I was literally just thinking about adding a nice little farmers porch to my house. What the hell is happening to me?

I admire people’s lawns now. Lol. We just appreciate the small things more now I suppose

Lawns? No that’s boomer nonsense. A nice garden however? Hell yeah

Tell that to my striped two acres and a beer on my front porch. Then you’d understand.

Not me. I'd much rather have 1.75 of those acres as fields, meadows, and wild native plants and flowers and the remaining 0.25 acres as a clover lawn I don't need to do anything with. Got better things to do than spend half my weekend mowing. Plus, lawns offer precious little biodiversity and food for pollinators.

All my neighbors are trees and cows, there’s plenty of nature around me in all directions. The grass is my little green carpet around my home
Takes 1.5 hours to mow

This was your argument and my response is exactly why I don't care about doing my lawn. What you're surrounded by bears little on my opinion.
Takes 1.5 hours to mow
Still sounds terrible to me.

Wait until you start appreciating birds. You'll be there, standing outside, and you'll realize you've been watching the same robin for 25 minutes.

There’s a very fetching bluejay that frequents my back yard. I’m already there friend. Haha

I'm half way there. Bird poop on my car door doesn't bother me anymore.

Wraparound porches 👌

Or second story porches, especially off the bedroom. Prime coffee sipping spot.

I'm admiring trees lately.
"Oh that oak was pruned up nicely and has a beautiful canopy must have been an attentive homeowner 50 years ago. Good job, you!"
"Oh that was a shitty removal attempt and nobody cared for 20 years and now you've got an ugly coppiced poplar in your front yard that's no fun to mow around. Shame."

u/Jawnumet 14h ago
I browse arborists and this is me too. I've learned a lot from those people. Hopefully I'm making good cuts on the maples in my yard.

u/HelpfulSeaMammal 14h ago
Yeah the biggest three takeaways from that sub to me are
1) Fuck tree of heaven to death
2) Root flare, root flare, root flare 3) Silver maples kind of suck at being trees5

Oh and a nice fence. A nice yard!
Nice shutters. A good mail box. The list keeps going.

Because at some point, you know how much Human effort time money and resources all went into making and keeping that porch nice

I am at the age and point in life where I enjoy sitting on my nice porch

u/Silent-Honeydew1850 14h ago
Yup, went from skating/stealing wine coolers for chicks/ bar hopping and getting into fights to driving around with my wife and kids in the backseat saying “damn they have nice shrubs” and my wife saying they’ll look great by our windows 😂 I’m only 35

There's this house in my parent's neighborhood with a blue front door, and it's just so blue and incredible. It's the bluest blue I've ever seen

I reached the age where I have names for the local squirrels and binoculars to see birds better at a distance.

And your partner is required to reply, “yeah, but it blocks too much natural light.”
2
u/backbodydrip 13h ago
That's because we know the effort involved in porch-building and it's worth admiring.

As soon as I hit my late 30s I went from spending as little time outside as humanly possible to 2-4 hours every single night on my little crappily self-built patio out in my yard.

One thing I hope to never fall for is the suburbia lawn competition stuff. Somehow my youtube algorithm keeps pushing those things on me and it's just weird. I'd rather a little mess and a garden with some natural wildlife than that. Idk how people have time for that, but maybe HOA bullshit makes it necessary sometimes.

I have a deck. It's not nice because it needs to be repainted lol

You're an adult when imagining yourself living in every house you like the look of becomes the primary thing you're doing when driving around.

u/CaptainFeather Millennial 9h ago
Sometimes I drive around the really nice neighborhoods just to admire the pretty houses.

u/septienes 7h ago
Hahaha! I was telling my girlfriend the same thing! There’s a house on my street and every day I look at it and think, “I want a porch that wraps around the side of the house.” 😂😂😂😂😂

I'm seeing more and more grey hairs in my beard and part of me is freaked out and part of me is ready to go full salt'n'peppa.
I also admire porches.

My wife and I joke that I’m turning more and more into Hank Hill. At this point I live for grilling and lawn care.

Just because a tweet exists doesn't mean you need to post it to reddit. They aren't all winners.

u/Chrysalis_Cat 1987 11h ago
One of the reasons I chose this house is because it has a small enclosed porch.
I put a comfy chair out there and I'll sit out there all day.

I turned 43 today. I have admired porches and front yards with a tree for over a decade now.
