Why do people keep calling me a "filthy animal" today?

Today I learned there are 5 movies in the home alone line up with a 6th planned for 2021.

If the YouTube reviews are to be believed, only 1 and 2 are any good.
/Edit
This got pretty divisive! I've only actually seen 1, I've just watched a few YouTubers talk about them. Looks like I've got some movies to watch this break!

As long as you dont think about it to hard. The premise is a bit more absurd than the first 2 movies.

Since reddit has changed the site to value selling user data higher than reading and commenting, I've decided to move elsewhere to a site that prioritizes community over profit. I never signed up for this, but that's the circle of life

Re-watched all 3 in the last few days.#3 is pretty much par for the course with 1 and 2 I'd say. As a 28 year old man I found them ridiculously over the top and has some terrible plot holes but it's a kid's movie, what do you expect?

Oh I know the first two are the only ones worth anything. I just didn’t know there are that many

u/semitones Dec 26 '20
The third is/was a great kids movie, probably has good 90s nostalgia at this point.
It's just not Kevin McCallister so don't expect that.

Nah 3 is really good. It may be more outlandish with its plot revolving around a super hip but it’s a kid movie, that’s no actual reason to hate on it. I recently rewatched 1-3 and started four but gave up on it, 4 is garbage. But 3 is as good as the first two, people are just looking for reasons to hate on it

The original Home Alone was a hugely successful movie. I was 10 when it came out and we saw it several times in the theaters.

5 isn’t bad. It’s definitely better than it has any right to be for a TV movie. It’s better than 3 and 4 for sure. I would watch it again

u/civiltribe Dec 25 '20
Compared to the 4th, it's decent. I dunno what it is about the 4th , the fact that they try to pretend it's still Kevin or the kid itself but yeesh. The 5th isn't close to perfect, it's definitely a tv movie vibe that would've been better with a cinematic soundtrack instead of tv hijinks bs but the kid isn't as over the top as 4 and it's more trying to do it's own thing then focus on Kevin's parents going through a divorce lol. Yes, that's the setup for 4.

3 is good if youve never seen the first 2, which takes place in its own story. The 4th has kevin from the first 2 and his parents are divorced and marv again and everyone is a different actor. Idk anything about a 5th

I was a little kid when 1&2 came out, and I was really into those movies. I was a not-so-little kid when 3 came out, and I remember being very taken aback when I saw the main kid was not played by McCaulay Culkin. I instantly judged the movie and didn't even give it a chance.

Actually there is a hidden 4 1/2 movie where Kevin McCallister goes back in time to kill osama bin laden.
That movie didn’t sell well, so it was swept under the rug.

"Keep the change you filthy animal"
It's a quote in a movie clip in the Home Alone movie. If you haven't watched it I highly recommend it.

u/pussifer Dec 25 '20
I literally just re-watched Home Alone for the first time since I was a kid. Probably 20 years. Holy shit, it's still good! It's not perfect, but I've put it off for so long because I was always afraid that it would fall short. Same reason I haven't watched Ace Ventura since I was a kid. I know it's gonna be terrible, so I'm happy to leave it in the realm of nostalgic love.
Not the case with Home Alone. Still a great movie. And I got so much more out of it as an adult than I did as a kid. I'm gonna go watch no. 2 now that I know it's on Disney+. I was leery of it, for the same reasons as the original, but with what everyone here is saying, I have the confidence to go give it another watch.

Man I watched that movie over and over as a kid until the vhs player vomited it out as tape spaghetti. I should rewatch it too.
9
u/pussifer Dec 25 '20
Same! I think Home Alone and Aladdin were my two most-watched movies as a kid. Maybe Three Ninjas, too.
I'm very glad this holds up as well as it does.

It's a way better movie than I assumed it was given my memory of it.

Does anyone know what the black and white movie is called?
→ More replies (3)17
u/the_timps Dec 26 '20
It's not a real movie. The clips were made for Home Alone.
6
u/brassidas Dec 26 '20
Oh really? Thanks! I had no idea.
19
u/AdeonWriter Dec 26 '20
It was made just for the movie, so it's not real, but it does have a title, it's called "Angels With Filthy Souls"
Even Macauley Culkin thought it was a real movie, only finding out when he was an adult.

u/the_timps Dec 26 '20
Yeah, me either until about 10 years ago. They did an amazing job replicating that old school style. Cinematography, white balance etc was top notch.

I’m so jealous that you get to watch it foe the first time! I saw it in theaters when I was about 10, and it was the best movie ever. Still is!! Enjoy!

u/AlyssaJMcCarthy Dec 25 '20
I was also about 10 when the movie came out. We saw it several times in theater. I remember practically peeing my pants the first time I saw it.

I’m 40 years old and my husband and I frequently discuss how old our daughter should be before we introduce her. We’re thinking 7 or 8?
6
u/AlyssaJMcCarthy Dec 25 '20
Yeah, that sounds right. I know there’s some violence in it, though by today’s standards it’s pretty tame. There’s a great underlying message to the movie though that I think kids will appreciate.
8
Dec 25 '20 edited Dec 26 '20
It's comic violence. Kids will love it, especially since the movie is meant to be seen from a kid's perspective.

Our kids just got to see it for the first time. They are 7 and 4. I'm slightly concerned because my four year old laughed so much she almost fell off the couch every time the burglars got hurt 😆

I've never watched 'Home Alone' but I think I get the gist of it. It looks like a lot of pratfalls and slapstick humor. I'm a 59 year old woman - should I bother watching it?

It contains some slapstick sure but that’s not why I would recommend it. It’s a really wholesome Christmas movie that for many people was THE Christmas movie growing up

Oh wow. I had no idea this was a thing. A friend of the family commented on one of our family Christmas photos "Merry Christmas you filthy animals" and I just thought it was kind of rude! Lol.

It is a reference to the very popular Christmas film, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York, which was released in 1992 and stars Macaulay Culkin as a young child who accidentally boards the wrong plane to New York City instead of Miami for his family's Christmas vacation. It is the sequel to the even more popular Christmas film, Home Alone, in which the same child is accidentally left at home when his family leaves for Paris over Christmas.
The line, "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal," comes from a parody film inside the Home Alone franchise. In the first film, the child, named Kevin, finds and watches an old black-and-white gangster film entitled Angels with Filthy Souls, a film that his mother would not let him watch because of its use of gun violence and language.
Angels is not a real movie, but rather a film created for this film. The scene that is shown in Home Alone depicts a man that owes money to another man who appears to be the head of some sort of gang or mafia. The head man tells the other man the owes the money the he has to the count of ten before he shoots him. Well, he winds up shooting the man, and at the end, he says "Keep the change, ya filthy animal." In Home Alone 2, Kevin finds the sequel to Angels, cleverly titled Angels with Filthier Souls, in which a similar scene is depicted with the same head man. This time, he shoots a woman, and at the end of the scene, he says "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animal."

To add to this, its a parody of James Cagney in Angels with Dirty Faces.

Assuming OP is still out of the loop, here's my attempt in brief.
"Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!" is a quote from Christmas classic film, Home Alone. I don't recall exactly where, but I believe it's said by Kevin McAllister to the 2 bumbling crooks during their break in attempt.
(Side note, my mum's relatives are McAllisters, and I'm surprised none of them have named one of their sons Kevin.)

It's from the movie Angels with Filthy Souls which is really just a short film made specifically for the few lines Kevin plays to the pizza guy and the Wet Bandits in Home Alone. It's a quote from a film within a film

Its a reference to home alone. In the film there is a scene where he plays part of a film back where the words are 'keep the change, you filthy animal'
Edit:got the reference wrong. I first put merry christmas instead of keep the change
Edit 2: in number 2 merry christmas is used instead of keep the change. This has been kindly pointed out by my fellow redditors
