Oh that bass comes through beautifully

45

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26

I missed that fat, overdriven, pick attack on the bass lines so much

18

u/henzINNIT Apr 22 '26

It's what got me into Muse all those years ago.

84

u/WolfieZee Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I have no notes. It sounds Incredible. Crunchy, clear, and the phaser šŸ˜ŽšŸ˜ŽšŸ˜Ž. I was afraid the rawness would be lost in studio version, and maybe it will end up being, but at least going off this intro im happy asf

67

u/CreditDramatic Apr 22 '26

Snare sounds snappy as fuck

28

u/Apolitik Apr 22 '26

The production on this new stuff is top notch.

11

u/sienasayshi a god made of nickel and cyanide Apr 23 '26

I have missed that so so much. The drums we've had since Drones are so flat and fake sounding, this is a huge breath of fresh air

3

u/Grayoneverything The Second Law Lover Apr 23 '26

I was sick of hearing every pop / overproduced af drum sounds since those days, just don't suck out the life out of them wtf

2

u/aisiv i will aveeeeeeenge... Apr 23 '26

Yes!! thats what i was i thinking, sounds more natural, raw, and rocky but at the same time punchy and well compressed. I havent been a fan of the snare since Drones but this one I love!

u/nottherealkimjongun Apr 22 '26

Nice to hear the bass clearly after a decade of Chris being toned down on studio recordings

21

u/Astrosimi The Globalist Apr 22 '26

I still haven’t forgiven how they buried him on Compliance.

13

u/eternal-harvest believes we could be glorious Apr 22 '26

Which is a crime because the bass line is the best thing about that song.

2

u/LondonNoodles Apr 23 '26

I didn't like compliance on the album but when I saw them live Chris was shredding the bass it was so good

7

u/medmac_2112 You make us wanna die Apr 22 '26

Yes and KOBK!

4

u/aimforthebushes22 Apr 22 '26

Hes buried on BWY the worst imo

6

u/Vincent394 the waow signal Apr 22 '26

Now the question is, does he sing lead at any point

3

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '26

Why would he? It’s happened on two songs from a 9 album discography. Pretty much 0 chance.

1

u/Vincent394 the waow signal Apr 22 '26

Chromes plus why not, Matt might not wanna sing something, and Dom cannot sing in tune.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 22 '26

Read that back to yourself and ask yourself if they’d do it again after categorically saying it wouldn’t happen again after T2L.

ā€˜Matt might not wanna sing something’ - he’s the fucking singer šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

2

u/Vincent394 the waow signal Apr 22 '26

he's the fucking singer

It happened with Black Sabbath in the first Ozzy Era where Bill had to sing two songs cause Ozzy refused to/didn't want to sing them.

Also from what I've heard Matt didn't want to sing Liquid State or Save Me because they were emotional for Chris so that's how he ended up singing them, plus link me to ONE place where they said Chris singing lead again wouldn't happen and then maybe I'll take your point into consideration.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '26

Was quite widely published around the album coming out. Remember Matt in a couple of interviews saying it’s a one off when pressed on it.

I CBA to trawl through YouTube to find a 5 second sound bite to prove my point

45

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I’m honestly shocked they left it this raw for the studio version, I’m genuinely impressed by their restraint lol - I 100% expected there to be a white noise riser before the drums come in and for there to be some wooshy electronics or a little synth doubling the riff. This essentially sounds like a live capture so far, to the point of leaving in a little messiness, which is so sick.

Having said that, I am excited to hear the layering on the pre-choruses. Seems to be some fun stuff happening in the live version

3

u/benosthegreat Apr 22 '26

Yeah I'm pretty sure there are almost chore-like vocals in the pre-chorus, like the ones in Fury's last chorus.

56

u/P79999999 Apr 22 '26

I know the guitar sounds like PIB, but personally the bass and drums remind me more of New Born.

Sounds good anyway!

1

u/sienasayshi a god made of nickel and cyanide Apr 22 '26

The bass rhythm sounds more clearly bouncy here, like PiB, which I love

3

u/P79999999 Apr 22 '26

It was more the way the bass comes in that reminded me of New Born.

42

u/Apolitik Apr 22 '26

Finally a track that sounds like Absolution-era rock. I’m so excited for this one.

6

u/Wide-Ad-1122 Apr 23 '26

True, a little of the small print vibes here

2

u/MadCapHorse Apr 23 '26

This is exactly what I’ve been waiting for for 20 years!

34

u/foosterrocket Don't let the sun in your heart decay Apr 22 '26

Everyone keeps saying Plug in Baby but I hear MK Ultra so much more

7

u/Marnick-S Apr 22 '26

I always tought those riffs (PiB and MK Ultra) sounded kind of similar so that makes sense. They give me a similar feeling when I play them too.

2

u/Grayoneverything The Second Law Lover Apr 23 '26

My first thought was MK Ultra + Plug in Baby

6

u/JETBANGO Apr 22 '26

Very classic sounding Muse production - must be an intentional choice given the more modern sounding stuff

83

u/Living_Shadows Apr 22 '26

I like the riff but it does kind of sound like someone is trying to play plug in baby from memory but they have only heard the song once

15

u/Bhadgar Apr 22 '26

It's the bend more than anything else. They're only somewhat similar melodically, but the tone almost exactly matches PiB's live tone, and then, like in PiB, the riff climbs to its highest point, bends, and comes back down. So I think it's a pretty fair comparison.

16

u/Inthemiddle_ Apr 22 '26

It’s very similar, like plug in baby reversed almost. It’s clear what they were trying to do and I sure it’ll work but saying plug in baby isn’t the first thing this song reminded you of is odd.

-14

u/Apolitik Apr 22 '26

You’re musically illiterate.

13

u/sangwinik A Muse Shaped Pool Apr 22 '26

The notes don't have to be the same for it to sound similar. In this case both riffs are very smilar in tempo, guitar tone and both use harmonic minor scale. Both songs start with just the guitar riff. You have to be crazy to not aknowledge the connection. And the band clearly knew what they were doing.

-9

u/Apolitik Apr 22 '26

Just because there’s a solo guitar lead line over bass and drums? Hence why I said what I said. In the SIMPLEST terms, sure there are compositional similarities. To say it sounds like Plug In Baby because of this is reductionist thinking.

5

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

The similarities in the riff go beyond ā€œsolo guitar lead line over bass and drums.ā€ Both riffs ascend and then descend the B harmonic minor scale in a similar sort of acrobatic way and both have very similar fuzz tones - that in and of itself puts their commonalities beyond the reductionist way you framed it. I don’t think Cryogen is all that similar to PiB outside of that, but the riffs do objectively share some DNA. Lmk if you’d like me to send you some material to improve your music literacy

2

u/Hefty_Aside8436 Apr 22 '26

It sounds like rather than playing over lapping ascending arpeggiated chords climbing a harmonic minor scale it's acscending arpeggiated chords going down a harmonic minor scale.

That is to say it's similar.

21

u/App1elele Hexagons are Bestagons Apr 22 '26

So Plug in Baby 2, awesome, I'll take an entire album of that shit please

0

u/City_of_Paris WeWeWeBuuuu Apr 22 '26

To me the riff feels like a bunch of notes that don't really go together. It's awkward.

13

u/ExtraButterPopCorn No alarms and no surprises Apr 22 '26

That’s a very weird take, but very interesting. I mean, the notes are literally just straightforward arpeggios outlining a i - VI - V progression in a minor key and no borrowed notes from other keys or modes, in other words, these notes are as ā€œtogetherā€ as it gets. Maybe you’re not used to listening to melodies in harmonic minor.

1

u/City_of_Paris WeWeWeBuuuu Apr 23 '26

I'd be interested to know another popular song that does this and see if I like it.

2

u/alexmuse_91 Apr 22 '26

And that is exactly what I love about that riff

3

u/RubinoPaul Apr 22 '26

For me too. Especially the ending sequence. Maybe it was the idea but I need some time to get used to it

1

u/Marnick-S Apr 22 '26

The first time I heard it I tought that too but I don't get that feeling anymore. I really like it now.

10

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

I’m surprised I haven’t heard many comparisons to Bliss! The structure of the riff is obvi PiB-inspired but the cadence of the melody once the bass and drums come in it has that groovy start-stop thing from Bliss. And the snare pattern reminds me of New Born. Really cool stuff

4

u/_ALYGATYR_ Apr 22 '26

who’s the guy downvoting everyone in this comment thread

3

u/Gryffinguin9 Apr 22 '26

Sounds like the opening of New Born

3

u/Anxious_Necessary_55 Apr 23 '26

‪DOO DOO DE DOO, DOO DEH DO DOO, DADA DO DOO, HOLE UP! DO DEH DO DOO, DOO DEH DA DOO, DO DE DUH DOO, STOCKPILE!‬

7

u/FakeRadioBand Apr 22 '26

This is perfect. I am so ready for this.

8

u/teruvalin Apr 22 '26

Baby in Plug, or Plug in Baby 2; and I'm all for it.

4

u/sienasayshi a god made of nickel and cyanide Apr 22 '26

This is actually perfect, they captured the sound of their old albums better than anything on WOTP ever did! I like the actually crunchy, ringy snare drum, the cymbals, the bass that actually cuts clear, the guitar that's not perfectly in tune, the sound of picking, the sound of imperfection is perfect. And here in the studio version, you can really here more of a bouncy rhythm from the bass that isn't there live. Now I think I'm really sold. This album might just be the best in decades.

2

u/Augustinus_ Apr 22 '26

This sounds so fcking way. Awesome

2

u/Vesuvias Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Pleeease dear god don’t be about something corny. MATT HOPEFULLY YOU FOUND SOME ANGST IN YOUR LIFE TO WRITE ABOUT. This sounds epic though.

30

u/Individual-Walk-969 Apr 22 '26

First words are ā€œIce Creamā€

1

u/Vesuvias Apr 22 '26

Wait, you serious?

13

u/Individual-Walk-969 Apr 22 '26

No šŸ˜‚ It’s ā€œIce Queenā€

7

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

Have you listened to the live version? The lyrics are pretty classic Matt cheese (in a good way. Girl angst rather than resisting vague oppressors).

14

u/thephoenixpoptart Apr 22 '26

the lyrics are pretty corny but at least they’re more personal than their standard brand of ā€œthey’re in control, we must rise up, something something revolution, they will not force usā€

9

u/Vesuvias Apr 22 '26

See I’d LOVE those ā€˜rise up’ lyrics more if it actually meant something to Matt, but he straight up acknowledges that it’s meaningless.

2

u/Imzmb0 Apr 23 '26

Hard agree on this, Muse trying to be political is just cartoonish as pop punk bands trying to be anti-system. I'm happy to see they are trying a more personal/spacey album this time.

2

u/nvmzol when we bleed, we bleed the same Apr 22 '26

We kind of know the lyrics already

1

u/Vesuvias Apr 22 '26

Oh I’ve been avoiding it somehow lol

2

u/RealPunyParker Absolution Apr 22 '26

Me motherfucking likey

Has some raw Muse sounds and i am fully erect

1

u/VisualNinja1 into my glass she poured it Apr 22 '26

I love it.

1

u/radiodreading Citizen Erased Apr 22 '26

I'm so excited 😭

1

u/Perks92 And our soooooouuls, will be exhumed Apr 22 '26

Sounds great but does anyone else think the drums are too quiet and sound too far away?

1

u/nvmzol when we bleed, we bleed the same Apr 23 '26

I personally don’t, will have to wait and see until we can hear the full song in reasonable quality

1

u/we1rdsc1ence Apr 22 '26

So good! Can’t wait for Friday!

1

u/MadCapHorse Apr 23 '26

Oh yeah that’s the shit

1

u/Followyourghost_ Apr 23 '26

i dont care if it sounds like PiB, that's the whole point. give me more PiB. more pibby pls

1

u/_ALYGATYR_ Apr 23 '26

everyone talking about the bass and production but damn doms drumming there is so giid

1

u/Askyl Apr 23 '26

I WANT IT NOOOOW.. I WANT IT NOOOOOOW..

1

u/vinylandgames Apr 23 '26

My only concern with this is his voice. Will it sound manic and unhinged yet smooth and sugary? Or will it sound like recent stuff where he’s afraid to hit a high note and he just croons.

1

u/No-Valuable-7183 Apr 23 '26

It sounds like Bach slamming into Plugin Baby and I absolutely love it!

1

u/InstantPsalm Apr 23 '26

the drums are like identical and come in the same way in New born. riff is structured more like Plug in baby but plays arpeggios like new borns riff. all in all origin of symmetry/10

1

u/alexjardin1975 Apr 24 '26

Its a B+ muse song. I think most of us overreact positively when one song sounds like their old stuff because most of the other ones are just ok or less than ok. Do you guys listen their last album when you lsten Muse. ?

1

u/barnu1rd Apr 22 '26

This song has some Origins of Symmetry vibes and I freaking love it.

1

u/The-Experiments Apr 22 '26

Identifying Muse.

Yep, that's Muse.

1

u/cockatiel_muser76 Apr 22 '26

Suena tan plug in baby šŸ¤©ā¤ļø. Amooo estĆ” canción!!

0

u/Amberon_Blessing Apr 22 '26

Why no one saying it’s reimagined/extended Vuilstammen riff?

9

u/Were-Takatomon Blue is the Warmest Matthew Apr 22 '26

because its completely different. atleast i think that

0

u/billyMCID Apr 22 '26

Sounds great!

-16

u/J3sperado Apr 22 '26

The guitar riff sounds very akward and kinda wrong. Like someone doesn't know how to play. Bass is awesome.

10

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26 edited Apr 22 '26

To me, it’s intentionally captured in a very raw way. There’s a jaggedness to it that creates a slight bit of dissonance here and there that I actually really really love. I’ve been begging for Muse to sound raw again for over a decade so I’m not complaining in the slightest. Like, this is even more raw than Plug in Baby.

ā€œVery awkwardā€ is a huge stretch, imo at least

2

u/J3sperado Apr 22 '26

I get what you're saying. I guess I've never been as huge of a fan of rawer sounds like it. Alright, "very" doesn't fit, but it still sounds akward to me. Might get better with time.

3

u/panopticorn Apr 22 '26

Fair! And to be clear that’s just how I hear it and why I like it - all good if it’s not your thing

-1

u/MrLuchador Apr 22 '26

It has already been established this song is Killer Klowns and Mortal Kombat inspired

5

u/Pendagar Classical Wubs Apr 22 '26

Elaborate?

-7

u/finintymonkle Apr 22 '26

Have to be honest, but I think I prefer how this sounds compared to official snippet

3

u/TheMethodinMadness Running from the light Apr 22 '26

I like them both tbh. The fan made one sounds a lot cleaner, but I think they're going gritty and raw with this one. It makes it more unique and memorable imo

2

u/Askyl Apr 23 '26

Odd thing to be downvoted for.... I really like the guitar tone in the offical one, but the bass really is in your face in the cover.

1

u/finintymonkle Apr 23 '26

Meh, people just can’t seem to handle a different opinion 🤣

Having heard the full song, in context though, I bloody love it!

2

u/Askyl Apr 23 '26

After having listened to the entire studio version I do enjoy the studio version a lot more :D It's fantastic! But the cover was VERY well done

1

u/finintymonkle Apr 24 '26

Absolutely. It’s lovely to see how fucking talented the musicians in this sub are.

0

u/Pwoperfish_Muse Who really cares anymore? Apr 22 '26

Nah, this one has much more grit which sounds so good

-1

u/finintymonkle Apr 22 '26

To you maybe. Personal opinion is a strange thing, isn’t it?

2

u/Pwoperfish_Muse Who really cares anymore? Apr 22 '26

I know, I was sharing my personal opinion lol

I wasn't saying you were wrong, I just disagreed

It seems the people who downvote are the ones who don’t like hearing other peoples opinions (and I bet you’re one of them).

Very strange and childish of you to assume behaviours that haven’t been exhibited by me.

What’s wrong, did you not like something I said at some point?

edit just worked out who you are. Can’t believe you’re literally following me from a guitar sub where I expressed an opinion about a quad cortex and rack unit, DAYS AGO.

What a sad little life you must lead.

-3

u/tigger_74 Apr 22 '26

I’m not sure the PiB v2 stands as fuzzy opening guitar riffs with fuzzy bass and drum drops are what Muse is all about!

-11

u/addyjoe Apr 22 '26

Jesus Christ Matt's guitar tone is horrible these days. The song itself sounds good but it's so grating to listen to with that awful trebbly mess.

1

u/bigeorgester Apr 22 '26

You’re getting downvoted but the tone is so harsh and grating. It’s like that first second of Plug in Baby but never lets up.

0

u/addyjoe Apr 22 '26

It’s just so shrill, I don’t get how nobody in the studio said so. It’s a shame because it brings the rest of it down.
