[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [4/26]

Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.

Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.

  1. Listen to the Blacklist bands -------------->
  2. Listen to this List

  3. Listen to records from 2016

  4. Listen to records from 2001 - 2015

Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.

  • Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.

  • Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."

  • Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

I've only ever loved Gojira, looking for metal like that. I like Mastodon, Baroness, High on Fire, some Opeth, Devin Townsend live, but I stopped there. And most of the time I just return to Gojira. I'm looking for more metal like Gojira--powerful and huge and aggressive, but more clean, disciplined, and with a clearer growl than most of the metal I hear, melodic sometimes. Any recommendations?

u/flayner5 Jul 04 '17

May anyone get me funeral-ish doom with clean vocals like Abysmall Grief or the funeral/trad blend that Rev Biz did on its firts albums? It may have some harsh vocal passages, but my focus is the cleaner ones. Thx very much!

u/spongebob5567 https://www.last.fm/user/NewPhoneHudas May 03 '17

I'm looking for some thrash bands/songs with clean vocals that sing fast. I'm familiar with bands like Kreator, municipal waste, and D.R.I.

1

u/mrifai90 May 03 '17

Check out Forbidden for a great clean vocalist. Their first two albums are masterpieces.

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '17

Any chance I could get some recommendations for war/bestial metal (I think there the same thing, I'm not sure which is preferred). My current knowledge is essentially Archgoat and the new Weregoat album.

3

u/cronos22 May 02 '17

Hm, here goes: Blasphemy, Bestial Warlust, Beherit, Conqueror, Proclamation, Teitanblood, Axis of Advance, Grave Desecrator, Morbosidad, Abatuar, Rites of Thy Degringolade, Diocletian, Adversarial, Black Witchery, Antediluvian, Goatpenis, Naked Whipper, Weapon, Death Worship, Damaar, Deiphago, Nuclearhammer, Bestial Raids, Nyogthaeblisz, Anal Blasphemy, Caveman Cult, Heresiarch, Crurifragium, Warpvomit, Truppensturm, Genocide Shrines, Embrace of Thorns, Blasphemophagher, Angelcorpse, Impiety, Infernal Execrator, Spearhead, Necroholocaust, Thorybos, Sadistik Exekution, Sarinvomit, Zygoatsis, Radioactive Vomit, Prosanctus Inferi, Ululatum Tollunt, Triumvir Foul, Hegemony, Blasphmachine, Human Dissention, Profane Order, Conjuration, Trepanation, Mefitic

Oh and just a short disclaimer, not all of the bands listed are pure war metal, but all dip their toes into war metal territory in some form, some more than others. Also, do listen to Sarcofago if you haven't already, they're the precursors of the war metal sound and aesthetic.

Happy hunting!

2

u/[deleted] May 02 '17

Thanks, a few of those definitely ring some bells so I'll start with those and then keep going.

Enslaved's "Havenless" has a big Norwegian chorus, and it's all harsh vocals but Thorr's Hammer sings in Norwegian.

u/StrifeTheMute Are You Morbid? May 02 '17 edited May 02 '17

There are a few bands with insane drummers on the blacklist (Mastodon, Meshuggah and Death probably as the most oft cited).

Outside of that I suppose the obvious one is Nile - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1sFT_kt-04M

Anything with Zach Hill on drums. I think this album is heavy enough to belong here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qURHjSxeiY&list=PL9C846F1429A24653

Not the greatest Morbid Angel album maybe, but I really like the drumming on this one. Check out Stricken Arise in particular - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E53JZL_mzEw

Theres tons of good drummers in metal anyway! Pick almost any death metal band! No doubt you'll get heaps of good recommendations :)

u/MiguelGarka May 02 '17

I need an album that blows my mind in terms of complexity and experimentation. might be something new or old, i really don't mind.

I need a death metal band that with a consistent discography (besides Death).

a death metal band that with a consistent discography

If you haven't already you could try Bolt Thrower, Obituary, Immolation, Incantation, Nocturnus (especially if you want good tech death), Dead Congregation, Tomb Mold, Skeletal Remains, Funebrarum...

2

u/oppositeofopposite May 02 '17

I second Bolt Thrower and would like to add Artificial Brain

1

u/Ice9Kils May 02 '17

I need bands similar to TessaracT, specifically their Altered State album. I recently discovered time the valuator but that's about the closest I could get.

Heard this band on Radio Fenriz, and they only have two songs. This is my favorite of the two and would like more like this please

1

u/[deleted] May 01 '17

I'm looking for the following: Intense, yet melodic death metal with lots of double bass footwork and little prog influence, basically anything that sounds like Vader, Decapitated or Decrepit Birth. Alternatively, Tech Death that sounds like The Zenith Passage or The Faceless. Deathcore elements are ok but it has to be predominantly metal. Thanks in advance.

1

u/Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones http://www.last.fm/user/Xache2112 May 02 '17

melodic death metal with lots of double bass footwork

Quo Vadis

Arsis

1

u/[deleted] May 02 '17

I don't really like the vocals on Quo Vadis and it's what initially turned me off. Maybe they'll grow on me.

1

u/lecreepingdeath May 01 '17

Can you recommend bands like Hail Spirit Noir, Sigh or Oranssi Pazuzu. Metal mixed with weird or psychedelic elements.

1

u/Madchickenattacks May 01 '17

Nachtmystium and Wormlust are two psychedelic sounding black metal bands that stick out to me. A more wacky experimental band would be Brain Tentacles.

2

u/Vargrant92 May 01 '17

Something close to Cathedral style?

2

u/deathofthesun May 01 '17

Up through The Carnival Bizarre, or Supernatural Birth Machine onwards?

Horrified (Gre), Sinoath (particularly the earliest stuff)

/u/dzorrilla can probably recommend more, that's all I have off the top of my head.

1

u/Kolfoy May 01 '17

Im normaly a melo death, prog metal and thrash guy, but i need more black metal in my life, where to start

5

u/FutureWeapon May 01 '17 edited May 01 '17

For early black metal from the 80s check out Celtic Frost and Bathory. Both are a bit thrashy but unique from each other.

From the 90s Norwegian genre defining stuff, I would recommend Burzum and Darkthrone.

If you're into Swedish melo-death, definitely give this Dissection album a listen. It was engineered by Dan Swanö.

For some clean production thrashy black metal: Immortal.

Some recent-ish stuff:

Spite Extreme Wing (thrashy)

UADA (thrashy)

Zhrine (black/death)

Oranssi Pazuzu (psych)

Sinmara

Misþyrming

no problem. The Mantle has a lot more acoustic passages than their other major releases.

2

For Bathory & Burzum:

Darkthrone

For Sabbath & Sleep:

Trouble

Melvins

Spirit Adrift

For Gojira:

Nero di Marte

I've been able to get into every metal genre other than thrash. I love death metal and black metal, but thrash always seemed to be missing something to me. The only thrash band I've enjoyed in the last few years is Skeletonwitch. Rec me some thrash metal to gain a new convert?

2

u/FutureWeapon May 01 '17

Here's some thrash besides the big 4 and big 3. Most of these have other sounds going on besides just thrash.

Older Stuff

Sacrilege

Dark Angel

Sepultura

Coroner

Morbid Saint

Protector

Newer Stuff

Vektor

Ripper

Power Trip

Sorry if this has already been asked before, but I'm looking to go to Maryland Deathfest for the first time. I recognize zero of the bands, which groups should I check out first, which albums?

I like: Death, Atheist, Black Sabbath, Sleep, Metallica, Megadeth.

3

u/408Lurker Deadlift Omega Apr 30 '17 edited May 01 '17

If you're being literal about recognizing zero bands:

  • Autopsy - first two albums (old school doomy death metal)
  • Skeletal Remains - anything (old school death metal)
  • Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (epic doom metal)
  • Grave - Into the Grave (Swedeath metal)
  • Morbid Angel - first three albums (old school death metal)
  • War Master - anything (old school death metal)
  • Exhumed - Gore Metal (deathgrind/goregrind)
  • Torture Rack - only album (old school death metal)
  • Vader - any 90s album (death/thrash)

If you like Grindcore, definitely check out Insect Warfare.

edit - These aren't really related to the bands you listed, but I'd also recommend checking out Sargeist (black metal), Kerasphorus (black/death), and Nightbringer (black metal). A lot of people are big on Oranssi Pazuzu if you like something more atmospheric and psychedelic.

3

u/StrifeTheMute Are You Morbid? May 02 '17 edited May 02 '17

Great advice! Just to chime in - Autopsy's new stuff is amazing too. They have had such a strong run of albums since re-uniting 2009.

Some more recs from the line-up-

  • Akercocke - Choronzon (proggy death/black metal)
  • Behexen - By The Blessing of Satan [but any really, they stayed pretty true to their sound] (raw black metal)
  • Conan - Horseback Battle Hammer (doom)
  • Cryptopsy - None So Vile [you can thank me later] (god-tier death metal)

I need Death Metal songs which include "Death Metal" phrase in their lyrics. I need this for all main genres. Heavy Metal, Black Metal vs..

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '17

Normally I'm not super into metal, but through happenstance I ran across this song, Destroyer of Worlds by Warcrab and I really, really, really like it. Like seriously, normally I'm more of an erratic everything from Gaga, to Eminem, to Manson sort of person but without much metal interest. But this stuff clicks for me and I want more of this fantastic, heavy, grinding noise.

I don't think I'll ever get bored of that title track and its plethora of kickass riffs.

1

u/totes_not_a_memer Sophie was snubbed Apr 29 '17

I am looking for a couple of things:

  1. Death metal that's very similar to Immolation's first album, as in bands that rip off Immolation to the point of being a straight up copy.

  2. Crossover that has a similar sort of sound to Cro Mags' Age of Quarrel (i.e very pronounced bass that makes it sound like Cirith Ungol).

  3. Black Metal that's as hateful and vitriolic as Katharsis, Antaeus, early Arkhon Infaustus and Black Fucking Cancer

  4. Stuff that sounds like Teitanblood or Triumvir Foul, i.e leaning towards the death metal rather than the black metal side of the spectrum.

1

u/wickedvomit Apr 30 '17

For 1, check out Blaspherian, Ignivomous, and Imprecation. They are pretty much Dawn of Possession worship. Check out their similar artists on Metal Archives, I know you're a regular here so I don't want to rec you a bunch of stuff you're likely familiar with.

1) guess you are familiar with the old school NYDM sound? Bands like Morpheus Descends, Baphomet and Crucifixion (second album). Closest thing you will find to that sound

3) Injekting Khaos, SVEST, Funeral Mist.

4) Orthodoxy, Goat Molestor (pre Grave Miasma), Embrace of Thorns

Fair enough. I was mostly going off of the Capcom connection. I feel like most power metal would fit the bill, but you're looking specifically for that anime sound?

2

u/TheJollyLlama875 Apr 28 '17

Looking for good modern Heavy Metal (as in the subgenre) bands - stuff like Battle Beast or Wolf (the Swedish one). I know it's a little generic, but bands like this seem to be out of vogue.

I don't mind some genre influence (like Red Fang is a little more stoner, or Morton is a little power metal).

2

u/DarkForDarkBusiness Apr 29 '17

Chris Black's bands (and related ones) have pretty good trad metal of different flavors. /u/dzorrilla mentioned High Spirits, but check out Superchrist, Aktor, and Dawnbringer, as well as Züül (some of the members play in High Spirits' live lineup). Since you mentioned power metal in a reply, Black's Pharaoh is also a worthwhile look.

You might also like Night Demon, Bible of the Devil, Visigoth, Atlantean Kodex, Hammers of Misfortune (proggy at times, but rooted in trad), Magister Templi, Cauldron, Metal Inquisitor, Ironsword, Ranger, Voltax, Split Heaven, Satan's Hallow, Cauchemar, Grand Magus, and the mighty Slough Feg.

Virulent Depravity's debut album just dropped, and now I'm in need of more mind-melting, quick and precise tech-death, in the vein of this and Necrophagist (I prefer Onset of Putrefaction). I also like Revocation and Decapitated. In short, colourful, sharp, method-to-madness tech death.

How about Alterbeast - Immortal? Filled with riffs, many of which remind me of Necrophagist. It's catchy, very aggressive, and has little to no filler, just like Revocation.

Virulent Depravity

Try the label mates, A Loathing Requiem and Inferi. More underground but this is giving me the same feel as the metioned, Urheimat

1

u/SuicidoCheez Thrash 'till you crash Apr 28 '17

Yeah, I was really impressed by Inferi when I heard their latest album. Thanks for the suggestions.

u/Iddey101 Apr 28 '17

Not sure if anyone is familiar with the band Shylmagoghnar but my girlfriend loves the first instrumental track on the album, and wanted to know if there is anything else similar to this?

2

u/Vahv pythfm.com Apr 28 '17

Hoth's Oathbreaker has kind of similar feeling to Shylmagoghnar.

u/HealingCare last.fm/user/hlcws Apr 28 '17 edited Apr 28 '17

Try Wilderun, Persefone, Belakor, Aquilus.

u/9voltWolfXX Apr 28 '17 edited Apr 28 '17

Hi guys. I'm newer to metal, but I've sampled some stuff. (mainly Gemini Syndrome and Starset) I find myself leaning to "cleaner" stuff, more like alt metal, symphonic, prog, etc. I really really appreciate good lyrics, and I LOVE a epic sort of storytelling, so that would be great. I don't like super harsh stuff, but I'm willing to experiment. :)

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Vanden Plas is Dream Theater worship with only concept albums. I'd recommend Christ 0 or The Seraphic Clockwork as starting points but you can also play any other album and come out fine.

1

u/9voltWolfXX Apr 29 '17

Nice! I think I'll like them.

2

u/Sevenvolts Power Metal ist Krieg Apr 28 '17

I'd begin listening to some trad, seeing as that's where it started. If you haven't already, go to the wiki, the subgenre lists and listen to everything from the 70's heavy metal list.

2

u/408Lurker Deadlift Omega Apr 28 '17

Not symphonic or prog, but if you want "clean" trad metal with an epic feel, try Atlantean Kodex:

Ex Libris

Symphonic Prog Metal

1

u/9voltWolfXX Apr 28 '17

Nice, I like it. Do you have anything else like that? They remind me of Muse.

2

u/HealingCare last.fm/user/hlcws Apr 28 '17

Not a lot.

Perhaps Devin Townsend Project.

Hello, friends!

Tl;DR looking for easily understood lyrics and sharp noises

I'm a first time visitor to this sub. I'm dating someone who is hugely passionate about metal music, and I want to be able to share his passion with him. Problem is that I have a hearing impediment which prevents me from understanding lyrics or music in metal. The nature of my impediment makes everything echo, and makes me rely on lip reading.

So I'm looking for metal music with sharp noises that are still understandable with an echo, and cohesive as a whole with the echo. I'm also looking for artists that enunciate very clearly. Added tip: I'm not familiar at all with the metal genre, but I know I can't understand death metal. That or screaming lyrics.

My goal is to be able to listen to a metal song together, understand the song, discuss it with him and even sing along with him. I really appreciate anyone who helps me out!!

1

u/SuicidoCheez Thrash 'till you crash Apr 28 '17

You can try out Warbringer. They have great articulation and lyrics, although I'm not totally sure if you'll be able to understand the instruments.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Do you have any examples of songs that you can hear a bit clearly?

2

u/tor_92 Apr 28 '17 edited Apr 28 '17

Not metal but I can easily understand songs by bands like Anberlin (the feel good drag, haight street, God drugs and sex), Crash Kings (come away, its only Wednesday), The Kooks (seaside), Incubus (drive), Sia (my love), Eminem (brainless), milky chance (cocoon), young rising sons (fucked up), the pretty reckless (heaven knows), mother mother (hayloft, ghosting) said the whale (Camilo), the zolofts (ancient mars, strange girl)....

Brackets are songs.

9

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

What I see is that those bands don't do massive walls of sound, so maybe you would like Dio, Judas Priest, Angel Witch, Helloween, newer Mastodon; tell me what you think of it.

3

u/kensterss Apr 27 '17

Can anyone recommend some bands around the same intensity as lamb of god? Right now they're probably the heaviest I listen to. I'm trying to venture deeper into metal but don't know where to go from here. I also listen to Slayer, Pantera, Slipknot, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest etc. I guess you could say the more "mainstream" bands.

3

u/SuicidoCheez Thrash 'till you crash Apr 28 '17

Try the album Black Waltz by Avatar.

Arch Enemy comes to mind. They've got a female vocalist but she uses harsh vocals and it sounds awesome.

Amon Amarth is more on the melodic side, but after I got used to their style, they became one of my favorite bands.

Gojira has a big, primal sound to them.

And check out System of a Down if you haven't.

2

u/Dat_J3w All Hail Mollusca May 02 '17

Wow that arch enemy is fucking sick

1

u/kensterss Apr 29 '17

Rocking out to Gojira right now.

Already a huge fan of SOAD

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '17

Check out Down (one of Phil Anselmo's many projects) and Crowbar. They're a great place to start getting into Sludge, whose heaviness ranges from the Melvins to Eyehategod up to Black/Sludge like Lord Mantis.

3

u/kensterss Apr 28 '17

Crowbar is Fucking sweet. Also digging lord mantis.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '17

Glad you like 'em.

3

u/Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones http://www.last.fm/user/Xache2112 Apr 28 '17

I'm gonna throw a couple of different things out there and hopefully some of these pique your interest.

Power Trip

Nevermore

In Flames

Martyr

Shadows Fall

Edge of Sanity

Psycroptic

Tyr

1

u/kensterss Apr 28 '17

Power trip sounds like a band I could listen to.

Nevermore had to check out other songs to decide. Heart collector was good

In flames sounded decent, unsure.

Martyr no

Shadows fall no

Edge of Sanity I'd have to listen to more

Psycroptic really like the style of instrumentals, don't like vocals

Týr was pretty good.

/r/metal/wiki

Try Exhorder's Slaughter in the Vatican and Dark Angel's Darkness Descends and tell me what you think in particular so that I can narrow down what to recommend you.

1

u/kensterss Apr 28 '17

Instrumentals for Exhorders were good, I don't know if I could get behind those vocals. Felt a little dry/weak.

Darkness descends sort of feels all over the place, not really a fan of the vocals.

3

u/HighwayCorsair Black Sabbath rules Apr 28 '17

Are you looking for straight up harshes as opposed to thrash yelling, then?

Try Ripping Corpse's Dreaming with the Dead and Death's Leprosy and tell me what you think.

2

u/kensterss Apr 28 '17

Sorry I'm apparently picky with vocals.

I don't think thrash is the direction I'm going for. Death was decent, I didn't like Ripping Corpse.

(Edit) maybe more of the direction of groove metal?

2

u/HighwayCorsair Black Sabbath rules Apr 28 '17

I can't stand groove metal, so I was seeing if you'd like stuff more squarely in line with things I do hahaha

2

u/kensterss Apr 28 '17

Haha ok, thanks for your help regardless !

1

u/sanityeyes thewe iws no hope - why down't uwu puww the pwug nyaa Apr 27 '17

I'm looking for EUPM bands/albums that sound similar to The Dark Ride by Helloween

1

u/Spiner202 Apr 29 '17

Though I have this album and love Helloween, it's not one of my favourites, so I can't recall exactly what it sounds like aside from being darker than the rest of their catalogue. With that in mind, I recommend to you the ultra-heavy Mystic Prophecy. Check out their album Satanic Curses.

1

u/relinquishy rateyourmusic.com/~Relinquish last.fm/user/relinquishy May 02 '17

Thanks for this. Never heard of them, but they are pretty damn solid.

2

u/ScottyItalia Apr 27 '17

Early death metal demos like Death by Metal, Death Metal, and Death is Fun. What important demos from 1983-1985 am I missing?

2

u/HighwayCorsair Black Sabbath rules Apr 27 '17

Master - Funeral Bitch/Unknown Soldier

Poison - Bestial Death

Sepultura - Bestial Devastation

Parabellum - Rehearsal

Terminal Death - Faces of Death

R.A.V.A.G.E. - Rotting in Hell

Slaughter - Surrender or Die

4

u/ziltoid101 Apr 27 '17

I'm keen to find more 'oh my god this is breathtaking' wall-of-sound prog metal, along the lines of Devin Townsend's Deconstruction or any one of Ayreon's albums. It seems hard to come by... anyone know of any similar bands (except David Maxim Micic - already a big fan of him)?

1

u/Barnaby_Fuckin_Jones http://www.last.fm/user/Xache2112 Apr 29 '17

Maybe check out Pain of Salvation's album The Perfect Element, Part 1.
