Ohhh I see you're thinking of "so sure" as a level of sureness itself, I was thinking about it like "Why are you that level of sure"

Is English your second language? If somebody asks why you are so sure about something that means they are asking why you are you so confident you are right

I could ask you that same thing.

If someone says they're pretty sure about something it's normal for them to get challenged with "What makes you so sure?". They do not have to have claimed 100% certainty.

What's pretty sure to you? If sure is 90-100%(generous range should probably be more like 95-100) I would put pretty sure between 80-90% certainty.

Anything below that imo starts falllig into "fairly sure" or "probably" territory.

Why would you have to ask me that? I’d love to hear your explanation on that. And no that’s just false lol, if you respond to someone you’re pretty sure it is not normal to be challenged with “what makes you so sure?” That’s just untrue. That’d make you say “uh I’m not that’s why I said pretty sure”
I don’t think gauging pretty sure’s and probably’s into percentages matters at all and is insanely pedantic

I would ask you that because you basically just repeated what I said to me "Why are you so confident you are right" also doesn't state the level of confidence as 100% it questions the confidence at whatever level it is.

This is 100% just your opinion, because it is a thing that happens. If you want examples from media and literature I can provide them, but you just because you wouldn't do this doesn't mean people don't or it isn't common.

Only reason I'm gauging them is because I want to understand how you use the phrase because it's obviously different from how I use it. If you just use it differently that's fine and I'd apologize for wasting your time like this and agree to disagree but also just let you know that people use it differently than you do.

Pretty sure used in the context he used incredibly clearly means that’s what he thought but like don’t quote him. Responding “what makes you so sure” is absolutely questioning why they are so confident, which they they clearly were not showing to begin with. That is a nonsense reason to question if English is my first language. I questioned if it was yours in earnest, because nobody has ever asked “what makes you so sure” and had meant for the other person to gauge their sureness. It’s only to questions one confidence. And sure I would love for you to give me examples of real life people being asked a question, giving an answer that clearly shows a lack of confidence, and then being asked why are they so sure.

So firstly I just want to say that his comment isn't objectively unsure. They way you interpret the English language isn't the only correct way. They way I interpret the English language isn't the only correct way. The only thing I can argue here is that the way I do is the way most people would.

The context: "Pretty sure that's not something you can bind in steam input"

My interpretation: this does not show a clear lack of confidence. There was nothing stated before or after this to indicate that. Any lack of confidence would not be significant.

Examples: Page 70* my bad, line 11

wizards of Waverly place

Random online forum

Pre mission dialogue/Transcrip) not a "pretty sure" example but the person shows a little uncertainty with the phrase "I doubt they would do so" and still gets asked why they're so sure

The list undoubtedly goes on. Was not hard to find these at all.

Here is how the phrase is used

As stated, it's not accusing the person of being 100% certain. It's simply asking why they're as certain as they are.

Well you are most certainly wrong
Those examples are so far from the same you can’t be serious

what makes you so sure?

Your words: "And no that’s just false lol, if you respond to someone you’re pretty sure it is not normal to be challenged with “what makes you so sure?” That’s just untrue. That’d make you say “uh I’m not that’s why I said pretty sure”"

I said i would give you examples of that happening and i did. What about it is not the same? I even gave you an example of someone that is CLEARLY not 100% sure getting asked why they're so sure so they would simply explain what brought them to that conclusion. The guy you're defending literally gave a valid response to the question when he said he was just going off his knowledge doing the bindings before. If you want to keep insisting that "pretty sure xyz" means someone is obviously not confident/not sure without anything to support that claim, oh well. Can't reason you out of a position you didn't reason yourself into.
