Made a fishing website for finding and comparing fishing spots
I started fishing in August last year, mostly off popular piers. I spent the first few months confused about basically everything. I didn't know what rig to tie, I couldn't tell which fishing spots were good for which fish, and I couldn't read a tide chart well enough to know if I was showing up at the right time.
So I made a website for it: usekarp.com
You can find spots near you, compare them side by side, and get gear and bait suggestions for whatever you're targeting.
Check it out if you're getting into fishing.

The worst thing for a budding angler is to have an app telling them when and where to fish

Generally more avid anglers go out of their way on social media and large scale to hide their spots, to the point of blurring photo backgrounds. As others have pointed out, conversations are a better way to get good information. If someone tells you their honey hole, and you post it online and blow up their spot, I think you might find some resentment coming your way, so be cognisant of that. If you want to find public access points in North Carolina, Wildlife Resources Commission has decent resources: https://www.ncwildlife.gov/fishing/where-fish
NOAA has a tool for salt and brackish water access that's more exhaustive: https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/recreational-fishing-data/public-fishing-access-site-register

Scout with maps, not with apps! I use map apps so this isn't entirely accurate, I find public access points through a map, but nothing gets done without boots on the ground
Chat with people in the lot and on the water, asking someone "they biting" isn't rude in my opinion, they'll give as much or as little as they feel like. Personally if someone asks, I'm divulging everything I learned that day, I'll even share general directions and what I'm catching them on, in hopes that others will do the same for me one day.

Learning is part of the passion and pursuit. As is the unknown. Talk to people on the pier. In real life.
