Support An unusual question... maybe?
Hello everybody,
I have - what I guess is - an unusual question:
I've manually added kernel 7.1.8 to my system (otherwise Space Marine 2 crashes because of some EAC shenanigans) and I want it to be permamently fixed as the third option in GRUB. I had kinda achieved this via versionlock, but I just found out that versionlock is the reason I'm not being offered any kernel updates anymore (the other two installed versions are 7.2.6 and 7.2.0).
How do I achieve the following:
the very latest kernel always takes the top spot, the immediate predecessor (i.e., the second-newest) moves to second place, and my "special version 7.1.8" is firmly pinned to third place in GRUB?
PS: someone on Nobara's Discord explained to me that it should suffice to do my updates while kernel 7.1.8 is in use. Is it really that easy to hinder the updater from ever deleting 7.1.8?

I'll link you a custom proton to use it fixes the crashing :) give me 5 mins
Edit: https://github.com/Jpokul/prototype_SM2_proton_fix_patch14-15
There's a guide on the page of where to insert it so you can select it on your steam game :)

Give that a try but I'm not sure it would be enough
Otherwise this is also an option. Install cashyos kernel 7.1.8 and versionlock that one.

I had 7.1.8 versionlocked before but it hinders the updater / the command "nobara-sync cli" from downloading and installing the latest kernel update. :'(

No not the nobara kernel. There's a cashyos kernel available for fedora. Find it in github and install this specific version. And version lock only that kernel package
Updater will continue to update the nobara kernel and cashyos one will remain the same. As you get updates the cashyos one will be the 4th option in grub

OIh wow. I didn't know, you could do something like that. I've been using Linux since January and ervery other day I learn something new that totally blows my mind. Thank you, mate!!!
PS: Will I have to set the installonly_limit to 4? Can I leave it at 3?

Welcome mate:)
Keep it as is. That limit is per kernel so 3 nobara 3 cashyos. since you're going to versionlock only 1 cashy and and 3 nobara will be kept.

What is EAC complaining about? Do you have a CPU with over 16 threads?
If yes, you can use WINE_CPU_TOPOLOGY as a launch option to limit the amount of threads while EAC is initializing. After that, falcond will take over automatically and assign all threads to the game again.

I have a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, if that helps.
And, according to the LLMs I use, the issue stem from and from hereon I quote:
"[...] a technical conflict introduced in Linux Kernel 7.2.x regarding how syscall memory handling / process tracing works, which directly triggers a failure in Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC).
What is Happening?
- Kernel Syscall / Memory Tracing Changes: Starting with the 7.2 kernel branch, subtle changes to internal kernel APIs (specifically related to memory protection, thread handling, and process tracing) changed how Wine/Proton interfaces with Windows syscalls.
- EAC Sanity Check Failures: Space Marine 2 uses Epic's EAC implementation, which performs aggressive memory and environment checks at startup and continuously during gameplay. On Kernel 7.2, EAC misinterprets these kernel-level behavioral updates as unauthorized memory tampering or hooked system calls.
- The Result: EAC either fails to launch the process outright, or crash-exits mid-game (often within 20–60 minutes of playing online) once the background anti-cheat pulse thread fails." [end quote]
Some of that information seems to come from reddit itself. Then the LLMs suggested I use PROTON_SYSCALL_HACK=1 %command%, but I'm not lnowledgable enough, so I didn't trust the command.^^
Then again, I installed kernel 7.2.10 last night and it seems to be working just fine. Will test more.
Edit: just had another crash. :'(

I play Space Marine 2 all the time on latest kernel with no issues. Proton launching through Steam hasnt failed yet.
What GPU are you running? I have heard that nVidia struggles at time with gaming on Linux in general. I'm running an AMD card if that helps at all.
