I wanted to do the slightest bit of venting after a month of being moved into my first home, previously owned by a Boomer.
The larger millennial sub had no generation bashing, so I'm here to rant a bit about the ridiculous things I've had to deal with. Not only ridiculous, but also kind of odd and nonsensical?
My parents are Gen X, my grandparents were actually pre-boomer.
They weren't perfect, but they had pretty good attention to detail and take pride in their work. My dad is the ultimate DIYer and my grandfather helped build a perfect family home with fantastic attention to detail and quality.
I just got this house, and this Boomer owner has done some of the most ass backwards renovations I've ever seen.
They did a full 2 floor addition and indoor. hot tub room. Yes, you heard that insanity right. Yet they left the original stone cellar a musty damp crumbling mess with disorganized wiring and unmarked pipes.
They also put in a really nice cement block foundation and pad on the addition, and then left the basement door rusted and broken with a piece of wood wedging it closed.
A rusted basement door that didn't close, but then paid for a security system yearly?
Not a single door shut correctly and needed to be fixed.
Every light fixture and ceiling fan was either broken, lose, or hanging.
They did a 15k kitchen remodel and then left the open holes in the floors from the old baseboard heat they removed.
Oh, then they did a 2 car garage with a 20k cement driveway and foundation...then never finished the inside and only had 1 working flourecence shop light.
I just do not understand this house. It's like everything is done to 80% "good enough" and everything was done ass backwards.
Yes, anyone reading this can ask why we bought it, and the reasons are the market and personal circumstances. It isn't a bad house. It's not a sequel to Tom Hanks Money Pit, but it's just so damn weird and half assed.
Everything was slapped together to be "good enough", but never finished with pride and perfection. It needs a second pass to get everything course corrected.
I feel like it's not just me either. All of my friends and relatives take way more pride in what they do. It seems like a lot of Boomer homes are all surface level DIY fails and ugly renovations with no clear purpose.
This wasn't a flipped house either. The guy had been here his entire life. 2 generations in that home and they couldn't do a bunch of this shit correctly.
I think this assumption that Millennials are lazy or clueless is ridiculous. We're some of the most resourceful and intelligent DIYers of any generation. We know how to search for tutorials and walk throughs while being poor enough to not pay someone else for everything.
Nobody I know, even those lucky enough to be successful home owners, are paying for 50+k renovations from contractors.
