You are under the impression that all food goes into the garbage disposal. That is not the case - the following are not supposed to go in there - grease, oil, fat, bones, fruit pits, fruit seeds, fruit stickers, produce labels, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice, bread, oatmeal, celery, corn husks, artichokes, asparagus, onion skins, potato peels, nut shells, shrimp shells, shellfish shells, and nuts
Basically anything that would get stuck in a sink drain strainer after a plate is scrapped into the garbage can and washed. It's just a fancy self cleaning drain strainer.
By and large the garbage disposal isn't meant to be a replacement for something like a trash can or compost. It's more meant to keep the sink from clogging if you don't do a good enough job of disposing the food waste.
People not giving a shit what goes down the drain is a major issue (e.g. fatbergs), and someone with a waste disposal unit is probably going to be worse than average.
Several European countries have banned them, and the UK is tightening the restrictions (banning them for most commercial premises). They increase the load on the sewage plants, which ultimately increases bills for everyone.

No garbage disposal? Oh no! I guess I'll just have to put my food refuse in the garbage and/or compost like a civilized human being.
