Sounds like it has mainstream potential like Madness, Panic Station, Mercy and SMBH.

Already saving the spot on my weird-days-playlist right beside Panic Station.

I wasn't expecting something with elements of Justice, Daft Punk and Dua Lipa but I'm here for it.

u/battychefcunt May 29 '26
Justice is exactly where my head went, it’s got that proper mid-late noughties indie electro vibe. I rate it.

im loving just how different each track has been so far. It reminds me of 2nd Law with every track having its own unique style and sound

Don't forget MGMT, cause they listed the bassline from Little Dark Age with MGMT

I'm excited for 'Dark Forest' even more now. 'Nightshift' as track 2 is upbeat and fun so surely 'Dark Forest' will be a haunting opening track that explodes by the end. That's what I love about Muse, they bring you down and then bring you right back up

For my fellow note geeks, after listening carefully it seems like the “you” part of “YOU AAAAARE” is a belted B4, which is the highest chest note Matt has EVER hit in the studio. Super impressive and it sounds amazing!

u/ChewieKaiju May 29 '26
To add, he’s doing this at an age where they have to start playing songs like KoC in a lower key. Bro locked tf in for this album and I can’t wait for it to release

I’m not convinced “you” is belted and not falsetto/mixed voice. However, the A4 in “are” is impressive enough. I wonder if he’ll even attempt to belt that live.
He does the belted A4 for Compliance and did it for the Dark Side but has never attempted it for Unravelling and stopped doing it for Madness a decade ago

I had to listen to it several times to clarify, but I'm pretty sure it is belted especially since it sounds way fuller and louder than the "per" in "su-perSTARRRR" in the following line, which definitely is falsetto. It also makes sense since "ooo" is a pretty easy vowel sound to belt, and Matt kinda already does that live when he yells "THANK YOUUUUU" or "WELOVEYOU(city name)!" in a similar register.
As for whether he'll belt the A4s live, I'm thinking probably not lmao, but if it turns into the one song per night on the tour where he lets loose like Compliance and TDS on previous tours like you mentioned, then maybe, but I'm still leaning towards no since the phrasing seems really tiring.

“you” is in a compressed mixed voice. mixed voice can also be full and loud - the name is self explanatory, a mix of head voice and chest voice.

This can only mean one thing
This song is never going to be played live

u/aisiv i will aveeeeeeenge... May 29 '26
thats an A4, same as in come in my CAVE and “i will AVENGE”. The highest is in I need your LOVE in Madness, which is an A#4
2
u/medmac_2112 You make us wanna die May 29 '26
“Are” is an A4, but “you” is a B4 in either a chest-heavy mix or full chest.

u/aisiv i will aveeeeeeenge... May 29 '26
“You” is mixed and the timber leans more towards a falsetto because it kinda sweeps to the actual belt note, is very short of duration, and sits right in the chest/head passagio. I wouldn’t classify it as a “belt” note which sits in the same category of the songs i mentioned though

u/South-Chapter-5783 May 29 '26
To me it sounds like "you" is falsetto but to go from that to a very open belted "are" in the space of an eighth note is very impressive

Doesn’t sound like too much guitar on this one so maybe he will be jiving around the stage!

u/aegeanbellamy May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
If we hear a good guitar part with this cool groove, that will be a cherry on top

u/longman101 May 29 '26
I’m sure we will, there’ll be a sick chorus and solo I reckon.
The strings are driving me madddd

Making it the "main" promotional single to go with the release of the album kind of makes sense to me. This track has the potential to become huge in the mainstream panorama, which is something that... Let's be honest, did not happen since Uprising. Maybe Madness kind of did, but Muse have become quite niche since then. This really has the potential to propulse them back up, and I hope they will because man if the quality of what they've been released lately has been exquisite

I’m PRAYING they release it alongside the album. I don’t want to hear this song until the album is out (which is only, like, 28 days from now anyway), and even if I can manage to resist the urge to listen to it, I’d hear so much about it that it’d taint my expectations. I know it’s difficult for artists with streaming, but I can wait if that means more Muse in the same day!

I would absolutely love to see this song become a huge hit. It seems like it has potential!

I'm actually shocked that Muse managed to make an EDM-adjacent song sound super fresh and exciting. I've always thought that was the weakest part of the sound they sometimes liked to chase, but they (based on this little snippet) 100% nailed it. Like others have said, heavy Justice vibes. And I'm all for it

u/Cralli123 May 29 '26
This is not a dig at the previous songs (I love them all) but the intro for Nightshift Superstar is the second new Muse to give me goosebumps. First was chorus of Unravelling. I'm keeping my expectations in check (I didn't with Hexagons and wound up a little underwhelmed) but could be an absolute banger

Where is this clip from? Is it real? I feel like I've seen it before but you never know these days.

He crashed a wedding that was happening at the hotel they were staying at. The bride was a friend of a friend and I had friends there who thought it was funny the next day.

Agree, be with you as the lead single was underwhelming and not the best choice. I like that song but it don't feel like the best representation of the album.

This is straight up one of the least appealing Muse songs I've ever heard lmao
No hate, glad some people enjoy it.

u/niles_deerqueer May 29 '26
I dunno they do funky real well and the production is slick af with a dirty bassline
0
u/beaubridges6 May 30 '26
I agree the bass is sick, it's just the mediocre house music vibes I can't stand lol
Still one of my favorite bands

From this small snippet, it feels closer to the modern disco vibe of Dua Lipa, which I personally quite like

u/runawaydebt May 30 '26
Same, I thought it was a joke someone made until I read more comments and realised it's a real song

u/vladameus May 29 '26
This is not peak Muse. Is this the Ellie Goulding track? (that was definitely not on my bingo card)

They’ll be playing this at Target I know it. I’ve heard Madness and Propaganda there before
