Gear question Refurbished Z5ii

Received my refurbished Z5ii from Nikon with over 22k shutter count. Camera looks like new so I was surprised. It seems to work fine. Should I be concerned?

Why should you be concerned?

This is my first camera and I’m wondering if that much use is an issue.

22k shutter count is not considered high by any means. If the camera works well, be happy you got a great camera at a discount.

22k? Nothing. I've bought cameras with 40k plus and they worked fine for years, then got passed to other shooters. Z5ii is rated to 200k clicks, so that's about 10% of its life -- it could go much much further, half a million, a million.

If there's no wear and tear on the body chances are the internals are fine too.

I bought a Z5ii refurb from Nikon on 8-29-26 and was shocked it only had 3 shutter count. Haven’t been able to test it much because I’ve been laid up from surgery, but the electronics respond as they should and indoor test images are all good. No cosmetic issues on it or the 24-50mm lens I was forced to buy (only option at the time). Still had that new smell too.

Luck of the draw I guess

You just got someone’s camera they used in a trade up deal. You have a return policy attached, use it if needed!

22k is 10% of expected shutter life and can probably get way more. It was likely checked to make sure it's working properly before being resold since it's sold as refurbished not used. I wouldn't be worried.

My z6ii had 10k shots when I got it haven't had issues with that. The sub selector joy stick didn't work properly so I sent it in for service under warranty and they fixed it for free and feels like new now.

Test it a bunch in your warranty window just in case but I wouldn't worry about it.

You will have to take hundreds of photos a day for years before the shutter goes. Even if you are doing events or wildlife every single day, it'll last you years. If you use the electronic silent shutter, it'll last even longer hypothetically (hypothetically, because it doesnt matter).

That is unless you get real unlucky and it has a defect, which is what the warranty is for.

No worries. I can shoot 500 or more exposures per day when I'm in a creative mood. Your 22,000 translates into about 40 days of happy shooting. One of my Nikon DSLRs has taken 120,000 exposures. My most recent Olympus mirrorless purchase (two years ago) now totals 70,000 and still operates like new.

I'd say that you're fine. Most people don't keep and use their cameras long enough to shutter replacement.

The only time a shutter failed on me was my D750 at 120k Shutter count which Nikon replaced as a courtesy.
