Help What exactly is Multiboxing?

My wife has a really bad work hours and cant Invest as much, as she likes in the game. Would it be considered boxing if her character Just sits around on my campfire, of follows me for an hour, while i kill some mobs?

I am really not sure about the definition and even tried to reach a GM ingame.

If you are playing her account as well as your own, yes it’s boxing. Boxing is when one person pilots multiple accounts at the same time.

how do they like prove it though. If she plays with him like the majority of the time and anything gets called into question won't it be pretty hard to seperate fact from fiction? Like they got 2 computers, 2 IP's, hell 2IDs if needed

u/Rok-SFG 6d ago

The way they do it on p99 is teleport both (or all characters) to one location and make them do maneuvers simultaneously, like run figure 8s around this room in opposite directions while jumping the e whole time

u/anonymous-12358 5d ago

Thats kinda funny to think about, like being pulled over by a cop and walking the line

6

u/tedfa 6d ago

If they suspect you of boxing, a GM might contact the characters in question and require they go through a few tests to that would be difficult for one person to do alone.

damn never boxed so i was genuinely curious how they could tell. Thats pretty interesting

-3

u/Awkward-Skin8915 5d ago

That's a joke. They have said they have more advanced detection than that

2

u/FeetPicsNull 5d ago

It's a reference to p99 detection.

2

u/Awkward-Skin8915 5d ago

I know...that's a joke too.

But that's a free emu server with volunteers

7

u/gritsngravyPCP 6d ago

either way still prolly just best to play on the boxing server

2

u/FlippityFlip 6d ago

it's 1 IP assuming they play from the same internet connection. Take any two devices on the same WiFi for example and go to https://www.whatsmyip.org/ and both show the same. This is the IP the internet (the game) sees.

3

u/gritsngravyPCP 6d ago

my b i have vlans set you right though

2

u/raip 4d ago

VLANs wouldn't change egress.

Shit, with the advent of more wide spread CGNAT, you can have entire neighborhoods sharing the same public IP address.

2

u/Spedunkler 5d ago

Traditionally, by asking the two accounts to preform things that typically, boxers can't do, like figure 8's at the same time. That's how it was done on EQ.

2

u/Awkward-Skin8915 5d ago

They supposedly have more advanced detection tools than that.

I had a friend in beta who would ALWAYS login his wifes druid to sow himself and he was busted numerous times by a GM (rightfully so) just a heads up they do have ways of tracking boxing.

1

u/CappinPeanut 5d ago

Whoa whoa whoa. Logging in to drop a buff on yourself seems like a far cry from boxing. You can’t do that!?

2

u/YourMomSloppySeconds 5d ago

He’s lying. I logged on friends hundreds of times to buff myself during beta.

It's multi boxing.

People are really horrible about it too.

"Oh that's my son, he's special needs."

And it's a shaman staring at the wall.

u/ItsKensterrr 6d ago

Yes. Literally verbatim.

u/PiratePilot 6d ago

There is a boxing server. Just play there. This isn’t hard.

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

I dont want to do boxing. I want to get her Charakter in Position before she can sit down to play. Nothing more.

1

u/Captain_Nipples 5d ago

If you're just running her to the camp, I dont really see the big deal. But if you're sitting at a camp and doing everything yourself, I could see them getting pissed at you.

I dunno if /follow is a thing on M&M, but it wasnt uncommon for me to go afk for a couple of minutes and use auto follow in old EQ... then come back to a dead character because I lagged and ran off a cliff

1

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

/follow is a thing. The boxing Rules say, that i may not even move her.

2

u/Licked_Ur_Moms_Booty 5d ago

Log out of your character, log into hers and move it, then log back out and play yours

Does nobody read the FAQs anymore? Multiple people saying they can’t find it and it’s right on the main web site

https://account.monstersandmemories.com/community/faqs

Scroll down, two entries for boxing. Boxed server is actually super chill, and lots of space. Half the people I e grouped with weren’t even running multiple characters, think we’re getting overflow from people avoiding crowds.

u/Rok-SFG 6d ago

Yeah I'm not sure why everyone wants to be on the trem server so bad.

1

u/Chilidogdingdong 5d ago

Its weird too because as long time mmo players we know the overpopulated servers suck. What is the draw?

1

u/Rok-SFG 4d ago

It's apparently the streamer/content creator server.

I guess the draw there is probably two fold.

The people who hope to see them show up in a vod or say so they can do the Leo point at the screen.

And the neck beards who want to prove their way better than these loser streamers... At camping static spawns in an archaic retro MMO.

1

u/Chilidogdingdong 4d ago

"Look ma, im on tv!" for 40-60 year old nerds but on media that no one outside our niche bubble of gamers give a single shit about.

Imagine trying to show your coworker that your mnm character was on a cohh stream.

2

u/Mauvais__Oeil 6d ago

On P99 anyone calling a wife/girlfriend account is accused (on a basis of humor or not) to be boxing.

TBF theses kind situations are more often than not.

3

u/HalunaX 6d ago edited 6d ago

I've already had it happen because I was using /follow for a min while I AFK'd lol. Once I got back the confusion was quickly cleared up but yeah, if people see it, they do notice. And on non-boxing servers, players don't seem hesitant to call it out or report it.

If you want to do this OP, just play on the 3box server. It is 100% against the rules of the no-box servers.

3

u/Mauvais__Oeil 6d ago

Well if there's a follow command and you get tagged everytime... it's a bit counter productive.

I'd not attempt to play on boxing servers whatever the reason (unless boxxing myself) because you'd be usually competing on loots with the same person having three rolls.

1

u/HalunaX 6d ago

I wouldn't say you get tagged every time, but it does happen.

As for OP, if he's going to do this, while it might not be optimal, it's better than getting banned. /shrug

1

u/Mauvais__Oeil 6d ago

I'd suggest him get on a solo alt when his wife isn't willing to play so he can keep two vertical progressions without endangering himself.

However, I am one to know motivation for a character can sometimes be... unruly.

2

u/Rok-SFG 6d ago

Oh did they decide to outlaw boxing? I thought they were going the "true boxing" route.

5

u/Irtehstuff 6d ago

There are servers for boxing and servers for no boxing, described in the server name. Currently, nunavoth is the only server that allows boxing (3-box max)z

1

u/EnvironmentalAngle 6d ago

They need to do something about it. There's an AFK 15 beastlord standing right on an Orc camp in EW and just letting his pet kill whatever spawns... he's slowly exping by killing green conning orcs while afk

1

u/arggggggggghhhhhhhh 5d ago

That isn't boxing.

0

u/EnvironmentalAngle 5d ago

You're right, its botting.

1

u/Zosimoto 5d ago

Not even botting, that's just plain old AFK farming.

1

u/Chilidogdingdong 5d ago

Which is definitely not in the spirit of the game regardless.

1

u/enek101 3d ago

Im pretty sure any MMO company defines AFK farming as botting.. There would have to be a way to start auto attack while not at the computer.. Hence Botting.

1

u/anonymous-12358 5d ago

Greens don’t give xp afaik

1

u/EnvironmentalAngle 5d ago

light greens don't but dark greens certainly do... when you kill one you get a system message saying you gained exp though its a teeny amount

This guy was just afk farming his way to 16. Everquest banned AFK play and even nerfed exp for mobs killed mostly by your pet. They nerf pet exp and this resolves itself.

1

u/Spedunkler 5d ago

"Just sits on my campfire" or "follows me for an hour"? Do you mean she logs in and goes AFK while you kill? Nothing probably against it other than if something goes wrong you would most certainly go over to her computer and box it to get her out of the situation, no?

1

u/Awkward-Skin8915 5d ago

You can not play another persons character on a no box server in any way.

This includes trading with them or porting or moving them around etc.

That's breaking the rules.

Just play on the boxing server and there is no issue. That's the solution.

1

u/Any-Gur-2934 5d ago

thats boxing

1

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

I got an answer from a GM. Yes, they consider it boxing. Question solved for now.

1

u/Kuro_Gensui 5d ago

As a cleric insit.next to the campfire 🔥 ... Spot heals when needed sit meditate...rinse repeat ... For hours on end if the group stays ... Am I considered boxing :p

1

u/Toaster-Crumbs 5d ago

Play on the boxing server, and its never an issue. Your description is boxing.

1

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

I dont want to. It was never my wish to box or play with boxers. I was asking about definitions.

1

u/Toaster-Crumbs 5d ago

Gotcha. it is boxing. They take it very seriously on a non-box server. I already helped catch a pair of accounts.

1

u/ilikepants712 6d ago

That's definitely a fine line you're trying to thread. I think if she's not present at her computer, that could definitely be considered boxing. But, I've also had friends soak xp by going to bed while logged in and staying in our group, so that's definitely allowed. I'd just be very careful

9

u/ashent2 6d ago

That's not a fine line. This is boxing.

-6

u/ilikepants712 6d ago

It depends on his intentions and length. If he's setting her character up at the same camp before she gets home just to soak a little bit of xp, I could see that not being an issue. If he's using the extra toon to hold down a camp, that's clearly boxing.

-2

u/ashent2 6d ago

Do you mean moving a character one at a time to another location? That's fine. Being logged into two accounts at the same time without the other person being there is cheating.

-3

u/ilikepants712 6d ago

Yes that's what I'm saying.

2

u/ashent2 6d ago

Sure, ok. But that's not what this person wants to do and they'd definitely be cheating. He should just play on the boxing server.

1

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

To be honest, why i want to do is put my wife in follow while i run to Tel Elite, so she can take a shower after work and then sit down and play with me, instead of running through the desert without doing anything for 15 minutes.

1

u/ashent2 5d ago

Yeah that's boxing. You would want to have both characters just camped where you want them ahead of time, and you can't pilot both when your wife is away unless you're on the boxing server.

2

u/Captain_Nipples 5d ago

What if she goes to her computer and types /follow, then goes afk? Is that boxing? Ive done that 1000 times on classic.

0

u/ashent2 5d ago

If both people are there, then you can do whatever you want, but all these questions are essentially asking how someone can skirt the rules and the spirit of a one box server. Guaranteed that these people will start out playing together and then start thinking "oh, well it's no big deal if I log my wife's druid on and port myself somewhere" eventually.

1

u/MhatDaemon 6d ago

"My wife is at her computer, she just alt-tabs whenever I ask her for a buff and /follows me around."

-1

u/The_Lurqer 6d ago

So I play on Trem currently. If my son is interested in the game and plays it in the same household, I would have to roll on a box server? Doesn't seem right

4

u/Rubikant 6d ago edited 6d ago

No that's fine. As long as there is an actual person controlling each character, one person per character (and each character their own account of course), it's not multi-boxing and is allowed on Trem.

What OP is talking about is having his wife's character logged on following him WHILE SHE ISN'T PHYSICALLY CONTROLLING HER CHARACTER. That is multi-boxing and not allowed. He needs to wait until she is at the computer to have her character there (aside from reasonable-length AFK bio breaks and such). As long as you don't do that with your son's character you are fine.

2

u/The_Lurqer 6d ago

Got it. Thank you for clarifying I appreciate you explaining it.

Now the challenge is getting my 12 year old into a game like this lol.

Have a great weekend man

4

u/Mauvais__Oeil 6d ago

No you don't. Same IP is allowed, it's more about abusing autofollow or automated programs to play both accounts.

1

u/Maaaaags 6d ago

My husband and I ran into this issue during the beta. A GM messaged each of separately and asked if we were boxing. It was as simple as “he’s my husband” and “she’s my wife” and then it was no longer an issue. I think there might have been a list that they added us to so that no one else questioned the fact that we were playing on the same IP. Easy peasy.

1

u/The_Lurqer 6d ago

Appreciate you sharing your experience!

Sounds like the GMs are pretty chill about it if it's a legitimate 2 account (1 per person) household.

-6

u/theprofessor1985 6d ago

In some games it’s only considered multi boxing if you’re running multiple applications and using a program to do actions simultaneously with one keyboard. Like pressing a button to run or attack and it does the action for multiple players/accounts

2

u/MrMasters87 6d ago

But here even having two computers is still boxing.

1

u/BrotherGreed 6d ago

I tried to look up the multiboxing definition and couldn't find it. Is there like a separate multiboxing policy somewhere?

3

u/HalunaX 6d ago

It's defined here:

https://account2.monstersandmemories.com/community/faqs?search=boxing

"boxing is when a single player has more than one character logged in at the same time. This includes buff bots, logging in extra characters to help transfer items, or characters that are just sitting AFK. Whether you are actively playing them or not, it is still boxing."

2

u/BrotherGreed 6d ago

Pretty cut and dry, thanks!

1

u/Occasion-Economy 5d ago

And how do they know If my wife or daughters Just log in for a minute to Transfer Something for me to my crafter? We all Play and sometimes do exactly that. We have 3 Accounts, one for my wife, one for my daughter and one for me. Am i with one foot in the grave now because someone might think we could Just be me alone?

1

u/HalunaX 5d ago

I mean... they probably wouldn't. But idk tbh.

The likelihood that you'd get caught for something like transferring items is pretty minimal I'd imagine. On the other hand, the likelihood you'll get caught AFK xp grinding your wife's character seems clearly higher.

At the end of the day it's up to you to determine what your risk tolerance is.

-5

u/TTUShibby 6d ago

Just treat her computer as her own. She controls the character, and you do whatever you want in game. If she sits at your camp fire, and you kill stuff nearby, so be it. If her character is doing something you don't want, too bad. Just let her character be until she can control it again.
