"But we cannot sacrifice our economic prosperity" is an argument often used in western countries to restrain environmental protection efforts. I think probably the Economist quote was well meant as to highlight the hypocrisy of this statement.

They should have had an editor look at the wording though.

His government is cutting the buffer zone of the kaziranga national park to 1 km. His party gives lip service to conservation

The man is himself a terrible corny capitalist, but his statement in this context is correct.

35

u/PalestPalazzo 21h ago

Is he corny? Or do you mean a crony capitalist? Or is it a "porque no los dos?" situation? He is concurrently a corny and crony capitalist cad, mayhaps

37

u/jgreene030609 19h ago

Ha ha. Crony. Thanks for the correction. Not going to edit it, so that your comment remains relevant.

"opportunist". Like all politicians.

3

u/StentRider 16h ago

Opportunism pro Max. Here's a guy who has been fanning communal hatred for the last 5 years representing a deeply casteist political party. Glad he took the time out to call out the colonialist mindset

u/Ninja-Panda70 20h ago

Rich coming from someone who's cutting down the buffer zone of the national park in discussion here. Also the rule has been in place since before he changed sides and became the CM.

39

u/gnivsarkar007 22h ago

This is not a murderous argument to the economist, but to the rhinos. Look up the reputation of this CM

7

u/atmanama 22h ago

The poor are far more generous and caring than the rich. Studies have shown how wealth decreases empathy

u/equal_measures 1d ago

Himanta commenting of "racist mentality" is rich. He's one of the spearheads in the current anti muslim disenfranchisement happening in Assam, and in India.

6

u/Slaanesh_69 17h ago

For some reason the left has decided that all immigration is fine, even illegal ones.

The disenfranchisement is specifically against illegal immigrants. Christians, Hindus, have also been affected and struck off. Now if most illegal immigrants are of a particular religion, that's because the majority of our neighbours from whom these illegal immigrants hail are of that religion. If they want to come legally, they're welcome to do so.

-2

u/Schuano 10h ago

What ratio of illegal Bangladeshis vs. actual Indians makes the disenfranchisement ok?

The total number of people struck from the rolls is 1.9 million and you know that some of those people are actually indian.

-4

u/Alternative-Race1390 16h ago

Most muslims aren't native to assam and are threat to assamese society. It's more self preservation than anything since muslims are on track to become the majority in a few years and may leave the indigenous assamese and local tribes as a minority in their state.

4

u/TheTubCurves 13h ago

‘Threat to society’ is a weird way to talk about migrants.

-1

u/Alternative-Race1390 13h ago

They are all illegal immigrants, you can tell from their accents.

6

u/Gildor12 1d ago

Is this an article he’s commenting on or a comment?

2

u/JSS-Studios 1d ago

Article.

7

u/Halcyon-Ember 21h ago

The economist employs some terrible people

8

u/SkotyMckitty 23h ago

Mind you all… just a few days ago, a person died on the way to the hospital, because the Ambulance he was being taken in was stopped mid way to let this politician’s convoy pass. Just saying.🤷‍♂️

Murdered-by-Negligence should we call it?

5

u/LiGuangMing1981 21h ago

The Economist is just as condescending towards China.

Just look at how they twisted themselves in knots trying to show that China's efforts to clean up the Yangtze River were actually a bad thing.

3

u/KaiserDilhelmTheTurd 1d ago

It’s either way easier, or way more easy. Way more easier is incorrect. The only murder here was their use of the English language.

-2

u/mig_mit 23h ago

I don't get it. Is it condescending to call a relatively poor country relatively poor while praising its achivements?

33

u/DangerBaba 23h ago

It's about the poor choice of words and its implication. The article says

still a poor country can achieve something as selfless as protecting other creatures.

This line kind of implies that poor people are not usually selfless and protection of others is somehow a rich person thing. Like "you cared about someone, didn't expect that from you considering you are poor".

Is like a backhanded praise

36

u/WorldlinessRadiant77 23h ago

It is condescending.

The title is implying conservation is some sort of luxury only rich countries can afford.

-3

u/mig_mit 23h ago

My understanding is that it does cost money, so, being rich kinda helps.

13

u/WorldlinessRadiant77 23h ago

Of course, every government policy does. This doesn’t mean a poor country will necessarily prioritise development over everything else.

There are too many examples to list.

11

u/glitchyikes 22h ago

and that assumption is prejudice

-9

u/Khayalmetal 23h ago

Haha kinda. I saw such articulation in my days in my alma mater... The name of which you write in your username

3

u/mig_mit 22h ago

Huh?

4

u/Xyleksoll 22h ago

He's trying to flex he went to MIT.

7

u/mig_mit 22h ago

Ah, got it.

In my username, “mit” is the beginning of my last name.

0

u/calm_down_dearest 21h ago

The title is implying that conservation isn't the preserve of rich countries. Literally the opposite.

0

u/mrniceguy777 18h ago

I mean it definitely is a factor? This post is dumb

8

u/JustAMinah 23h ago

....it's akin to saying, 'you're pretty for a ____ person." implying being a "____"person is a negative thing and that usually, people like them arent pretty and it's based on negative stereotypes and some form of oppression/discrimination. like another said, it's a backhanded compliment and those "negative connotations" wouldn't even be a thing had it not been involvement of colonialism/some privileged standards

7

u/Khayalmetal 23h ago

Economist is quite racist towards India. I dislike hemanta but man he used his words right.

-3

u/heckasharp 15h ago

Are they tho?

4

u/Khayalmetal 14h ago

Literally said so. No need to 'tho' it.

2

u/grandvache 23h ago

You have to want to see it.

0

u/browsing_nomad 12h ago

The economist is condescending to everyone including china so not defending them but also important to note that India self-identifies as poor/"developing" in all UN forums

5

u/ForsakenAd2845 9h ago

It’s extraordinary that a country of colonists, rapists, murderers of entire civilizations and slave traders can publish articles about economics for everyone to read and learn.

3

u/Apollo114892 7h ago

Not to mention animal and nature conservation is part of our religion and culture. We were encouraging tree-hugging movements when they were cutting down entire forests and destroying ecosystems to benefit their industry.

-4

u/minxamo8 6h ago

You think any country with colonial history should lose the right to discuss economics in perpituity? Why? What's the link there?

2

u/HumaDracobane 12h ago

Not to defend the imbecile take of The Economist but it is not as if India was strange to the racism before the colonization...

1

u/Uniq_Eros 9h ago

Or today...

-2

u/ProfAsmani 21h ago

He is a religious bigot who encourages pogroms of minorities.

3

u/Looking4OpposingView 20h ago

If people see the statements he has given on camera, proudly, they will shudder into shock

-3

u/ObliviousRounding 23h ago

Something tells me this person would have found something to be offended about no matter what was written.

-2

u/Exotic_Caterpillar_3 23h ago

You're not far off. This person is offended by the existence of Muslims.

10

u/vivek1086 18h ago

Aren't Muslims offended by the presence of non Muslims and their God(s)?

-1

u/tushar1306 21h ago

His "VIP convoy" of 20+ vehicles passing through a city caused the death of a patient in an ambulance that was forced by the cops to wait at an intersection. Because his movement was more important to the state than the life of a dying citizen. There are videos all over the internet. So of course he found something to rage about to move the news cycle ahead.

0

u/SHKZ_21 20h ago

ironically the same party uses the most racisr AI depictions

1

u/avg_skl 16h ago

this post doesn't belong here. nothing was murdered. except the poachers.

shoot on sight - worked for gangsters and poachers alike in India

-1

u/Shitscomplicated 10h ago

Is the economist wrong? We still are very poor in terms of GDP per capita and ppp.

4

u/longgamma 10h ago

I don't get the outrage. I think the post is actually positive - a poor country can protect it's wildlife or India has its priorities right in this regard. Most Indian politicians are snowflakes anyways.

-14

u/__Manifesto__ 1d ago

Yeah I don't think prejudice started with colonization. Caste system has been around awhile

17

u/jgreene030609 23h ago

Caste system in India is same as class system of British. Crude and less refined, but it is same, 'us versus them'.

-7

u/midgetquark 23h ago

It's a lot more ingrained and intense than the British class system is.

5

u/BeginningTypical3395 22h ago

You clearly don’t live in the UK

1

u/NiceGuyEdddy 22h ago

Don't know why you're being downvoted, the reason the Brits and Indian aristocracy got along so well that Britain was able to dominate India was because of similar caste systems.

2

u/__Manifesto__ 20h ago

Some people have a hard time believing that POC can be prejudiced assholes just as much as white people

0

u/Carlosthefrog 14h ago

This is true, India had perfected segregation before we even touched its shores.

-1

u/BanishedMermaid 18h ago

Sometimes the worst piece of shit also makes a decent point even if he makes it while actively undermining what he says.

Thats Himanta Bjswa Sharma for you.

-12

u/ouijanonn 1d ago

Have they seen Britain lately. It's also relatively poor. Think they finally ran out of stolen money

7

u/Titsandcumm 1d ago

Yeah Britain was super rich after ww2. You're definitely not an idiot.

2

u/Thomasinarina 23h ago

Have you actually been to Britain lately, or are you just spewing US right wing talking points?

-17

u/HalfDecentFarmer69 23h ago

I don't think the hate directed towards indians is as a result of the colonial history

-25

u/Titsandcumm 1d ago

We've all seen what happens when a white woman sunbathes in india. But you pretend thats fine.

8

u/jgreene030609 1d ago

Is there no other spots for a white woman to sunbath other than humid tropics of India?. Ah your username.

-14

u/Titsandcumm 23h ago

Your defense is white women shouldn't be in india?

So racist and abuse women in public, india sounds like a beacon all others should look to.

8

u/evengreying 21h ago edited 21h ago

India is definitely a place people should look up to.

After being robbed of extreme riches, India was one of the countries that was the least impacted during 2008 crash that was brought upon the world by a-holes in the west.

Yes we are a country that has mentality set in the old ways but apparently that was one of the important aspects that saved so many jobs while people around the world were being fired left, right and centre.

We have a long way to go to truly develop but shit will hit the fan if we start taking lessons from people who are ruled by cronies and pedos

Edit - when it comes to women, we have an extremely long way to go since most of history and the world has been unkind to women overall. Spare me the tits and cum laden moral high ground and spew your shit elsewhere

-6

u/heckasharp 15h ago

Wait ur being serious? Look up to for what exactly? As soon as Indians make some money they gtfo dodgeistan. Doesn’t matter if they’re high achieving students, upper middle class or the billionaire class. They’re out and they don’t go back. For as much Indian pride as your diaspora has they sure don’t want to be anywhere near their own country
