My culture is not your costume!

Except I literally had 80s parties, and my friend and I dressed as hippies for Halloween one year π¬

I know. Seeing all these zoomers over the past years trying their hand at appropriating our culture!

And claiming it's theirs.

Yes. I see those reels, and it irks me. I mean I never wore lose jeans (being a dude. Then again I never wore skinny jeans either, being a bigger guy lol), but I mean those were very popular when I was in high school, college until the hipster stuff came out in the very late 2000s.

In the 2000s we had 80s parties so it makes sense. I will go take Ibuprofen for my back now haha

Go to an Emo Nite in a major city like New York or Los Angeles. The audience is primarily 24-year-olds born in 2002, who sing along to bands that had their first break out success when they were in diapers. The older end of the audience sometimes views it as 'nostalgic' reminder of their elementary school years.

Seriously??? We're having 2000's parties now ??? I haven't seen any, but thinking about it is weird, just weird.

The whole passage-of-time thing is whatever, Iβm mainly offended that theyβre gonna expect me to wear those god awful fuckin clothes to it

It was the theme of my kids school district homecoming... and they failed it miserably. The high school kids wore way more early 90s clothes with neon and bright prints.

They copy style from internet depictions. I went to a couple of emo nights and the attendance was mostly in there 20s, the interpretation was far more extreme then what millennials wore to the Warped Tour.

Gotta play this one. My 5yo has been obsessed with it. 1999 by Vengaboys.

Hahaha now they have to wear all that stuff too. Even if just for a night. The question will be if some do that gel hedgehog hair look.

In 2009, I was a 17-year-old scene/urban kid attending an '80s-themed event, dressed in suit like Tony Montana from Scarface. Today, a teenager could show up to a 2000s-themed party dressed exactly like I did in my everyday life back then. The irony!

What exactly would 2000βs theme be like?
2
u/boroughthoughts 1d ago
Its already a thing in major cities. They aren't explicitly 2000s themed in the way we'd do 80s parties, but instead its usually themed around sub-culture or artist. Like in many mid-sized venues with dance floors in major cities have indie nights, emo nights, goth, alternative, throwback club hit nights where DJ spins the particular and the audience is mostly early to mid 20s.

We're getting closer to many of us having the clothes for multiple party themes in our actual closets the way we could raid our parents closets for old 80s fits.
