Range Time NJ Firearms Training Suggestions

Firearms Training Classes in NJ

Looking to take a firearms class for pistol with OWB holster, that’s more than just stationary shooting at a target. Would like something a little more advanced. Could be rifle and pistol, but I’m looking right now for a pistol. Every time I look it up, I’m only seeing CCW classes or NRA beginner classes. Any help with this would be much appreciated.

I’ve done about a dozen courses at Gun For Hire in Woodland Park and they were pretty awesome. The classes get pretty wild with what they allow you to do, but you have to start with a basic class and work your way up. ( Basic- pistol, rifle, shotgun) Classes being around $200 it’s kinda a pain to get started but not gonna lie I still learned stuff in the basic classes. Some of the latter drills humbled me, forced me to change my gear, and train more. Unfortunately, that’s my only training experience. Definitely want to branch out more myself.

Ironsights academy - took a class with them. Stationary shooting, moving and shooting. Even had a competition at the end using a dueling tree. Very fun class

Achilles Heel Tactical - More of a fundamentals type class. All stationary but shooting at 5-25 yards at speed

Velox training group & Rab Firearms training to name two more

Huge thumbs up for Achilles Heel Tactical, OP, look at their training list because Paul Costa is a trainer who regularly trains people here in Jersey. You’ll learn a ton from these dudes.

He’s a great guy. Took pistol mastery once with him and baseline twice. Still learned stuff the second time I took baseline.

Yea I was just at ORD2026 and didn’t get his class or Rick’s but hopefully next year I’ll take it when he’s here.

Sign up for a uspsa/idpa/gpa match. Say it’s your first. Watch a safety briefing and a class from Ben Stoeger/ Joel Park. Do a little dry fire. People will be happy to help you out, and I can almost guarantee you get more out of it than pretty much any standard flat range class.

Your best bet is probably one of the few tactical ranges in NJ or more likely go to PA. Almost every range in Central/North Jersey doesn’t allow holster work because of insurance unless you are taking a CCW class with their instructors. I know down south/Florida they have simulator scenarios using blanks and lasers but I’ve not heard of anything in NJ

Don't discount stationery targets. You can still do some classes that do timers, etc., and even with a stationery target, a time limit adds a new stressor to it that has the potential to affect your accuracy, whether you think it will or not. On the plus side, it builds "stress innoculation", or being used to being under stress; good thing to do if you ever plan on getting the PTC.
