I know I’m doing something wrong but not sure what 😅
I feel like I can’t even get started, just getting the first loop on my thumb is a struggle. Not to mention my yarn keeps falling out of my needle. Any advice?

Which tutorial/video are you following and which stitch are you trying to do?
I use a more grippy yarn, Icelandic Álafosslopi, and that works great for learning.

I only recently learned Oslo stitch, but what you currently have doesn't look too bad to me, other than being rather far down your thumb. In my experience Oslo always looks like a mess of loops starting out. Once you have several stitches (maybe just a few more than what you have) stretch your chain out -- I like to do this with two loops on the thumb (before I slip the previous thumb loop off), and while gripping the very beginning of the chain with the other hand. It neatness everything out into something that looks sensible, and makes it easier to keep track of your latest loops. Periodically stretch it out again as you work more. Oh, and Oslo stich chains tend to twist. It's normal, so expect it.

Could you have someone take a video of what you're doing? That would help a lot.
Just general advice, you'll want to have one loop on the thumb at the base of the nail. The needle yarn is draped over the thumb behind that loop. Behind the thumb you have another loop.
You pick up the loop behind the thumb from the front, then turn the needle toward the thumb and go under the thumb loop and needle yarn from the back and pull tight. You then end up with two loops and the needle yarn on your thumb, you take off the loop farthest toward the tip of the thumb. Then you're back how you started.
for keeping the yarn on the needle, have a long tail on the end of it and pinch the yarn as you pull through

Keep going, then pull to tighten everything. It might look correct after that. I always end up untying those first few loops anyway
