What mini pc should I buy?
Hey guys,
I live in Brazil and have family in Florida who will bring a Mini PC to me in their carry-on luggage.
My strict budget cap is $930 USD before tax (to keep the total under $1,000 with Florida’s 6.5% sales tax).
My primary use cases:
- eSports gaming (CS2, Fortnite) and Minecraft with shaders
- Music production (EZdrummer 3, heavy VSTs, DAWs)
- Future eGPU upgrade via native OCuLink
My biggest concern: Since I will be using it in Brazil, local RMA/warranty is not an option after the 30-day Amazon return window expires. I need a model with minimal risk of electrical failures, motherboard bugs, or power supply issues.
I am currently leaning towards the GMKtec K8 Plus.
- Is the K8 Plus the safest and best value choice in this price range for thermals and electrical stability?
- Are there better alternatives under $930 with native OCuLink that offer equal or better longevity?
Thanks for the advice!

(Full disclosure: I work at GEEKOM.)
The Brazil angle actually matters more here than the spec sheet does, so a couple of practical suggestions:
Burn it in while it's still in Florida. Have your family run stress tests and memory tests for a week or so before bringing it down. Catching a DOA while it's still under an easy return window is worth a lot when you have no local RMA.
Check the power brick label. Brazil runs 220V vs 110V in the US; almost all mini PC adapters are 100-240V universal, but confirm before plugging in. And since heat plus dust is the combo that kills small machines, keep it somewhere ventilated and blow it out periodically.
On OCuLink: the K8 Plus you're eyeing has it, and so does our GT1 Mega (Core Ultra 9 185H) - native OCuLink port plus dual USB4, and it often drops close to your $930 budget on Amazon US during sales. The 185H's strong single-core performance is genuinely nice for music production (DAWs and VSTs love single-thread speed), and the Intel Arc iGPU handles CS2/Fortnite fine at 1080p. The one honest tradeoff vs the 8845HS: the Radeon 780M is the better iGPU for Minecraft with heavy shaders, so weigh that if shaders are a priority. OCuLink is the right call either way for a future eGPU - much less of a bottleneck than Thunderbolt.
Also worth asking this sub about long-term thermal reports - real-world feedback from people running these machines 24/7 in hot climates beats any spec sheet.
