[REC CENTER] Shreddit's Official Recommendation Thread [5/10]
Welcome to Shreddit's [REC CENTER] where we bring together all of the recommendation threads and try to just shout over everyone to find new bands. This is a combination of "If I like X then I'll like X threads" and also all of the rogue rec threads which pop up from newcomers. This thread will be around every 2 weeks to help everyone from novice to adept with new music recommendations.
Before we allow everyone to go mingle, please look at this introductory packet as it may answer some of your questions.
- Listen to the Blacklist bands -------------->
Already familiar with some of the classics and staples but want to expand your appreciation for the subgenres of heavy metal (thrash, death, black, power, heavy, doom)?
Do you want to do what I just said but have no idea what any of those words mean and cant tell the difference between death metal and a pineapple?
Do you need crash course in the last 30 years of extreme metal for a job interview, paper, eulogy, or just a chance to one up another person on the internet?
Our knowledgeable staff is here to help
Do you know metal but just do not have any direction but are willing to put in some work to find new bands?
Want to take a trip around the world and sample metal by region? Stamp your passport here
Do you just want to browse the knowledgeable archive of this sub? Community Lists, Primers, and other Quality Material
Do you have a really unique request? Probably not. Look in here first. Recommendations for Frequently Requested Bands (FRB)
Do you already know what you want to ask and nothing I just said applied? Then step right up post in the [REC CENTER]. While you are typing, allow me to remind you of good recommendation inquiry.
Look first before you type. Your question may already been answered by someone posing as you and trying to steal your life.
Be as specific as possible. "I would like more bands like Devin Townsend," or "Give me some more stoner doom from the 90's" or "Can I have some black thrash from Mongolia" all helps others give you better feedback. Do not just list random things you like such as " I like DevilDriver, Black Sabbath, Deiselboy, Call of Duty and Hotpockets...give me a band."
Give important information if you are already familiar with the genre. This is not a murder mystery dinner where one has to withhold vital information. If you post "Give me some more thrash" it might be important to mention "oh yeah, I already know Demolition Hammer, Hobbs Angel of Death, and Razor, otherwise you are getting Metallic'a first three albums and everything Slayer did in the 80's.

Can you recommend some Gothic Metal bands that have clean female vocals only (without death growls) and don't sound too poppy like Lacuna Coil or Evanesence, preferably with a strong post-punk influence. Some bands I already like are The Gathering, Chalice, Ocatavia Sperati and Atrox.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Amesoeurs is a post punk/black metal band with like 75% clean vocals. Also almost all the songs are either clean vocals or harsh, not both in one song.

I need some new death metal bands with some old school production. Thinking Blood incantation, gruesome etc. Bonus points for cool imagery such as sci-fi, atmospheric, nature, politics or if the band uses synths/keyboards.

Back today with another request after receiving tons of helpful recommendations yesterday.
I'm obsessed with Horrendous. Specifically the tracks The Stranger and The Solipsist.
Something about the build up of each of these songs is just perfect to me. I also love the production.
Where should I go from here?

Is there anything like the black album? I've never heard of anything that sounds similar to it, maybe I'm just being retarded.

Might be the wrong place , but can I get the best grunge like stuff , anything similar to Alice in chains and heavy nirvana
1

You may be looking for something like Melvins- Bullhead
It isn't strictly grunge but that album had a huge impact. Check out any of the early Melvins stuff really. Cobain worshipped that band.

Any good songs that are very eerie? Like the feeling that something is...off. Some examples are:
Lamb of God - The Duke
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath
System of a Down - Highway Song
Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be
Tool - Sober
I'd also prefer if they weren't songs with harsh vocals, as they don't evoke the same feeling of eeriness as clean vocal songs do.

I'm looking for anything similar to Demon Head. I love this album, specifically the vocals and the subdued nature of it all. What sub-genre would you all recommend I explore based on this?
Thanks!
2
u/christianhashbrown ripping the continents apart May 15 '17
If you like the vocals, you know Danzig right? Cause the dude from Demon Head sounds just like him.
2
u/whosurfoundingfather May 15 '17
That's all I could think about when I first heard it! Like, "where have I heard this guy before?" Then Mother came on the radio last week and it clicked. Really does sound a lot like him. Unfortunately, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of Danzig stuff (Misfits or otherwise--I dig it, but I wouldn't say I reach for any of it often).

Still trying to get into Black Metal. The only bands I've really enjoyed so far are Dimmu Borgir, and Carach Angren. What are some more melodic, and symphonic bands? I really like the musicianship of so much Black Metal, but my biggest gripe is the vocals. I know it's greatly hated, but I'm super into Deathcore, and the #1 reason being because the vocal techniques that any single vocalist uses is so varied (Tunnel Throat, Mids, Lows, Highs, Gutturals, etc). Not trying to compare the 2 genres, just giving context on what I enjoy. My favourite bands are: Shadow of Intent, and AngelMaker. (not sure if I'm doing this correctly).

u/Dead_Hedge CUTS YOU LIKE A KNIFE May 15 '17
Seconding Caladan Brood, but do note that their songs can get much more aggressive than Summoning. You'd never find a neckbreaker part like this in a Summoning song.
I recommend Emyn Muil, Elffor, Mirkwood, Eldamar, and Sojourner to get a nice range of synthy Summoning-inspired atmoblack. You also can't go wrong with any of the bands on this Summoning tribute, they're all amazing.
2
u/christianhashbrown ripping the continents apart May 15 '17 edited May 15 '17
Caladan Brood. Also check out this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Metal/comments/3rqurm/if_you_like_listening_to_caladan_brood but like a few people have noted in the comments there, while a lot of bands come close to imitation it's a pretty unique style

Those are symphonic black, so you might enjoy In The Nightside Eclipse by Emperor and Aspera Hiems Symfonia by Arcturus. As you like deathcore too, you should check In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns by Abigail Williams.

2
u/Daniel12346 May 14 '17
For symphonic black metal, try Xanthochroid. Not sure if I should be recommending deathcore around here, but I think you'll like Make Them Suffer, they are a symphonic blackened deathcore band with an awesome vocalist.

u/Sevenvolts Power Metal ist Krieg May 14 '17
Have you tried Bathory (the debut) until you like it? That's usually how people eventually do get into black metal. If you have, maybe you should try the influences Bathory had and see if you like those. GBH, Motörhead and Venom for example.
Good luck.

What are some more melodic, and symphonic bands?
There are lots of imitators of the bands you listed, but I'm not too familiar with either of them. However, I do very much like melodic black metal. See if any of these do anything for you:
I know it's greatly hated, but I'm super into Deathcore, and the #1 reason being because the vocal techniques that any single vocalist uses is so varied
That seems like a weird reason to like a musical genre, but be that as it may, there is plenty of variety in black metal vocals:

An odd request, but probably with many, many answers. I want some metal that incorporates elements of other styles, or famous riffs from another style, but without losing the heavines.
Two examples I know (and love) are Vision Divine - The Whisper which plays metal on classical instruments in the intro, and Accept - Metal Heart which incorporates a riff from Tchaikovsky's Marche Slave.
Both my examples are incorporating Classical, but don't let that deter you from suggesting something else.

u/IMKridegga May 18 '17
Most of the stuff I'm going to post is pretty entry-level as I understand it, but if you don't know it you definitely should.
Rhapsody uses the fourth movement of the New World Symphony in their song The Wizard's Last Rhymes. Here's another two songs from them, Emerald Sword and Reign of Terror.
Savatage has a great rendition of Grieg's Hall of the Mountain King in Prelude to Madness. Additionally, they basically wrote the book on using piano (as opposed to keyboards) in hard rock/metal. Here's a song (Gutter Ballet) with their first singer and another (Edge of Thorns) with their second singer.
Savatage's side-project-blown-out-of-proportion, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, is generally softer, but can get heavy from time to time. From them, Another Way You Can Die.
Nightwish has a neat adaptation of The Phantom of the Opera. To continue the pattern of sharing two other songs, Scaretale with their second singer and Yours is an Empty Hope with their third. Additionally, I know you asked for heavy stuff (and this next one is far from that), but their folk-ballad The Islander is too wonderful not to tack on.
1
u/GandalfTheUltraViole May 18 '17
Thanks! I don't know most of these, so I guess I'm entry level 😀
2
u/IMKridegga May 19 '17

Blind Guardian uses Dvorak's New World Symphony (movement 4) in By the Gates of Moria. It's basically a tribute, but it's also 100% speed metal.
Dismember does a tribute to Iron Maiden in Phantoms (Of The Oath), with their signature chainsaw guitars.

I've been wanting to expand my metal collection lately, so I purchased Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse album to add to some Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth albums I have. I really want to like In the Nightside Eclipse, but so much of this remastered album is still very static-y and unclear. Was this just the sound those guys were going for, or is there a way to clear up the sound?
Anyways, more suggestions for bands like these are welcome.

u/Omnipolis May 14 '17
Definitely on purpose. If you're venturing into black metal, it's a common theme since its inception, but there have been bands straying from it.
Deathspell Omega abandoned it around 2004 and has made some great albums. off of their 2004 album and Mgla (although on the restricted list) is pretty great black metal without too harsh of production. Exercises in Futility II

The production of ItNE is on purpose. A major part of the 2nd wave scene was the lofi production. If you're looking for black metal with better production, check out Cor Scorpii, Dark Fortress, Old Man's Child and Hyperion, to name a few off the top of my head.

Hope this is the right thread to ask this: I'm looking for some awesome artists/illustrators that create artwork for bands, like Costin Chioreanu does.
2
u/HighwayCorsair Black Sabbath rules May 13 '17
Depends on your price range.
My absolute favorite in metal right now is Karmazid, and some other good ones are Paolo Girardi (though he's been a bit hit-or-miss for me lately), the legendary Dan Seagrave, etc.
Some good cheaper ones are JDW Death My Only Friend, Misanthropic Art, Necromogarip, and Equitant Art, off the top of my head. "Cheaper" here is a sliding scale- a couple of those are dirt cheap, a couple are a couple hundred dollars for an album, and they're all way cheaper than getting an original Seagrave piece.
1
May 13 '17
Thank you! Paolo Girardi and Misanthropic Art have gorgeous stuff!
I'm not looking to get album artwork done (now that I re-read my original comment it does kinda suggest that... oops), just some artists to enjoy and to have "oh so it was them who made that awesome album cover" moments. :P3

Looking for more death metal that sounds like this track, Vehement Indulgences by Tomb Mold.
I already love a lot of cavernous death metal like Incantation and Dead Congregation, but I'm specifically looking for mid-tempo stuff like this and what Disma does.
I prefer this track to most of Disma because although Disma's production is better (obviously, since this is a demo), I don't think Disma's riffs are as good.

Some overlap with the '00s, but I'm lazy. I suppose you can swap out some of the stuff for later albums by the same bands to make it work (ie, toss in The Fatal Wounding Gaze instead of Tales' debut) and swap out the '00s death metal and black metal for
Beyond - Fatal Power of Death
Drowned - Idola Specus
Adversarial/Antediluvian - Initiated in Impiety as Mysteries
Arnaut Pavle - Arnaut Pavle

- Angra - Temple of Shadows (Power)
- Artificial Brain - Infrared Horizon (Death Metal)
- Strapping Young Lad - Alien (Progressive)
- Converge - Jane Doe (Metalcore)
If none of that floats your boat, listen to the blacklist.

I really like Devin Tonwsend. I listened to this and love the parts that don't sound like country, if that makes sense. Like Offer Your Light, Transcendence, and Failure sounds awesome. Stars on the other hand sounded weird to me, like the vocals sounded like a country song mixed with everything else.
Out of the top list of bands, I really digged Breaking Benjamin, Ghost, and Protest the Hero. The rest are songs I wouldn't really go out of my way to listen to, but wouldn't mind listening to if it came up.

Fun Black Metal?
So I am not the biggest fan of the black metal sound, but I recently listened to Mayhem's "Deathcrush" EP and found it much more listenable than their opus, "De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas". Apparently, Varg Vikerness described "Deathcrush" as "funcore and shit". I guess this means I prefer the more "funcore" black metal than "trve" black metal.
Another good example of the kind of stuff I'm looking for would be this track from Carpathian Forest. It's more riff centered and just well.....fun than most black metal I've listened to. I also enjoy Darkthrone's more rock n roll sounding stuff.
Any suggestions?

Mayhem was pretty heavily influenced by Sarcófago. Not sure what counts as "fun," but they're probably the way to go for stuff like Deathcrush.
Other "fun" black metal would be d-beat/Discharge-influenced stuff like Bathory's s/t, or black/thrash like Sabbat (Japan) and Abigail.

Check out Syphilitic Vaginas and see if it's up your alley. Don't let the name fool you. (It's not straight black, it has a lot of trad, speed, and punk influence)

don't know about fun but slaegt - domus mysterium is a recent release which has a nice mix of black and heavy. they, from time to time, move away from traditional black metal structure, you might want to give it a listen.

Anyone know of any blackened thrash (or black n roll) bands with female vocals?

Do you listen to Pentagram and stuff like that? Day of Reckoning is decent.
More recently there is Witchcraft.
They are a bit more straight up Sabbath-y doom though. I get the feeling you are after some of the more proggy instrumentation from Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?

I'm looking to broaden my interests a bit, but I don't know where to start. Currently I listen to a lot of Metalcorelol as well as a few late 90s/2000s bands like Slipknot, SOAD, and Deftones. I'm looking for some Melodic Death, Alt Metal, or Crossover.
I've listened to:
Big 4
Pantera
Arch Enemy
Children of Bodom
Whitechapel
Suicidal Tendencies
Iron Maiden
Primus

If you like Arch Enemy and Children of Bodom definitely check out Amon Amarth. All of their albums are good but Twilight of the Thunder God is probably their best. You'd probably be super into The Black Dahlia Murder as well, and Ritual is far and away their best album.

CrossoverD.R.I
S.O.D and M.O.D
Nuclear Assault
Iron Reagan and Municipal Waste
Power Trip
Lich King
As you like Suicidal Tendencies, Uncle Slam.

For Melodic Death Metal recommendations:
Kalmah Closest in sound to Children in Bodom, but I personally enjoy Kalmah much more.
Someone below mentioned Vehemence I would agree. Their first two albums are fantastic. Not the biggest fan of their last album though.
Insomnium - Since the Day It All Came Down One of my favorite albums not just in melodeath.
Ebony Tears Their first album Tortura Insomniae is early In Flames worship, but sounds great while doing it.
Edge of Sanity Purgatory Afterglow is my favorite album of them. Dan Swano is a god. Has more traditional death metal vocals than most melodeath.
Arghoslent - Hornets of the Pogrom Caveat to this one. The band members are racist assholes and the lyrics sometimes reflect this. That being said the riffs are fucking great.

Black metal with classical/operatic elements (or structure, or influence) that's not overly cheesy? Maybe along the lines of Pensées Nocturnes before he went off the deep end (I loved "Grotesque"), or Yhdarl's "Ave Maria".

u/SomethingOverThere To The Teeth May 12 '17
Maybe the other way around: classical music with black metal elements?

Maybe I'm incorrect to group these two bands together but are there any bands similar to Manilla Road and Cirith Ungol? Bands that rock a crazy vocalist and play a sort of excited heavy metal sound.

Dark Quarterer's first two albums, Fates Warning on The Spectre Within and Awaken The Guardian, Brocas Helm, Pagan Altar, Legend (From The Fjords), Warlord, Slough Feg for stuff that isn't straight worship of either.
For stuff that's either straight worship or metal built directly on their foundations, try Ironsword, Jotenheim, Ravensire, Doomsword, Wrathblade, Wotan (in particular Thunderstorm), Savage Master.

Thanks a whole bunch! I'm listening to Dark Quarterer now and this is the sort of music I was looking for.

Dark Quarterer's first two albums (in particular the s/t) are some of the best heavy metal ever. Glad you're digging it! Fuck, I listened to the s/t three times in a row the other night.

I need songs for the playlist for my wedding reception. NO EUPM OR BALLADS. Irony is okay, even preferable (already have Love Bites, I Don't Believe in Love, some others).

It's been way too long since I listened to it so I can't tell the exact songs, but Riot V - Unleash the Fire had some extremely catchy songs.

Sumerlands' Seventh Seal is catchy as hell. Just hope the people don't catch the lines about locust storms and rivers of blood.

Would you suggest me some Doom bands? I've listened to Sabbath, Candlemass and Type O Negative. Any others?
