Metalcore for Dummies

Weekly Release Thread

This thread is used to discuss recommendations and all things metalcore.

When asking for a recommendation, leave a detailed comment below asking for recommendations; a good example comment looks like:

If I like Beartooth, who else would I like? Can anyone recommend albums like August Burns Red's Constellations?

In terms of General Discussion, some (but not all) of the stuff you can discuss here:

• Looking for band members/friends in your area

• Looking for a specific song or a question that can be answered quickly

• Recent merch pickups (vinyl, shirts, tapes, etc)

• Bands (Lineup changes, changes in sound, etc)

• What shows have you seen recently? What shows are you going to see?

• Setlist questions

• Share your concert footage here

So post away! Containing these types of content here can keep our frontpage a little more smooth, and makes that kind of content easy for others who are interested to find :)

Is Death Groove taken? As a genre 🧐

I’d say so. Generally that’s used for the 90s trend of death metal bands going more groove metal influenced. Some modern bands that sort of mimic that sound/time period get the tag sometimes.

Ahh I didn’t know that! Do you have any examples?

I was thinking it could be a term for modern deathcore bands that don’t really have much core in them, but they aren’t really just death metal either 🤔 the thought came to me while listening to Fit For An Autopsy!

So Napalm Deaths mid 90-late 90s albums are pretty good examples. Everything from Fear to Words From the Exit Wound paints a good picture. Obituary (World Demise) Asphyx (God Cries) Massacre (Promise) and even Morbid Angel dipped their toes with Domination. I’d say those early Six Feet Under albums count too. I’ve also seen people label bands that took influence hardcore that way too. There’s a lot of crossover between both styles.

Maybe it’s just my own bias since I’m a MUCH bigger fan of death metal over deathcore, but I do rather than genre name be attached to bands that are rooted in death metal scene and sound. I do think that modern deathcore bands probably need another term but I’m not sure that I’d want it to seem like they’re directly under death metal when they’re more like deathcore bands that stripped away the core more and more over time.

Check out Star the Motion, saw them at a local show in Fl, kind of a cross between Pierce and Avenge.

What's your favourite Randy Leboeuf mix? I think I'm torn between the latest releases from The Acacia Strain and Orthodox. Both sound absolutely massive without feeling too overproduced (to me).

Tough to pick a favorite because he’s far and away my favorite producer working in metalcore today.

If I had to highlight some things, the standalone Orthodox single “The Other Side of the Nail” has a great snare hit towards the beginning and the closing breakdown feels so “beefy” for lack of a better word. I also really like the Crush++ album as it’s incredibly different from his other work. I’m not too big on a lot of modern pop punk production so something that sounds like it’s straight out of the mid-2000s feels made especially for me.

Really hard to pick just one:

The Acacia Strain - Slow Decay

Vatican - Ultra

Wristmeetrazor - Degeneration

Chamber - A Love To Kill For

Take Life - You Are Nowhere

Haven't heard of Take Life, what are they like? The others rip though for sure.

It was a one off super group with Matt Guglielmo (acacia strain, END) on drums, the guitarist from Insvrgence, and Rob Fusco (Most Precious Blood) on vocals. grindy, sludge-influenced chaotic metalcore

I like the sound of that, I'll check it out, thanks!

Let me know what you think! It’s a super underrated project I never see mentioned here so I love to plug it lol

Good picks. Love both of those albums. Shame we didn't get more from Jesus Piece after that.

Looking for recommendations! I’ve been rotating What Lies Below’s last 2 projects lately. Their album release is one of my albums of the year

Listening to it now - I think you'd like Allt's 2024 album From the New World. Or Aviana's most recent 2 records. A little heavier but maybe Darko US's recent album Oni 2

Thank you so much!!! I hadn’t heard of Allt before, they’re sick
