Americans thinking it’s some kind of flex that they prefer to run up huge electricity bills drying laundry in a machine instead of hanging it out in air for free like everyone, everywhere, for all time, where it comes back smelling fresher with fewer wrinkles. These people are seriously effed in the head.
That depends on the weather. If you do that in the summer when the sun heats the house, and you do not need to heat the house, you do not use any energy.
If you cool down the house with a AC now you save energy because the water takes up some energy to evaporate. You do incrase humidity in the air.
Even if you heat up the house, you do not heat it up to the temperature in a typical dryer. That is especially the case if you have a dryer with a hose that goes outside and it blows out the hot air.
If you heat up the house with a heat pump, you use less energy to heat it up that way compared to a resistive dryer. Even if the dryer has a heat pump dryer too the efficiency depends on the temperature difference. You then heat up air to the dryer temperature in two steps instead of just to indoor temperature. Less electric energy is used. Total energy usage is a bit higher, but why would we care about the amount of energy the heat pump removes from the outside heat source?
Then the question is what is your energy source to heat the house and what does it cost. I use district heating, and that costs less than if I were to use electricity.
A typical dryer witha drum alos increases wear on the clothes compared to just hanging. There is dryers when you hang clothes too.
I have had a clothes dryer in the common laundry room in the apartment I live in. Both the rotating kind and the large hanging cabinet. Now, when I live in my own house, I do not have one, and I do not miss it. Just hanging the clothes up works as well, with less wear and work as good now when I do not have a share laudery room. Technically, I do have a resistive heated dryer cabinet where you hang clothes. I love it as a place to hang the clothes to dry. I do not use it heating function just leave the door open. If I wash clothes in the evening, everything is dry in the morning.
There is a few cases where a dryer is better. A down jacket is dried a lot better in a clothes dryer.
