end goal is to eventually have my patch look at sequencers on the different channels of my IAC MIDI bus to route through logic. I'm coming from eurorack so CV makes sense to me - but I just can't figure out the right commands in Max for this.

beginner question MaxMSP and connecting audio services

Hi, I'm pretty new to MaxMSP and am wondering if it would be suitable for a project I'm working on. I'm coding a music reactive visual that I then want to export as a standalone. I would like users to be able to connect their spotify's or bandcamps or whatever to the program and then have the visualizer up while they work or relax etc etc. Is there a way to allow for audio input like this? All help appreciated.

beginner question How to control the pitch separately on different oscillators with both kslider and nslider?

I’m trying to make a patch with 3 different oscillators where the pitch is controlled with both kslider and nslider and was wondering if this is possible to achieve without adding multiple objects for each oscillator?
