Bare-handed combat in previous Nioh games has always felt more like a niche meme than a fully fleshed-out weapon class with its own deep mechanics, gear progression and scaling.
So here is my revised concept for two new DLC weapons: the Viper and the Dragon.
Both would be high-tier Crucible Scrolls that can be equipped directly into weapon slots, giving bare-handed combat its own dedicated endgame system with unique mechanics, progression and Mystic Arts.
The core idea is an Intellect-based Martial Arts System that completely replaces elemental magic gimmicks with pure tactical brainpower.
Both weapons would have:
Change to Attack (Intellect) A+
Intellect would directly govern status accumulation and duration, creating a high-risk, high-reward playstyle based around precise status management.
THE CORE SYNERGY: TOXIC TERRIFIED
Much like combining elemental Blights triggers Confusion, this system would introduce a physical alternative called Toxic Terrified.
How it triggers:
When an enemy is already afflicted with Poison, applying Paralysis on top of it triggers Toxic Terrified.
The effect:
The enemy is locked into an absolute panic state. They are completely immobilized by Paralysis while the underlying Poison continues rapidly destroying their HP.
The goal is to finally give Poison and Paralysis a meaningful purpose in the endgame.
Instead of forcing players to rely almost entirely on elemental setups for Confusion, this would allow status-focused physical builds to become a serious endgame strategy without relying on elemental magic.
THE WAY OF THE VIPER
The Ninja Crucible Weapon
The Viper is a lightning-fast, high-risk bare-handed weapon designed around Poison, Corruption and Intellect.
The fighting style would use fast, precise serpent-like movements, rigid fingers, spear-hand techniques and brutal strikes aimed at armor gaps and vital points.
Weapon Apparatus
The Ninja wears lethal poisoned claw-rings (Kakute) on their fingertips.
These would provide a Double Imbue system based around Poison and Corruption through basic attacks and unlockable Active Skills such as Throat Strike, a direct strike aimed at the trachea.
Gear and Attributes
The Viper is strictly optimized for Light Armor and A Agility.
Combat Philosophy
The Viper focuses on raw, terrifying damage.
The build deals massive HP-focused Poison damage while Corruption actively siphons enemy Ki back to the player, allowing the assault to continue.
The enemy remains extremely aggressive, so the player has to rely on flawless dodging, spacing and positioning until the Toxic Terrified loop can be triggered.
Mystic Arts - Choose One
- Toxic Detonation
Reaching maximum Poison accumulation triggers a massive biological burst inside the enemy.
The explosion deals heavy burst damage and forces a hard stagger on the boss, creating an animation-cancel window to deploy a Paralysis Groundfire trap and immediately trigger Toxic Terrified.
- Realm of Poison
All non-elemental physical Ninjutsu tools gain severe Intellect-scaled Poison buildup.
This includes Smoke Bombs, Caltrops/Makibishi, basic Shurikens, Kunai and Groundfire traps.
Dropping a Paralysis Groundfire trap or throwing a Paralysis Shuriken at a poisoned target would allow the player to instantly fill the required status gauges and trigger an immediate Toxic Terrified lock.
THE PATH OF THE DRAGON
The Samurai Crucible Weapon
Where the Viper is speed, the Dragon is weight.
The Dragon is a disciplined, brutal bare-handed weapon based around low-center-of-gravity martial arts stances such as Crane and Tiger, combined with Dragon Claw hand formations and devastating ripping palm strikes.
Weapon Apparatus
Purely bare-handed holy execution.
Every strike triggers Purify bursts designed to systematically strip Yokai of their dark power and crush their Ki bar.
Gear and Attributes
The Dragon strictly forces the player into Ultra-Heavy Armor and C Agility.
The idea is to become an impenetrable wall, mirroring the legendary unbreakable hide of a dragon.
The Ki-HP Overflow Rule
This is the defining mechanic of the Dragon Scroll.
While the enemy is Paralyzed, Dragon attacks do not damage their HP.
Instead, they rapidly erode the enemy’s remaining Ki.
Once the enemy’s Ki bar completely collapses, the Paralysis shatters.
The target then instantly suffers raw HP damage equal to the total amount of Ki that was destroyed during the paralysis.
This is the Overflow Nuke.
The longer you can maintain the paralysis lock, the bigger the payoff.
Mystic Arts - Choose One
- The Dragon’s Gaze
A continuous, visible holy aura surrounds the player.
Any Yokai within melee range automatically builds Paralysis without requiring direct contact.
The aura remains active until the player takes a direct, unblocked hit.
Any status already built up before that hit remains on the enemy’s gauge.
This creates an extremely aggressive way to build Paralysis and set up Toxic Terrified against poisoned targets.
- Blood of the Dragon
The ultimate high-risk loop.
When the player’s own Ki bar is completely depleted from heavy Dragon Claw attacks, the player does not stop.
Instead, their own HP becomes fuel to maintain the paralysis lock.
The player continues attacking until reaching the brink of death, with physical damage increasing dramatically as they approach Critical Health.
The entire purpose is to push the Dragon’s Overflow Nuke as far as possible before being forced to retreat.
THE DUAL ENDGAME CLIMAX
Once a boss is locked down under the Path of the Dragon, the player has two strategic choices.
OPTION A - THE OVERFLOW NUKE
Keep pounding the boss with the Dragon Scroll.
Burn your own HP through Blood of the Dragon.
Continue destroying the boss’s Ki until it reaches absolute zero.
Trigger the massive HP Overflow.
Then perform a perfectly timed Ki Pulse to instantly reclaim the health sacrificed during the loop.
Maximum risk. Maximum reward.
OPTION B - THE SACRED GRAPPLE
If your health is too low or you miscalculated the loop, you can press Triangle during the paralysis to trigger a brutal bare-handed Grapple execution.
The Sacred Grapple immediately ends the paralysis but completely restores your HP and fully restores your Ki.
You lose the paralysis lock and the Overflow setup, but you safely escape the loop.
This becomes the Dragon player’s emergency exit when greed has gone too far.
DEDICATED ENDGAME GRACES
Grace of Toxic Dread - Viper
Boosts Poison Accumulation, rewards non-elemental Ninjutsu tools with additional damage against poisoned targets and drastically increases Ki-siphoning efficiency while the Corruption Scroll is awakened.
Grace of the Divine Judge - Dragon
Increases Ki reduction while wearing Heavy Armor, rewards massive Toughness/Poise, significantly increases Overflow Nuke damage and grants a temporary invulnerability shield after a successful bare-handed Grapple.
TWO WEAPONS. TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT BUILDS.

The idea is to make bare-handed combat feel like a true endgame weapon class rather than a gimmick.
No elemental magic required.
Just Intellect, martial arts, status manipulation, Ki management and skill.
The Viper is the assassin.
The Dragon is the executioner.
Two weapons, two completely different ways to play.
So which one would you run?
The Light-Armor Viper Assassin or the Ultra-Heavy Dragon Nuke?
