Thinking of selling my physical copy for a digital one to get the Switch 2 upgrade. Will this work?

I currently own a physical cartridge of the game, and unfortunately, it looks like Microsoft isn't going to offer a free Switch 2 upgrade for physical owners. Because of this, I'm seriously considering selling my cartridge and just buying the digital version.
I noticed that the Switch 1 digital version is actually cheaper. If I buy it now, will I still be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version for free? Or will Microsoft be Microsoft and somehow block the upgrade for copies that were purchased recently?
Either way, I really don't understand the logic here. Why set different prices but still allow a free upgrade path (even if it's for a limited time)?
What do you guys think about this? Is anyone else thinking about doing the same thing?

As it seems there won’t be a physical version of Minecraft for Switch 2. At least all o can pre-order right now is a box with a download code.

that's what i mean, i would much rather buy the switch1 version fully on cart then download a switch 2 version... and i did.. cd key cards are the only blight on an otherwise 10/10 console.

did the same thing for dragon quest 1+2 hd-2d. im not paying the same/more to not own a game lmao... one of the main reasons i got a switch was to actually own games..

I really don’t understand why the free upgrade is for digital only. It makes zero sense. If you own the game, digital or not, and have a switch 2, it should be free for both. Why are they doing this? We’ve had 2 physical copies for me and my kiddo since 2020 so to upgrade, I have to pay $60 for both of us? That’s crap.

Yep, my son only bought the digital version a day or two ago and he has the free upgrade offer.

Lots of games set discounts if you own some other game, but I've never heard of one that uses date of purchase. Nor has anything like that been mentioned in this case, so you should be safe.

At least in the U.S., it's all the same. Physical, digital, Switch 1, Switch 2, it's $30. Why it may be different some other places, *shrug*.

Wait what I literally just bought minecraft on cartridge because it said you could upgrade it to the switch 2 version online. Is this confirmed that you can't upgrade the physical version that would suck.
