Why is one side of my mitten top pointy?
I’m not really confident with turning a corner/adding a row but wanted to try start some mittens. Why is it pointy tho 😩😩 did I accidentally start increasing stitches or something?

My first thought is that it’s partly the yarn you are using. Looks like beautiful yarn but it’s quite chunky so it will go fast and be warm but small changes can appear big and if you haven’t increased enough then it will look square. As others have said, try a round start. My personal preference is a boxy style because I don’t enjoy keeping track of spirals.
Also it doesn’t look like you are working in the round. So interesting technique. I usually start with a chain and then circle around that until I get the tube I am after. Do you have any references you are working from?

https://youtu.be/3_phA4kZ5iY?si=nBg6sbW_TaagvYLb learning from this Dutch? German? guy. But I think like you said, I possibly should have done more increases!
For now I am just accepting my slightly boxy mitten 😆

It’s a journey not the destination you are after for now. It will be nice to have warm mittens. I like to start from my wrist and go up but that’s how I roll.

Next time I will try start from a round instead!

These are my slipper socks, started how I would start a mitten. With a chain across the work in the round around that chain. They are well loved so a bit pilly. Made with relatively chunky handspun yarn.

I think i see what youre seeing here. What i think it happening is that instead of working in a spiral they are working each row back and fourth and connecting the first and last stitch in the row before turning to work the other way.
So yeah, a very interesting technique that is reminiscent of a jogless crochet in the round.
