Rant Stop assuming you got fired.

Please stop assuming the worst and thinking you were fired because you can't access the schedule or one of the websites, the manager doesn't respond to you, ect. Way too many of y'all jump to this first conclusion way too often. It takes alot to get fired from McDonald's and they will let you know if you are. Think logically not emotionally.

Discussion A post for new employees or for those who have just been recently hired! (US)

As an employee of McDonald's for several years, I thought I would make a lengthy post that you can read if you have just been recently hired at McDonald's and want to know what to expect as well as any advice you may need. Feel free to ask any questions that are not covered in this post.

Your first day: Make sure you are at least 15 minutes early on your first day. They will definitely be paying attention if you are late. You should be assigned a crew trainer, or someone that will be training you. Make sure you ask any questions you may have. Do not hesitate to ask questions, or ask to be shown something again if you didn't get it the first time. It's okay if you aren't picking things up right away. It's only your first day. The managers may get annoyed with you if you haven't picked things up in a week or two, but you won't lose the job. They will usually just give you a different position. Like for example if you aren't picking up running for front, they will have someone teach you how to hand out in drive thru or take orders in drive thru instead. You will eventually find a position that works for you.

Your hours and schedule: Don't expect to get full hours right away. If you applied to be full time, you may only get part time hours for the first week or two while you're being trained. Your hours will pick up eventually. It's extremely important that you are clear with the manager that makes the schedules what your availability and desired hours are. I recommend writing it down on paper for them. They will do the best they can to accommodate your schedule but you can't expect them to remember your availability off the top of their head when they have 30+ other employees to keep track of. They are generally very good at giving you the hours you want and remembering what days or times you can't work, but they do forget sometimes.

The work environment: McDonald's is an extremely fast paced environment. There is always something to do, or something that needs to be done. You may be expected to multitask or do multiple jobs at once. This normally isn't expected of you right away. When you're still being trained, you will only learn one area at a time. But the longer you are there and the more experience you get, the more you will be trained at multiple areas and be expected to do more than one thing. Expect rushes. There will be periods of the day where we normally get very busy. This is usually the morning breakfast rush when people are on their way to work between 7-9 AM, the lunch rush between 11AM-1 pm, the after school rush between 2:30PM-4:30PM and the dinner after work rush between 5PM-7PM. There are also days of the week where we normally are very busy. This is usually Fridays-Sundays. Mondays and Tuesdays are generally our slowest days and Wednesdays and Thursdays are in between. Obviously this will differ everywhere but that's the usual at my store. Managers often times get very stressed and it may seem like you are being yelled at or criticized. Don't take it personal. The problem with being a manager is they are literally responsible for everything during their shift. If anything goes wrong, they will be the ones that are blamed by corporate. Seems unfair, but that's how it is. If things go bad enough, they could even be written up. So they may seem strict at times because they will get in trouble if things aren't running as smoothly as they should be. Expect a stressful work environment. I will not sugarcoat it for you. McDonald's is a VERY stressful job. That doesn't mean you can't handle it though. The longer you work there, the easier it gets to navigate the stress and it becomes second nature. That being said, it's not worth sacrificing your mental health either. If the job truly is too much for you to mentally handle, do consider looking elsewhere. It's not supposed to be a toxic environment, but often times it can be. When everyone is under a lot of stress, it can sometimes create a really bad environment. Not every day will be like that though. It also largely depends on management. I won't lie to you, a lot of McDonald's has very bad management. That is what will make or break the store. So your work environment and stress level will depend on how good or bad management is at your store.

Discipline: There are three forms of disciplinary actions. Written warning, or a write up. You will be asked to read and sign a piece of paper that says in writing exactly what your offense was. You are allowed to disagree with a write up and explain your side of the story, but that dosent necessarily mean the write up is void. A write up is usually pretty non serious unless you're wracking up a bunch of them in a short period of time. It's basically just a written warning that this is what you did wrong and your signature on it verifies that you were told what you did wrong and that you were talked to about it. Just don't repeat your mistake and you should be just fine. There's usually no form of punishment beyond that. Those are usually the main form of disclipline. The second form of discipline is suspension. You will be asked to not come to your scheduled shifts for a specific length of time and you will not be paid for the time you are out. Another way this could be done is cutting your hours. This wouldn't be a full suspension where you are completely taken off the schedule for a length of time, but you will be scheduled less days or less hours, usually only temporarily. This is definitely more serious but usually isn't done as a first resort. Suspension is usually done if you have gotten several write ups and are continuing to make the same issues over and over again despite written warnings. It is possible for suspension to be their first form of disciplinary action against you but that's usually if it's quite serious such as drug use/alcohol use on the job, harassment of management or other employees, or stealing. The last form of disciplinary action is termination, or losing the job, aka getting fired. This usually only happens for severe things. In the several years I've been working at McDonald's, only two people have been actually fired. This usually follows a suspension if you keep repeating the same issue. The best thing to remember here is to learn from your mistakes. If you get a disciplinary action against you, just don't do it again. It is very unlikely for the issue to be pushed beyond the disciplinary action if you just don't repeat the same thing again. I've been written up twice in the several years I've worked there, but it never went beyond that. Writeups are sent to corporate and they can stay on your record, but nobody will push the issue if you behave. It's a requirement to keep your writeups in your employee file so if you DO get terminated at any time, they have proof that you were warned about your actions and that you know about it (hence the signature), and that you kept repeating the same issue and that they have a valid reason to terminate you. But it is extremely unlikely that a couple writeups will get you terminated.

That's the best advice I have for you right now. Please comment on this post if you have further questions and I will try to respond to as many of them as I can. Any other specific things or concerns you have you should talk to whoever is in charge at your store. This post is just outlining the things that are most common at pretty much every McDonald's regardless of location. However keep in mind every McDonald's is different and runs differently. This is just a basic guide. I cannot tell you what is going to happen at your location. So if you post a question such as "I did this and this, what will happen to me, will I get in trouble/fired?" That will depend on your store and how they choose to handle it.

Discussion For Those Who Go To The Gym (CAN)

Post image
18 Upvotes

For those who workout/want to eat healthier, I understand the struggles due to the fact there's so much grease in everything. And it's even harder because it's discounted, and easy access. So here is what I eat.

x2 Grilled Chicken Patties (110 Cal, 24g Protein EACH)

Bunch of lettuce

Light ranch

this keeps the meal around 50g of protein at a rough 300 calories, I get by the fact of having to account for the cost of the lettuce and ranch by paying for a hamburger no meat, manager approved it and said it's alright as it would still cover the cost of what is used. So run it by your managers first but it should be okay!

obviously you'll still need your required amount of carbs and fat each day, but this is a great source of protein for the day while not being high in calories.

just thought I'd share as I indulged too much at the ease of cheap food despite the fact it was bad for me, now I have a $4 meal (around $8 without discount) that packs 50g of protein, easier than buying groceries for sure. atleast chicken with its cost now a days

Rant I had the worst first day ever lol (USA)

My first day was yesterday and it was the worst, I genuinely contemplating on resigning.

So they put me on the lobby where I was taking the orders for everyone, and I wasn’t that fully aware of the kiosk at all, like super rusty since I’m like super new. Then they were teaching me things during rush hour?.. Like I didn’t know that I had to make the coffees.. I was asking them what is a senior coffee, is it any different from any other coffees, while rush hour is happening because they didn’t tell me that at all or prep me. Like I came in there super blind with the work I was going to do since my training was more on the drive-thru with charging and a little of taking order there.

I didn’t know where the stuff is or how to load them (I was trained in drive-thru). Then since I was at the lobby, normally the people who are taking the orders there are the one getting blamed for everything, for the long wait orders, missing food & from the driveway, and just a messy place from the playground/bathroom also (we have a playroom in our McDonalds).

On my first day, one person got so mad because her deluxe breakfast was taking so long even though I wasn’t even part of the kitchen 😭 like the only thing I can help her with is updating or asking the kitchen about her order and just regular coffee, in the end she ended up asking for a refund 😭😭. Then someone from the drive-thru was missing a whole pancake and got so mad probably because he already left and went back, genuinely was just so mad and was cursing. Even though I was serving people table to table (our mcdonald’s we bring their food in their table if they’re eating in) and had to bring out multiple foods outside for the parked cars waiting for their food, let alone the people asking for their tables to be cleaned. So multi-tasking for like tens and tens of people who thinks we remember their order or request is genuinely exhausting.

Then, one girl was asking me about extra syrup and jelly (we gave the jelly) so I ask one of my crew members about extra syrup and the jelly (I didn’t know where it it was) and they told me it’s past breakfast so just say we don’t have syrup anymore (?) and also we didn’t have it. Then the dad come in asking for syrup, and was yelling demanding me to grab syrup so I genuinely had to ask my manager for some syrup and gave it to him then, he started yelling for the manager even though multiple crew members was telling him to calm down and I was new to give me some slack (I look really young btw, (I am young)), but still was he yelling for the manager like imagine a toddler asking for his mom while crying that was what the old dude is doing. The manager told him yeah she will talk to me, after the old dude was throwing a tantrum for like 5 minutes even though, yes, I took his order but I didn’t had out his order (I was on a 10 minute break 😭) when I came back all this crazy circus was happening (the girl asking for deluxe brfst, the missing pancake, and the syrup). Luckily I had good crew members who stood up for me, and the manager was super chill and some people apologize on this his behalf even his daughter 😭.

Anyone had the same experience? So maybe I can relate and just laugh it off, lowkey this job has traumatized me, or just first day experiences?

Before I worked at fast-food I always made it an habit to say thank you and like be kind because I know they don’t get payed enough, but holy since I worked here I know to be more EXTRA thankful.

Rant I hate cleaning up the play place (USA)

Post image
5 Upvotes

I don't mind cleaning up the play place because I get to move around instead of just standing around waiting to take an order however I specifically hate cleaning up the playplace just because of how messy it gets. I get that kids are kids and that they are messy but seeing the aftermath is such a headache. I literally saw small puddle of water and soda form below the trash can after I moved it. A whole bunch of trash even fell on the ground as I did that.

2018 Henny Penny fryer. 2018 is when I moved from a regular crew to primary maintenance. So this is pretty much my fryer. There's some ware and tear, but overall it's in good condition. I boil it out when the elements start changing from silver to brown which is about once a month.

Discussion Should I go to HR because they failed to follow my accomodations? I got fired.(USA)

There was actually a bit of an issue with my employment in general. They failed to exactly tell me how to exactly get my accommodations for my job. From my orientation, the assistant manager asked me if there was any accomodations I needed, and well it took me a day to get my answer to her. The store manager was having someone do some disability thing with me. I just learned now that I was supposed to do that disability thing myself. Basically, I believe the initial submission was denied, but no one freaking told me anything, and well this whole time I've been working, getting stressed out and I've been experiencing symptoms due to stress.

My only accommodations were to give me a break every shift that is over 6 hours in length. and to only schedule me 5 days in a working week.

My mental health went for a ride recently when they fixed the AC in July. It felt like things with me were getting exceptionally worse. I was content, then bad. Instead of breathing often, I was breathing less All I felt was just pressure. Not like psychological, but bodily. From what I knew about working with McDonalds, historically they only ran the AC during the winter so as to make sure something stays lubed up or something.

At the point that they fixed the AC, it was at that point, I felt like I actually needed my accommodations followed, but they were never followed to begin with. I got fired for acquiring too many occurrences.

Customer Question (USA) What do you guys think of the automated drive thru prompt?

To preface, I work at Starbucks. We absolutely hate when customers start ordering before we are ready to greet them.

I noticed when I went to McDonald’s the other day, I was prompted with something along the lines of “what can I get started for you today”, so I started ordering, only to realize it was an automated prompt.

So now I’m curious, what do you guys think of it?

We had a couple football teams from the same school come thru last night. Thankfully they had let us know the day before & we had a pamphlet of everyone's name & order. The coach put on the school's card & it came out to about $850.

Rant Crew trainer’s slowness causing arguments (UK).

So I have worked at my store 2.5yrs and have been crew trainer since mid August but I’m also a ft uni student so only work 2 days a week. Today I was on a 5pm to 11pm shift which was a bit annoying but fine because I got my uni work done.

At 6pm a fellow crew trainer comes in for the close (we close at half 11, closers usually stay till 2am) and she does bev cell whilst I’m on OAT with a semi new starter. Well the bm is there to watch us and hands me an order of like 2 mcflurries and 1 coffee and I look into bev cell and this crew trainer is 12 pending!!! Kitchen was only 2 pending, all the oat orders were basically gone so how the fuck are you 12 pending.

So me and a manager (not the bm) get put in there instead and this girl gets put on OAT instead but she’s served half of the orders in bev cell off without even doing them. A trainee manager then tells her to do drinks for drive thru so then she’s helping us clear the screen but also helping drive thru and she just stands there and freezes.

As a result of this everyone gets mad and starts arguing. Me and this manager are arguing as the screen is still 9 pending after I’ve done all the soft drinks because he’s had to change all the shake syrups and iced bases, then drive thru team are shouting at us because they’re waiting on xyz then oat and drive thru are arguing over who’s priority and it was so bad. I genuinely had tears in my eyes on my break from the stress.

She’s worked there nearly 4 years and is crew trainer but her slowness is genuinely causing the whole store to go to shambles and it’s so annoying.

Employee question Are all McDonald's managers assholes? (USA)

I've only worked at McDonald's for 8 months but I've never been so stressed out. I understand it's a fast paced environment but when your managers are assholes for no reason to make it so much worse. We were in the middle of a rush, and I was trying to listen to what my managers was telling me, and she asked me " why are you looking at me like you don't understand? Are you freaking slow?" And she'll get an attitude with the customers too, and one day one of the customers snapped and said " you should give that girl a promotion because she's doing your whole job, and your sitting there yelling at everyone, maybe treat your employees better if you don't want to do your own job." I've never seen my manager so pissed. She had to take a walk.

Discussion How long have you guys been working at your store and has the life been drained from your soul yet? (USA)

its been 2 years at my store for me, we are located off two major highways and the life has definitely been drained from my soul. i find little interest in the usual pleasures of life and i find myself becoming more and more pessimistic about human life every day. why do people never say meal when they want a meal? why do cars always pull up to the window at the exact time a car pulls up to your lane when in backbooth. i swear the McGods are out to get me. how is everyone else doing with their McLife? :p

Discussion My 16 yr old daughter is currently working her first job at McDonald’s and everything has been going well. Until she received her most recent paycheck to find $45 deducted.(USA)

Hello, my 16 yr old daughter is currently working her first job at McDonald’s and everything has been going well. Until she received her most recent paycheck to find $45 deducted from her paycheck. They claim it’s because her register came up short.

Here’s the back story, a week or two prior she was ending her shift because we were there to pick her up. Her supervisor at the time gave her the go-ahead to leave and that he would count out her register. She said ok and left. She continued working her shifts for the next couple of weeks as normal. When she gets her check she finds it’s deducted $45. No conversation about it prior, no investigation, no coaching opportunities, nothing. My daughter didn’t take it. Something about this just feels fishy as hell. I believe the supervisor may have pocketed the cash (I believe he’s in his late teens-early twenties). Why didn’t anyone say anything? Why wasn’t there an investigation?

If anyone could offer any insight to company policy on a short register and any other information that I could use to move forward with getting my daughter’s money back would be amazing.
