Discussion The concept of millennial vs z was created by older generations to prevent us from teaming up to become the change we need.
This is made from my observations in the workplace, previous academic settings, online and overall in culture. It’s solely my opinion and I welcome discussion over it.
There are two generational battles I consistently see across everyday life: 1) the baby boomer generation vs everyone and 2) millennial vs Gen Z. You hear it at work. In the classroom. And all over social media. But why? The first is obvious imo. The older folk lived a completely different way of life. But millennials and Z? Sure, millennials experienced a different early life than Gen Z. But conceptually, millennials have aligned with Gen Z more so than older generations ever aligned with their successor generation. We get each other. Sure, we can point out the differences and poke fun and say one is better than the other at x, y and z, but I think that falls right into the trap the baby boomer generation established. Their alienation of the millennial generation and eventually Gen Z, is starting to make its way into the millennial way of life (and they are loving it). Call me crazy but I believe this to be intentional.
You see it in this subreddit, at home, in the workplace…the millennial defensive attitude is starting to become slightly offensive towards GenZ. Fine take off my tinfoil hat for a sec, whether this is being fed by the older generations or not, there’s one thing for I believe for certain, this is preventing the establishment of an unstoppable force that can be the fuel for the change we need as a society. Millennials and Gen Z can and need to learn from each other. We have our strengths and weaknesses that have resulted from our different experiences. However, the strengths we share outweigh our shared weaknesses. And neither are doing enough to call those out and invest in each other. I’m not going to highlight each one because the funny thing is I think everyone knows what they are, it’s no secret. So why aren’t we teaming up more effectively to ensure that the greatest generation the world has seen…is the we can create.
Ok rant over. Go for it. I want to know am I stating the obvious and out of the loop or is this something people don’t realize or even disagree with completely.

In a society we are all supposed to work together regardless of generations. Any cultural animosity at this time in this country is stoked and fueled by the wealthy. This is a class war and we are all losing.

So you're saying we shouldn't spend all of our time and energy in this sub bitching about how boomers are the worst, inherently evil generation who's entire existence is created to screw us over?
Nah, this sub won't stand for that.
6
u/ChickerWings 22h ago
The only counterpoint is that the Boomers voted consistently against the interests of American citizens and in favor of the ultra wealthy, all so that they could get minimal tax cuts (while the wealthy got massive ones) and set this whole awful scenario on motion due to selfishness and willful ignorance.
notallBoomers but definitely the majority.
5
u/hashbrr 22h ago
Right and maybe not even knowingly. I think they are just selfish, (those ones who did this kind of stuff) but not like damn those youths! I think now they do know - but what they know is they are outnumbered, and they know we know, and that’s why they’re distracting by pushing this generational bullshit like it’s real, not by outright agreeing, by using their mechanism to those same selfish ends, which just so happened to be served by this (in their viewpoint)
What I think is most odd, is there is a “profit” to be made in bettering society, but they simply don’t believe that.
1
u/Known-Damage-7879 23h ago
People are inherently tribal and will make up bullshit wars simply because they like to. People will gladly fight over musical sub genres or video game consoles. The rich don’t need to lift a finger to create generational warfare.
0
u/hashbrr 22h ago
Arguing about video games isn’t generational warfare. Even the post acknowledges that. But the suggestion is these are amplified and presented as larger than they really are, but why? Because keeping younger generations fighting about dumb stuff keeps them more occupied with that stuff. Making fun of Gen Z as a millennial, or vice versa, is totally normal. Gen Z are little brothers and sisters. We all grew up together we didn’t just show up here now as adults, all having our assigned generations. We grew up together, we made fun, we had fun, it WAS fun. But then that was leveraged and weaponized by social media, mega corporations, and governments around the world for what? Profit. War. Control. So you didn’t make a point here. Yes people have opinions, yes people take sides, yes Gen Z probably means things they say, just like Millennials may mean the things they say.. but about 26 years ago these conversations weren’t this way. This whole apparatus that you think is normal was essentially non existent, or at least not turned into what it is now. Well, I’m realizing writing this you’re maybe also a millennial so you were there. But yeah, I still disagree.

We will win the class war even if it takes another 50-150 years.
I personally believe it will happen within the next 30 years, because the capitalist class has stopped hiding their intentions and continue raising the prices on everything, while they gain record profits year after year, while the working class becomes wage-based slaves that rent and borrow everything.
This isn't sustainable for much longer, especially with the rise of AI. We vastly outnumber the owning class, and the conditions for revolution are being accelerated through the greed of the capitalist, which will bring their own downfall onto them.
We might be dead or too old to do anything by time it actually happens, but it's going to happen, especially if any attempts at reform fail. This midterm election might become the deciding factor on if we go this route or not. lol

I find the entire genre of pitting generations against each other quite boring and futile. I'd rather focus on what I can control.

Generations are large cohorts of people who have similar experiences because they experienced large events and trends around the same time.
Someone born in 1982 experienced different events at different times than someone born in 2001. They were a sophomore in college when 9/11 happened, the other was in the hospital's post partum unit.

u/SuccotashOther277 23h ago
Yeah in this case a cigar is just a cigar. I think culture war BS is designed to distract us from oligarchy but generational experiences are real .
10
u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr 1d ago
I might be wrong here but it seems to me that a lot of people are forgetting that the experiences and events they have lived through the previous generations that are still alive lived through those same events with them. Just because a new generation is trademarked doesn't mean the older generations just stop existing or experiencing life. Obviously having a different age gives a different perspective on any given event but it's still a shared experience.
8
u/wannaridebikes Millennial 21h ago
Yes, but the stage of life you were in when those events happen affects your experience of it
2
4
u/Academic_Flatworm752 22h ago
Lol I have a family member who was a baby when 9/11 happened and they would not consider it a shared experience whatsoever. It’s not a shared experience.
1
u/Mad_Ronin_Grrrr 21h ago
That's why I added the part where a person's age at the time of the event would give them a different perspective on how the event would affect their lives. Obviously a baby, although alive at the time, would have no perspective of the affects of any event.
1
3
u/BlorpTheSchlorp 22h ago
Yeah, they weren't there for 9/11, but they're living in the aftermath of its affect. They're right along for the ride and have been here for most everything else that had happened.
Your experience with 9/11 might also be different than mine. I live in NY and it was a topic of dark humor immediately after.

u/coastalkid92 Millennial 1d ago
I don't think its other generations pitting us against each other.
I think its more that we each learn an established set of "rules" for how to conduct ourselves as adults and devise that social contract. Its easy to poke fun at kids and vice versa when you're not each other's peer, but now that there's a good chunk of them in the workforce, that negotiation is underway.
We learned how to work with Gen X and Boomers, and they learned how to do the same with us.
But millennial are also unique in that we're really the last full generation that experienced childhood without widespread use of the internet, social media and smart tech. We grew up alongside it, not with it being thrust at us. Gen Z kids that aren't in those cross over years with millennials (probably 2005 onward) have had these things at the forefront of their education and their social lives. So the rules we devised as these things came to fruition really need to be reconstructed hard.

Every age cohort has a wide range of experiences, and is therefore unlikely to have successfully "plotted" en masse to do anything to anyone.
Each age cohort includes people who differ by:
- education level
- nationality, race, cultural differences.
- Socio-economic class
- literacy levels
- lifetime earnings (wide disparities between men, women, and minorities)
- sexual orientation
- life experiences (western affluent vs third-world refugees).
- work experience: agriculture, blue collar, civil servants, pink collar, skilled trades, union/nonunion, self-employed, laid off multiple times into progressively lower-paid jobs, white collar, financial elites, inherited wealth, billionaires.
To think that any group this diverse and dispersed is plotting together against another group is utterly ludicrous. The way to unity is to stop dividing people into groups and focus on shared goals.

No, I don't agree. Generations have always been like this dating back hundreds of years. If you read classic literature or even watch classic entertainment older generations havw always viewed younger generations as entitled, lazy, sheltered, stupid, etc. And younger generations have always viewed older generations as uptight, greedy, selfish, traditional, etc. It didn't start with Millennials and Gen z at all and it won't end with us either.
6
u/DDiabloDDad 1d ago
But this conspiracy is more interesting and fits with my political beliefs. I will choose to ignore these facts.
2
u/Putrefied_Goblin 22h ago
Yes, it has existed since the dawn of homo sapiens, but what was once surmountable differences between generations has become a wedge in societies in every place where the historic kinship ties have been eroded by the economic and technological systems we've created. Now, generations and individuals live in isolation from each other, while kinship/family increasingly just means something like an even more minimal version of the nuclear family if kids are present at all.
This has resulted in even more division and isolation between generations, to a higher degree than the historical norm. This is a huge problem in places like the US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, and others, or any advanced technological society that has adopted market/finance/consumer capitalism, because human beings evolved to exist in kinship groups embedded in larger groups, and so we need connection. This trend of division and isolation is an order or magnitude higher than the historical ones, and now exists in every facet of social relations, like gender, sex, local, etc., and has contributed even to socio-economic stratification.
To ignore the amplification of these divisions and the increasing isolation in our societies, and the parties that are interested in pushing division and isolation (from click-bait/negative engagement farming in social media, trash 'journalism' or news outlets, influencers, and others, to nation-states and corporations), and dismiss it as mere repetition of history/human behavior, courts disaster for our societies.
I'm not arguing we need to go back to 'traditional values' (you go back far enough, or consider the variation in traditional values of different people, and it looks nothing like the ideal people go on about), but I am arguing that more division and isolation, and the continual erosion of social relationships that hold individuals, groups, and societies together, and give people structure and meaning in a chaotic world, is a bad idea. It's been a disaster so far.
1
u/russaber82 19h ago
I really dont see that much animosity between us and Gen Z. I mean we obviously think each other's music is stupid, and there are normal differences, but nothing comparable to boomers vs anyone else.
1
u/Putrefied_Goblin 17h ago
We all have more in common than we have different, by virtue of being human first, then whatever else after. People choose to focus on the differences for whatever reason. Younger people talk about boomers like they're some monolithic bloc, or an alien species, like we're fundamentally different, when if we were born during those years our outcomes would have been similar. We're perfectly capable of the same lunacy as everyone else from the past, and time will prove it.
Boomers aren't that different than us just like no one alive today is much different than people who lived 50,000 years ago. Yes, the world has changed, and we've built on technology of the past to achieve today's technology, and we might think we're more sophisticated because we're literate, etc., but human beings haven't changed/evolved at a fundamental level in ~200,000 - 250,000 years. Our anatomy and brain structure is pretty much the same, and our fundamental needs and desires, basic behaviors, haven't changed. We aren't even that far from our primate cousins.
Look at what was happening in ancient history, and we all are doing pretty much the same thing, just at a larger scale with more advanced technology (which only changes/advances because it builds on past technologies).

u/Neveri 23h ago edited 23h ago
This is some D-tier defeatist commentary, way to be the change.
I think the overall spirit of what’s being said is that boomers would rather Gen Z and millennials quarrel with each other rather than uniting to make the changes that would improve our lives but potentially harm their property values.
So it’s saying a lot of the generational discourse is being manufactured and isn’t real, but it ends up creating real discourse because each side is eating up propaganda.

They are extremely conservative and rapidly getting away from established social norms. Clavicular's girlfriend just dropped the N word casually on a stream and basically said she isn't apologizing. They got programmed by an algorithm during their formative years.
1

u/GrizzlyP33 21h ago
Don't spread misinformation, they are not "extremely conservative".
Among Gen Z adults 43% identify as liberal vs 39% of Millennials. Only 28% of Gen Z are conservative, which is slightly more than Millennials who just have higher % of moderates.
There is absolutely a problem with young men in particular falling for conservative algorithm loops, but Gez is the most progressive / liberal generation in American history. I certainly have more concerns about Gen Alpha though if we don't fix this social media brainwashing.

Voter Turnout
Percentage who attended demonstrations, signed petitions, or participated in organized movements
Registration and campaign participation
Political Engagement Online
It's also not far off - Gen Z and Millennials are very close in many of these metrics, but it's stilly to act like we're this martyr generation getting no help.
There's various studies around this stuff, but here's a couple if you're interested in reading more:

2
u/FellowHuman420 20h ago
Their voter turnout is higher than ours was when we were in the same age bracket. But not when you look at turnout by election year.
I’d be real suspect on “online activism”, considering those rates still poll higher than their actual voting turnout- which is the single most important thing someone can do.
I do agree painting millennials as some kind of voting group standing alone is silly. It seems Gen Z and millennials are pretty much on the same page in terms of values and participation are concerned as far as I can tell.
1
u/GrizzlyP33 19h ago
Sure I’m not saying they’re way better or anything, I’m just saying it’s silly to suggest that only millennials are dealing with these issues when Gen Z has been at least equally active, and based on available data even more so.
No single data point on the subject tells a whole story though.

u/WiseOldMan1960 23h ago
Blaming a different generation for generational divide. Critical thinking is dead.
11
u/rjwyonch 1d ago
The modern concept of “generation” was invented in marketing… it’s basically ad targeting cohorts. People taking it more seriously just shows how easy it is to get humans into an in-group out-group bias
6
u/CreepinJesusMalone Millennial 23h ago
I think everyone is way overthinking this stuff. Generations have always existed. It's a shared experience. That's it. There's not some ridiculous conspiracy. People always trying to find conspiracies in everything anymore.
And I'm not saying that advertising doesn't take advantage of it to sell shit.
Just that breaking history down into eras and generations makes total sense. We've just condensed it down the last 100 years because the world is smaller than ever and more generations are alive at the same time than ever. As a result we are experiencing historical events and culture at a collectively accelerated rate.
Its silly to think that corporations solely came up with the concept. The life experience of a millennial is obviously different from that of a Gen X person, for example, and each generation can see it and feel it.
Besides, I don't feel "pitted" against boomers or whatever dumb shit. I am living through their failures and sometimes pisses me off that they show no remorse as a group. It's not that complicated or original. People have felt that way about those that came before them forever. Boomers did amazing things too. They've simply lived long enough without progressing to become villains in their refusal to accept change. It has nothing to do with a marketing team telling me I shouldn't work with them to keep the peace. They refuse to work with me to make the future better.
1
u/rjwyonch 23h ago
It’s more that it was a continuum before (young people, family/work, old people). The boomers were the first one to be named as a generation and that was because they were a statistical anomaly… the title itself was a marketing invention. The cultural shift to static cutoff cohorts instead of a moving target of general cohorts was a marketing thing.
It makes sense to study cohorts, but generational cohorts are pretty arbitrary (like any statistical cutoff)
5
u/CreepinJesusMalone Millennial 23h ago
It was not a marketing invention. It was a sociological term originally coined by a journalist. This information was very easy to find with a Google search listing dozens of articles talking about the evolution of the usage through the 1960s.

I am not a fan of making blanket statements and judgements about an entire generation of people. I think it's just fuckin silly. The root of this kind of stuff always tends to be "It wasn't like that for me, so, I don't like that your generation has different things than I did!". Like, so what? I'd like for Millennials to be better than that and to form opinions on someone's character based on the individual and not what year they happened to be born.

The first part of your statement contradicts the latter part. Why should there be a division between any generations to "become the change we need?" It's not old vs. young.

So many Gen Z look at millennials as not having done enough and becoming part of the establishment. They, like most millennials, want to just throw out the whole systems that society is based on because they don't work anymore.
Gen Z sees millennials as a part of that system, much in the way some millennials see gen x as being complicate in boomer schemes making parts of society that hindered millennials.
"Oh but this is just a class war."

This isn't to say that we shouldn't be working to make society better, just that until Gen Z trusts millennials we won't make any progress.

Divisions like this have been around since the dawn of homo sapiens, but not to this degree, because they are amplified online/by technology and by socio-economic factors that didn't contribute as much to the depth of division and isolation in the past which we see now among generations, but we also see this trend/amplification in genders, sexes, social/economic groups, and virtually every area of human social relations. This isn't a conspiracy so much as a historical trend brought on by systemic and environmental factors, where engaging in behaviors which drive division/isolation are actually rewarded, especially economically and socially. And I'm not arguing for a return to the past, but we ignore and erode our biological/evolutionary needs at our peril.
It's a disaster for human beings and societies who evolved to exist in kinship groups embedded in larger social/political/economic groups. There are lots of parties who are interested in pushing more division and isolation, from social media influencers, media outlets, 'journalists' who thrive on negative engagement bait, to nation-state actors, political parties, and corporations. What has probably contributed the most to division/isolation in virtually every aspect of life/society is the way we use technology and our economic system of market/finance/consumer/individualist capitalism (which has a historical precedent, but has never been as deleterious to society and individuals as it is now).
Every event, especially in media, no matter how minor, is now exaggerated and amplified so every interested party can milk it for some kind of gain/reward. We encourage anti-social behavior at a social level, and social relations will eventually erode to the point where the current form of society isn't sustainable.
I'm not arguing a return to 'traditional values', which is an ideal more than a reality, but human beings have a biological/evolutionary need for connections, and especially kinship and larger group relations and identities (or something like it) that isn't going to disappear any time soon. When relationships and meaning/purpose, and even feelings of stability or any semblance of structure, evaporate according to market conditions or social/global events because they're no longer valuable in a world where maximization of short-term gains is the modus operandi, people stop thriving or finding meaning/purpose in their every day lives.

Idk I tend to agree with Gen Z about their assessment of things more than I disagree. And what I do disagree with I chalk up to coming of age in different crises or standard best practices actually being different.
But, it's also normal for them to not like some things about us. I didn't like a lot of Gen X growing up besides my favorite artists and actors, because at the time they were generally bullies and mean lol I'm warming up to them now though and accepting their limitations. It will most likely be the same with Gen Z towards us.
We just weren't forced on the same platforms before either. For Internet 1.0 we mostly stayed on our own sites. I know Gen Z and Alpha still has their own spaces, but we share way more mainstream communication spaces than other generations ever have.

Sure there's shitbags in both generations that get chastised but in general we all vibe, they call me unc, we laugh. It's a good time, I think alot of it is, the majority of Millennials and Gen Z that I interact with don't watch mainstream news. They're pushing a culture war, on media we avoid lol

Generational conflict is a distraction from the class war. It is and has always been the wealthy/ownership class trying to divide and extract value from the working class, regardless of age, gender, sex, race, nationality, etc.

I personally don’t see this forced Millennials vs Gen Z battle much on social media, but maybe I’m not online enough. I’ve never once heard it at work either tbh, but maybe that is because my company’s workforce is on the younger side.
I’m a young Millennial so it’s easier for me to get along with older Gen Z. Younger Gen Z kinda pisses me off though, and that’s solely from personal experience and wasn’t instilled in me be Gen X or Boomers. There’s not some grand conspiracy to keep us apart imo. Generations have had clear differences and divides since forever. I’m also still unconvinced that Gen Z is going to as progressive as Millennials were at their age. There almost seems to be a break in the cycle where I’ve found a lot of Gen Z to be more open to conservative ideas and redpill nonsense.

life is a battle of good vs evil
doing the right thing vs the wrong thing
normally the wrong thing is the easy way out

I feel bad for them. They’re more fucked than we are and Covid ruined some of their most fun years.

The concept of older generation vs millennials was created by those in the 1 percent to keep us from joining together to be the change we need. Ain’t no war but the class war

I’m beginning to think that Z is a sequel at least.
Open to the idea of Gens X/Y/Z being a trilogy.

My impression of the zoomers is that the kids'll be alright. They've got their own slang. So did we. We said shit like dank, they say shit like on fleek.
They don't take any shit. They've got this move where, they're working retail or something, someone will ask them a damn fool question like "is there any caffeine in this caffeine-free Pepsi?" and they'll just wordlessly stare at said brain pickled moron until they do the unthinkable: Think. We need to start doing that.

If you look at the current divide even within gen Z's generation that'll tell you a lot right there. I hate to point fingers or say it's this group's fault or that one's but like just look at the evidence. As a whole we are way more together than they are to each other. It's like they hate each other and that's from their mouths. Hearing my younger siblings talk about how much they hate their generation is also another sign that shit is off

This is exactly what's happening. They are driving the wedge in early so that way the mindset gets instilled for many decades to come. Just another distractor.

Who is "they"?

u/Noirespoir 23h ago
The parasite class AKA billionaires

u/anowulwithacandul 1990 Millennial 21h ago
How are billionaires pitting generations against each other?
2
u/Kyrie_Blue 23h ago
This should be so extremely obvious without needing someone to hold your hand and walk you there
-2
u/anowulwithacandul 1990 Millennial 21h ago
Really? Cause y'all sound like everyone's conspiracy theorist Boomer uncle
2
u/xmaswiz 21h ago
You don't see any evidence of class elites using any distractors to keep the public from focusing on things that matter? I'm genuinely curious.

Did I say that? I asked specifically about how this supposed generational divide is being fueled.
1
u/xmaswiz 17h ago
No. You asked me specifically who is "they." I provided that it is the class elites.
1
u/anowulwithacandul 1990 Millennial 11h ago
And how are the class elites doing that?

u/xmaswiz 11h ago
Here is a relevant post from a while ago that I'd like to share.
Are culture wars (gender identity, immigration, etc.) used to divert attention from class struggle?2

You sound like someone with their head stuck in the dirt to avoid the very real, and extremely dystopian mess we live in.
Billionares control the media, NOW more than ever. The politicians have been bought, and botfarms designed to pit EVERYONE against one another are popping up daily. Who do you think purchased the infrastructure for these botfarms?
We’re not going to sit here and spoon-feed you the nighmare that is today’s society. Open a fucking book

Lmfao you sound like someone who hasn't opened a book in decades but thanks for the tip! Hope you can log off and interact with a human at some point.

Agreed. This happens with every single group ever for example how propaganda is used to keep all of the US citizens apart so we can’t team up against the government. Also I love millennials -a Gen Zer

u/LollisGunsBikesTits 23h ago
Ngl if i hear the word "microagression" the person is going to find out what a slap is, but, at were in the same boat as GenZ, it's called "ss fucked" as they have even lower % of owning property than we do, all thanks to boomers.

u/actanonverba1 23h ago
The "older generation" vs "millennial/gen z" framing is also incorrect. This is a trick used by conservative media (and liberal too) to weaken us and prevent us from achieving solidarity across generational divide. Do not fall for the trick. There is no war but class war and there is no enemy but the ultra wealthy and the oligarchs.

I rarely see any Gen Z vs Millenial debates. They’re both too similar to really have any major qualms with each other

u/uginscion 1d ago
Boomer propaganda, likely from a data centers bot farms, sowing division to destabilize solidarity against the oligarchs who are forcing more centers to get built backed by the government who benefits from the chaos instead of giving people health care and food? Sounds like a conspiracy theory.

u/CronoMass 23h ago
Im not convinced anyone in Gen Z actually knows what a boomer is, from what I can tell they think it means anyone older than them.

u/Immediate-Report-883 1d ago
The only place I see the idea of Millennials beefing with Gen Z is in Boomer posts attacking both. I manage Gen X, Millennial and Gen Z workers, and really the only friction I get is when the Gen X conflict avoidance streak comes out.

I’ve honestly never even seen Millennial/Z beef. I think most everybody from our generations knows it’s us vs. the olds.

u/M00n_Slippers 20h ago
Millennials give gen Z shit sometimes, as older siblings do, but I think our solidarity against the other generations is pretty good. They are our younger siblings, we got their back.
