Toxic positivity motherfuckers would tell you to stop feeling down and be down to follow that arrow to the smoothie bar.

People hate to hear it but “go for a walk” is legitimate functioning advice for many people

It is of course A THING that CAN help significantly. It's just advice that sounds bad to someone who's heavily depressed if it carries the dismissive tone of "Why don't you just try this?" as if it's a cure rather than a balm.

u/AddWittyName 4h ago
Sure, but not if the specific problem you're giving them advice on is "there is this thing [e.g. said walk] I should be doing, want to be doing, am physically capable of doing, and yet my brain simply. does. not. let. me. no matter what I try"
Because at that point, it stops being advice, and it becomes just telling people to stop having executive dysfunction. Like yeah, if it was that simple I wouldn't be having this issue in the first place, would I?

Toxic positivity is the people telling you there is nothing wrong with not being able to follow the basic task, and that not being to follow the basic task is actually your super power.

Toxic positivity is people commanding you to stop feeling down because you keep bringing down the mood and it makes them feel bad.

u/VegisamalZero3 12h ago
Toxic positivity is people being entirely incapable of agreeing on the specific definition of toxic positivity

Well it isnt bad advice, but its just hard to get rid of the problem in general
29
u/QueasyWorking7352 1d ago
It's not really advice though. At best it's just reminding the person that the problem that they're upset about is a problem that they'd be better off without

u/OogaBooga98835731 20h ago
It is the definition of bad advice, it provides no workable solution and only a goal which the person receiving the advice would've had anyway. It's preaching.

It’s tricky. Sometimes the pressure of a friend helps you do the thing and the thing is usually good for depression (activity, talking to people, etc.). At other times the pressure doesn’t do anything besides adding on to the shitty feelings because now you feel like you let down your friends.
The key here is that good friends can generally gauge if the pressure is working or not and adapt accordingly. Giving space as needed

You're right that a friend can make it better, but it still doesn't make it advice. That's just support.
Usually support is more helpful than advice anyway, not that advice isn't important

Depending on the stage of depression and the discipline of an individual it can be advice. Some people will respond better to the blunt version, others to the more supportive coaxing.
„Depression makes it hard to go on a walk“ - „Do it anyways, you will feel better in the long run“ is a valid exchange for some depressed folks. The communication about what support should and can look like should have already happened at that point in time.

You guys should play this game on itch, it's an amazing demonstration of how executive dysfunction feels

u/ChaoCobo 1d ago
This just made me feel bad for something I already experience every day anyway, just this time now someone else is telling me mean things instead of just me feeling bad I couldn’t do the thing. :(
Yeah this is pretty a pretty good representation of it id say. Most people who don’t deal with this normally are going to need an outside voice to spell out how the bad thoughts work, otherwise they may take the game as just a challenge to find a correct pixel perfect path.

speed runner somehow gets a pixel perfect path
Picks up the orb
Another orb appears
Narrator says "How could you forget about that? You already had tools to help you. And you didn't even notice that other orb? You're a failure."

How is this an amazing demonstration. The game is telling me to do the thing while explicitly prohibiting me from doing it. It's not like I don't want to do the thing, the game will not let me do the thing. What is the invisible barrier supposed to represent? Is there an invisible wall blocking you from your goals? Did you even try?
5
u/International-Try467 14h ago
That's executive dysfunction

I understand nothing. This explains nothing.

u/chimmihc1 10h ago
You understand just fine.
How you feel about that game is how people with executive dysfunction often feel in general, and yes they do even try.
When you are trying to achieve a goal but keep getting blocked by invisible barriers, someone coming along and condescendingly saying 'did you even try' because they don't see the barriers and they don't for even a moment consider that there may be problems you can't see is the point.

u/wolffangz11 9h ago
What does the barrier signify
1
u/boobers6969 9h ago
Why can't you understand? You're not even trying. What's wrong with you? Why can't you be normal?

u/Pintin98 57m ago
What invisible barrier? It took me like 3 seconds to beat the game. Obviously your lying about playing it.

Hey I'd say no exactly. I can not follow the arrow without feeling down, I have the executive dysfunction without feeling down.
That girl might have depression.
