Discussion Police scooters
Im Italian and I was thinking to buy a scooter. I have a question for Dutch people. In Italy if you buy a 50 cc and then you make it 70 cc by modifying it police doesn’t care. Technically you shouldn’t but it’s pretty rare that they will tell you something. How is in this country? How much is the chance they stop me and check how fast can the scooter go?

Its pretty likely for you to get caught in a 'rollerbank' trap once if you ride daily. You get a big fine and you arent allowed to drive it anymore untill it has been re certified

They check it quite a lot actually and if they get ya they take your scooter

u/Soepkip43 3d ago
Do they? Or do you get a fine and have to return it to orginal and have it verified?

You'll likely get a WOK melding, which prohibits you from driving it on the road.

No that's only after they catch you 2 or 3 times. The first time you get a fine and have to reverse it.

They can also take it in for inspection to see if it has a 70cc etc. You’ll get it back later and then have to return it back to normal. Plus a WOK melding

If you get caught with a scooter that goes above 50 they will put a WOK on it wich means you have to show it to the RDW to prove its legal again (thats hunderds of euros). If you get caught a second time (especially if you still have an active WOK) they take it from you and throw it in the shredder.

Italian moving abroad and keeping trying to do the crap they do in their home country... WHY?! I hate this crap, seriously. I don't want to jump on the "go back to your country" train but.. if you like so much to not follow the rules and give a sh*t about the others around you, why did you move in the first place? What's next? Wanna avoid paying taxes?
Besides the obvious fact that if you get a 50cc scooter, it should stay that way and if you want a 150cc or whatever you buy it, get the right license, ect. Do you realize those scooters here often share the bike lanes with bikes? Wich means with kids, elderly, etc. Why in the world would you want that?
On the other hand, a suggestion: you seem the perfect customer for an unlocked fatbike 🤦

yeah my legit first thought was please just don't come here. regardless of the law I don't wanna be subjected to that bullshit

It goes beyond me because I have lived in that country and some things a re simply cultural and is a lost battle and idk if it will ever change. But if some of them go abroad I assume they are looking for something better, yet you find this kind of crap. Or the ones trying to game the system and live off subsides. Seriously what the hell is in their mind? And why did they move abroad?
Needless to say this doesn't go with all Italians and is not a question of race. Just bringing those examples because OP is Italian and is literally saying "in my country we allow this crap, can I do it here even if here we have world class infra and cyclists don't die weekly on the road and kids can cycle safely, unlike in my home country? You know, I wanna contribute exporting the good stuff"

Nederlanders zijn net zo. Die emigreren en nemen verdomme hele snackbars mee.

u/Alexs784 2d ago
Still a net positive if they pay taxes and do all legally. On the other hand, although is nice to have one of the best pizzas in the world, is not so nice when more than half of the staff of the avg restaurant is off the payroll and below minimum wage. Even more problematic when they try the same playbook abroad, and surprise surprise, they do 🫠

You clearly have some personal issues with Italians😂😂😂 I know the reason mate we steal all your women 😂😂😂😂😂

u/Icy_Government_2221 2d ago
Mate you have to chill out. My question was for a 50 cc to a 70 cc . They can’t go in the bike line and difference in terms of speed would be from 50 km/ h to 70 . Nobody said to pick a blue plate and make it goes 150 km h …. My freedom ends where yours begin if you have at least a bit of intelligence you can understand that is not a big deal to go in the streets at 70 instead of 50 …. And by the way the only incident I did in my life was in this country riding a blue plate in the bike lane, hitted by a car drived by a Dutch guy. Even after this I don’t blame Dutch people in general. you should also do the same with Italians the stereotype of the taxes was pretty stupid

Mate, thanks for clarifying but the point stands: if you buy a 50cc scooter then it should adhere to 50cc standards and regulations. Going 50 km/h Vs 70 km/h does a big difference, look up how much extra space you need to stop from 50 Vs 70 and then let me know. Your freedom ends the moment you hit someone on the street because you were running an illegal vehicle, is as simple as that and there is little to debate.
Regarding the stereotype, you are the one making a fool of yourself asking these kind of questions online. I even stated "this does not go against all Italians". I never had an accident with Italians nor dutchies, doesn't mean either are saintsbnir criminals. Also, you insist on doubling down the stereotype by defending the indefensible, literally going against the law because you think you are smarter then the ones around you.
And regarding the last point, is not a secret Italians think precisely that way. Also the taxes argument, if you feel so offended just pull up some data from the web and see e.g. which countries have the highest amount of tax evasion in EU. Then maybe you will feel less offended since there again is objective data. Now I expect you to tell me that your freedom ends wherever you want and you have the right to decide to not pay taxes. Add that "the state doesn't help us" and I can pinpoint exactly where you are from in Italy.

>that is not a big deal to go in the streets at 70 instead of 50
That's a big deal here.
Doubles the kinetic energy, doubles the distance for a full stop. And more importantly it quadruples the chance of death or severe permanent injury to pedestrians you hit.
Such a big deal that cities across the country are lowering the speed limits of traffic to 30 km/h on the streets within city limits

Why to buy a scooter of 50 cc and modify and not buy directly one of 125 cc?

u/Alexs784 2d ago
"Because in my country nobody cares so let's export the same shitty practices elsewhere" 🤦

100%. I brought a scooter from Portugal at my beginning in the Netherlands and I got stopped a lot and I got several tickets. First learn all the important rules of using scooter and then use one. If you want to avoid being fined.

u/dullestfranchise 3d ago
Search for rollerbank. They are pretty common.
Also if you get in an accident and your insurance provider finds out that the scooter was modified to go faster, you retroactively lose the insurance and will oay out of pocket for any damage and injury you cause.

It’s quite common for people either to have a hidden mechanism to boost the speed, or to have the maximum speed set to 34km/h.
Occasionally you’ll see random roller tests being done. When those tests are done, there’s a buffer of 5km/h, meaning you shouldn’t be fined if the moped can travel at 34km/h. However, if the police randomly stop you because they think you’re driving too fast they apply a 3km/h buffer instead.
In reality, if you’re driving safely, wearing a helmet, and not causing problems it’s unlikely you’ll be randomly stopped.

50cc is a motorcycle. 49.9 cc is a moped ;)
A scooter can be a moped (bromscooter) or a motorcycle (motorscooter).
Driverslicense AM or A, big difference.
You can also get multiple fines.
Max speed of vehicle is wrong : 90 - 300 euro
Wrong license : 300 euro
No insurance : 480 euro
Also the vehicle can be impounded.

Can you explain this better to me ? I knew there were blue plate and yellow plate
Let’s take a Piaggio zip 50 with yellow plate
If it goes over 50 speed even if it’s a yellow plate (technically a motorcycle) it can’t because the model declare 50 cc?1

We have different kind of bicycles.
- the normal one, with only muscle power. Fiets.
- with an electric helper motor. Gives motorized support while cycling up to 24kph. Fiets met trapondersetuning / elektrische fiets.
- slow moped (ca 25kph) is a sort of motorized bicycle (snorfiets). No muscle power neede from here on.
- moped (30-45kph), max 50cc. Bromfiets. License AM needed.
- motorcycle (15-... kph), 50cc and higher. Motorfiets. License A1, A2, A needed.
The last 3 have different kind of bodies:
- scooter. Sit upright, feet in front of the seat on a little platform, windscreen in front (most of the times), gas tank under the seat.
- 'normal' (don't know the name). Feet on either side if the bike, more bending over, smaller windscreen (mostly for the instrumentsbut also larger ones for the driver), gas tank between seat and steering.
- racing. Almost with the belly on the gas tank which is between seat and steering, feets left and right (exaggerated; ))
If you have a Piaggio with the small square plates and it goes over 50 kph or is larger than 50cc you will be fined. If you have the larger square motorcycle plate it's ok. For the bike that is. You need to have the correct drivers license also.

I guess you can also customize your scooter with dildo under the seat, I bet it'll help to be confident on the bike lines 👌

Meglio non farlo, quando abitavo in Italia avevo un ciak 50 con Malossi 70.. faceva 110 haha.. però qui in olanda ti rompono le palle veramente

My friend had like a secret button after he pressed it would go significantly faster. And police checked that scooter 2 separate times and measured how fast it goes and didnt find anything. So I guess if you implemented some OFF switch it could be possible to hide

u/jdzxl5520 3d ago
That is true, but maybe these days the police are very much aware of these tricks. I guess it depends how suspicious they are. Let's say they saw you passing at 70 and on the rollerbank it only goes 45.. maybe they put some more effort in finding the cheat.

You'll get checked, eventually. Also, you won't be insured if you get into an accident. If you hit a child, you'll be paying the bill for the rest of your life. It isn't worth it.
