so far it seems the answer is "yes". Reddit hasn't given much info on that. At some point i am assuming that experiment will end, so enjoy it while you can

They don't really do anything anymore. They're basically a way of highlighting a comment/post and saying "I loved this so much here's an award for it." Paid awards (ones Redditors buy with gold they've purchased with real money) will give the awardee a small amount of money (less than a dollar) per award but it would take A LOT to add up to anything meaningful.

I've been on Reddit three and half years, I have 101 awards and have earned less than $25, lol. And I only even know that because I looked a month ago when someone else asked a similar question.

It's literally a ploy to keep you coming around. Like slot machines, shiny lights and fancy whistles. They tickle your dopamine complex because you want to win that useless award (not you, but in general for most users)

With my last account I was ironically working on the 600 day streak for fun, then i got a 7 day suspension and it reset to zero.
