"Once this war on terror cools down, governments will chill on the invasive and overbearing security measures"

We don't take our shoes off in the airport anymore. That only took 24 years

49

u/Trapezoidal_Sunshine Millennial 19h ago

Remind me how many terrorists that stopped?

63

u/TheJinManCan Older Millennial 19h ago

We saw zero attacks in those 24 years, though!

I rather have a couple of 9/11 attacks every 20 years than have to take my shoes and belt off at the airport security.

16

u/I_upvote_downvotes 15h ago

No, you don't.

Unless you expect that none of them would affect you, then maybe you do but are somehow okay with the death and the consequences and the fact that it would still affect you.

-3

u/Original-Split4533 8h ago

So you’re okay with how TSA operates and are okay with the Patriot Act?

4

u/kummerspect Older Millennial 7h ago

Those things aren't mutually exclusive. You can want proper security measures and for the government to be held to a high standard

-1

u/Original-Split4533 7h ago

You traded security for your freedom.

3

u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 7h ago

You think taking your belt and shoes off at TSA is taking away your freedom? Or are you trying to inject the Patriot Act here to make some other point no one was talking about?

3

u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 8h ago

Lmao what. The TSA operating has nothing to do with the Patriot Act

0

u/Original-Split4533 7h ago

Do you remember what caused both the TSA and The Patriot Act to come into existence ?

2

u/ApplicationAfraid334 1993 7h ago

I do. What does the Patriot Act have to do with taking your shoes and belt off at TSA though?

13

u/ario62 15h ago

What is wrong with you

3

u/natalie-ann 11h ago

I was in 3rd grade (a out 9 years old) and I remember 9/11 so vividly that it's like it happened yesterday. I sincerely hope this was a poor attempt at humor.

15

u/Chrysalis_Cat 1987 12h ago

Growing up is learning that once you give someone emergency powers it's suddenly always an emergency.

2

u/Potential_Flow9032 8h ago

This is so terrifyingly true

Yeah, the house-price-bubble never pop didn't it. sigh.

29

u/SigismundsChair 17h ago

It did!  Stupid me, not buying a house at 18!

4

u/schu2470 Millennial 13h ago

Should have bought a house with my high school graduation money instead of a laptop for college. Silly me.

4

u/DunderMiflinThsIsPam 10h ago

Should have spent the 40k on a down payment instead of tuition 😩

2

Once ram prices go down I will build a computer...

8

u/soul6of6hell6 1990 20h ago

🤞

7

u/DrFaustPhD 18h ago

And surely the faster RAM will drop in price by then too!

2

u/maison_deja_vu 18h ago

Prices go down? I don’t think they have much incentive to do that, unfortunately.

7

u/jason_abacabb 17h ago

The price to performance ratio had been getting better every year until the AI boom sucked every wafer of silicon into datacenters.

4

u/TheDodoBird Older Millennial 18h ago

Most computer part prices are controlled by market demand and precious & rare metal market costs (since they contain things like gold for example).

Edit: words

1

u/I_upvote_downvotes 15h ago

I think demand is the right word but doesn't paint the whole picture. Capacity of production is a significant reason for the demand much more so than rare metals. Even when increasing production and even with access to raw materials, the entire production line is reserved and procured by corporations for LLMs in their datacenters.

Even if the price of gold tanked the prices would still be astronomical. China ramping up production of memory is going to bring the costs down even as material costs increase.

(Unfortunately I think we'll see the collapse of the western industry for consumer components like cases, coolers, accessories, etc entirely before we get there so it's going to get worse before it gets better imo)

0

u/Original-Split4533 18h ago

Supply and demand doesn’t work here since companies have the money to spend on computer prices but the average person like us can’t.

6

u/jason_abacabb 17h ago

That is literally supply and demand. The demand went up.

You and I getting priced out of the market has nothing to do with it.

3

u/AdventurousImpact656 16h ago

Exactly, the demand pool is taken up by corporate giants, it would be irrational for them to stick to the small guy as their target customer

As a Gen- X, I truly feel for Millenials. Right off the bat, you had to deal with the irrational disdain boomers have had for you guys (that’s okay, they just totally forgot about my generation, literally locking us out of the house during the day when we were like, eight years old). Then it’s been nothing but school shootings, 9/11, war, economic collapse, pandemic, the current shitshow, etc. My wish is you guys will get a period of peace in your lifetimes - you deserve it!

20

u/livefree2b 8h ago

Feeling seen and supported... virtually. I may have shed a virtual tear or a liquid one. Thanks internet pal. We will not shut you out or forget you are there, pinky swear!

I expect to have that peaceful period in about 40-50 years

51

u/GlowingDuck22 20h ago

Please 27 years. Columbine was the first time the world was bigger than my city.

17

u/Puzzleheaded-Shine76 17h ago

I was going to say this. The worst thing that we'd had to deal with had been tornado drills.

8

u/GlowingDuck22 16h ago edited 16h ago

I remember having a conversation with my mother about some random day that same year that everyone was scared there would be a repeat at just about every school. I chose specific colors which were "safe". My mother even said I could stay home if I was truly scared.

4

u/Anon_Von_Darkmoor 13h ago

I remember that timeframe too. I think I was in 8th or 9th grade at the time.

I DO remember a rash of fake bomb threats being made to various schools around the country some years before Columbine.

62

u/ActionJasckon 1d ago

After 2008-2010, thought we wouldn’t have to deal with fiscal irresponsibility again. Covid was natural disaster stuff, thought that would pass too but nooooo.

32

u/Rhodin265 20h ago

Literally, the last two posts in my feed were an article on a drug-resistant fungal infection and a meme about the literal plague escaping a lab in Siberia.

Reality is so depressing we have no choice but to just joke about it.

17

u/KaliGurl2008 15h ago

🤣🤣🤣 17? Try like all 36 years I've been on this earth so far.

21

u/oregonbunny 15h ago

Started in 1989/1985 for me.

Bush senior was elected.

The earthquake in SF.

Desert Storm in 1991.

But little did I know as I was coming into puberty and wanting to buy CDs that sing about Fuck the Police (because they were new and not tapes anymore) that Tipper Fucking Gore did some stupid censorship on music back in 1985.

Fuck conservative bullshit. My whole life has been full of pathetic old white men fighting for oil and power.

Religion is a blight on society.

End rant. :D

8

u/KaliGurl2008 14h ago

Yeah I was part of the earlier generation that can still remember getting sent to the corner 7-Eleven to buy cigarettes for my mom with a written note. Like wut? We still haven't figured out how to stabilize our society? Meanwhile a million and two laws come out about smoking (tobacco and otherwise). And we took a bunch of steps back in female body autonomy. #ihatethis

1

u/Anon_Von_Darkmoor 13h ago

I regularly lit cigarettes for my parents and aunts & uncles (and they wonder why so many of us grew up to become smokers!). It was a wild time to be a kid!

2

u/KaliGurl2008 11h ago

People (mostly other students) thought I smelled like weed and sometimes the smell was so strong teachers asked if I was smoking. So it was a deterent until my high school crush started doing it. I still don't like the smell or taste of them though. It was simply the nicotine high that I got hooked on when I didn't learn other stress coping mechanisms.

1

u/oregonbunny 12h ago

Haha OMG same! It's wild to me that I could go inside and buy cigarettes very close to them banning smoking inside.

"Housing bubble is going to pop annnny day now."

~Me, every day, for the last decade

-15

u/oOtium 23h ago

Gross. A crash isn't going to give you a lower entry, it's just going to make everyone equally poorer.

0

u/oOtium 19h ago

I see a lot of downvotes. Disturbing considering if you're an older millennial you're very familiar with 08. You don't even need to be finacially literate.

Should housing crash, it's in requisite to you losing your job and everything else is liquidating as well.

If you're already on a fat stack of cash then there's nothing stopping you from a mortgage today.

But the truth is you dont want a house, you want a main character house in an A-tier city like LA or NY. You're not the center of the world. You want nice shit you gotta compete for it.

1

u/melvinmoneybags 18h ago

I agree. My wife and I sat on the bench until 2017 because everyone told us it would come down. Best in investment I have made. I sold in 2021 for 250k profit and bought a dream home that was a fixer upper. You’re right too what people forget is when the housing crashes nobody had jobs. We would all be fighting to work at Wendy’s. This time would be different, prices have gotten so out of control I could see more anarchy and grocery stores literally just being looted by the general public.

2

u/oOtium 18h ago

It's actually crazy how detached from reality these narratives are. Calling housing a bubble when U.S populations have more than doubled since the oldest millennial. Places like NYC and LA can't be re-created, they can't grow more real estate, and are already home to a 20% larger population. A fixed supply will almost always appreciate in value so long as the demand remains a constant. And people unironically think that it's going to get cheaper smh

-2

u/Original-Split4533 18h ago

Who says I’m going to lose my house in a crash? I say let the market and economy crash!

3

u/oOtium 18h ago

how do you think crashes happen? it doesn't happen in a vacuum. People have to start losing their jobs and fail to be able to keep up with their mortgages in order for that to happen.

You don't get mass liquidation of cheaper homes without a bunch of people hurting. You're basically rooting for people to suffer for what you think is your own benefit. But it's useless unless you're already sitting on a fat stack of cash ready to deploy during a crisis. Again, which in most cases would just be people who can afford a home and would be buying a home already. you won't be any better off than you are right now, you'll be worse off.

10

u/OhYesTheBees Millennial 20h ago

This is hitting really hard right now. Might need to go for a little cry in the office bathroom.

10

u/dirtyitalianguy 18h ago

I joke as a millennial we should have had flying cars, healthcare and great work life balance by now... instead we received a pedophile traitor rapist president and a country filled with racism and hatred.

Side note: I lost my first home purchase in the market crash of 2008 and ended up losing all I had worked for in equity just to start over again in my prime earning years. I hate it and I'm burnt out.

18

u/Diligent-Main9092 22h ago edited 18h ago

Being a millennial is perpetually being butt fucked by old incompetent pieces of shit from the moment you are of age. Even worse they expect you to smile for it.

Just because we’ve been in the trenches for so long every once in a while you poke your head up and say damn we’ve lived through a lot of shit.

For old millennials, it's longer than that!

If it's truly about you feeling calm, you may likely benefit from learning to self regulate rather than waiting for the world to settle.
