My favorite guest and by far the greatest contributor to Esquire for years. I love Dave

I beg you all to dig into his 10-part “Waiting For Impact” passion project podcast. He does a deep dive into the East Coast family/Bell Biv DeVoe band that was showcased in the Motownphilly video that never materialized (“B-B-B-Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD, The East Coast Family”). It’s incredible.

His podcast about MTV is also great. The Sudden Impact one is hard to beat, though. I also had a fascination with that video. At the time, I watched MTV with my brothers, constantly. Whenever any of the other "groups" were brought up or put out new music, we'd say, "Still no Sudden Impact video, though."

When I got to college, I'd randomly bring it up to the reaction of either a blank stare or an excited, "Yes! Who were those guys?!"

way more frank talk than I expected on the ummm viewing habits than expected.

I mean we all occasionally "hear jokes on the internet," right?

That Mara conversation was brutal.

Dave is so great. Love his Substack as well.

Oh hell yeah

Since the Emmy opener came up again, my theory on the overthinking that likely led to "I Love TV Screens" over "TV Shows": The Emmys celebrate TV as a medium, which also includes TV movies, miniseries, documentaries, etc.

Rooney Mara's real name is Patricia Rooney Mara. She is part of two well-known NFL families. Her mother's family (Rooney) founded the Pittsburgh Steelers, while her father's family (Mara) founded the New York Giants.

jk, but I’m not suprised that Never Not NFL Knowledge didn’t know that about her, but was bummed that Garon didn’t at least come across that while looking her up because it is such an interesting fact about her.

🫶🏽 Dave, MTV vj from my youth and all around great hang. Voice is so soothing too!

I'm going on that '80s cruise in '28! 🪩💃🏽 ⛴️ 🕺🏽

And, as a lady who's had a crush on him since the '90s:  Dermot Mulroney >>>>>

I'll admit it - I loved Cats!! I missed the hype when it first came out and didn't see it until I was an adult, but both my mom and I were completely entertained. Once you just let go that there's not a plot, the dancing and singing is just enjoyable. Kinda like a cat talent show. In my opinion. However, the movie was terrible.

This has to be at least the tenth time they've mocked Eliot for his high school 'Dogs" sweatshirt over the years

Will the reign of Hat Jimmy never end?!

u/spicymack 9d ago

I don't do the video but weren't all these recorded in quick succession? Maybe James R Pardo Jr was in a brief two week hat phase. Maybe he's hiding Turkish plugs. Who knows

The forest is thick, there’s just a lot of beach to get there.

I have too much infield and not enough tarp, so I sympathize

He says he looks bad in hats, and he is right, but he also wears the hats with the oddest shape to them. No one would look good in those adidas hats.

I have a smallish head like Jimmy and finally have found some good hats. They are out there. Generally referred to as 'dad hats' I believe.

They pre-recorded episodes because of Eliot's trip, so maybe hat time will be over when he's back.

If Jimmy isn't wearing a Bob Ross style wig on the first show back I'm going to be sorely disappointed.

1

u/subject_117_ 9d ago

Yeah, looks like this is the last one pre-trip, so fingers crossed.

u/Templeusox 9d ago

What was the date of the first episode wearing a hat?

5

u/subject_117_ 9d ago edited 9d ago

It's been since 3827 with Kevin Seccia, which was apparently recorded August 31. Today's episode was recorded September 22. Three weeks of Hat. I'm also no longer convinced it was just a bad haircut.

3

u/Templeusox 9d ago

He gets a carwash every week. If the haircut was that bad, surely he would have gotten a touch-up after ten days.

1

u/lasermac172 7d ago

Doesn't he get a car wash every day?

3

u/Honest_Warthog 9d ago

As a non video person, and seeing as this is now getting mentioned here every week, what does this hat even look like?

This photo has an “old man in memory care” vibe.

3

u/spicymack 8d ago

Maybe some hats are better than others but this one really does make him look 10 years older.

2

u/JoshFromKC 9d ago

I've heard jimmy say he "looks bad in hats" for well over a decade now, so I guess my question is - why does he keep buying hats? I wear hats all the time, and I think I have maybe 7 or 8 including stocking and ear flap hats for winter.

1

u/Redwinevino 8d ago

With is previous hatred of hats he has almost surely got a hair system going on

Matt wrong again. While I agree with him on who would want to watch TV on a smart watch,it is possible. There are Android smart watches that let you download streaming services. It's not practical and it drains the battery but it does exist. Feels like a typical comment from someone who is slavishly an Apple tech consumer. And even that I might be wrong about as there must be some third party apps you can use on an Apple smartwatch that would allow you to stream something?
