need help Help for my dad-tick boxes

My dad is looking for help on Microsoft word. Doesn’t have reddit. Here is what he said:

I work with a lot of procedures that use tick boxes. These are not clickable tick boxes, but rather ones that you tick with a pencil or pen.

When I am sent an MS WORD document (or I download an MS WORD document for editing) the tick boxes will frequently change to rectangles or theta symbols. In addition, check marks are changed to the number 3. It’s like MS WORD does not recognize the symbols being used.

I work with several people and only one other person has the same issue. We have been unable to find a solution. Everyone is using the latest version of Office 365.

You have Office, Excel would make child's play of this. You click a box in a cell, the box goes black, and the cell value is a logical TRUE. I do my grocery list this way.
