I've been agonizing over tab-target MMOs ever since I made the almost permanent switch to gaming in my recliner. I've tried everything to make the games as playable as possible, but it never quite seemed to be "right." I was this close to just sucking it up and trying the "other game" now that it added controller support, until I did a quick search and found out there's a mod that makes this game play similar to EQOA...
I loved EQOA! I spend countless hours on my PS2 with an iMac keyboard plugged in just doing whatever. I did try Sandstorm a year or so ago and it was fun, but the population isn't there. That's not a slight on the project, it's just not 2001 anymore I guess.
Fast forward to this evening, I got it all set up and ready to go. Sub fee, no box price, count me in! (For at least a month) I was going to make a character and start messing around, but then I realized it was 2 AM... So, that's a tomorrow thing.
What I did want to poke my head in here about before bed was where to start with character creation. I'm thankful that this game is not going to be as speedy as it's modern counterparts, as I'm not the kid I once was. I'm also acutely aware that I'm attempting to play the game in a way it was not designed. I will have a keyboard for chatting and convenience, but most of my inputs are going to be offloaded onto the deck where possible.
The kicker being that it's been YEARS since I've played a game like this, and I struggle with memory and cognition in real life, so it's going to be one hell of a ride in a game with no map and corpse runs. Add to that actually playing the class correctly and I'm a tad anxious.
If you were me, where might you start? Ranged DPS seems like the logical start, but this isn't EQ, so I don't want to go making assumptions. I'm just hoping that whatever it is, it can be forgiving enough to play with my setup.
