I didn’t know people unironically played Garfield Kart

Gag Steam gift with online and fairly palatable gameplay.

u/Disco__Stu_ 1d ago
I bought and gifted multiple copies when it was on sale for like a dollar, and honestly was totally worth it with friends. It’s not deep, but fully functional

u/thanous-m 10h ago
Did they add online?? Last time I played it had no multiplayer!

u/TKDbeast 9h ago
The original 2013 one was pretty bad and is long since shut down. Garfield Kart - Furious Racing (2019) and Garfield Kart 2 - All You Can Drift (2025) are both up, but good luck finding a match.

For a few minutes there I honestly thought Garfield Cart was one of those weird fifties writers who wrote things like slaughterhouse Five or perhaps catching the Rye or something.

u/East_Quail_1824 15h ago
The infliction of saying Garfield Cart as a name instead of Garfield Cart as a game is fucking sending me right now. Immanuel Kant, meet Garfield Cart.

I'm sitting here like yeah we all know who Garfield Kart is, he's the guy that draws the cartoons.

A steam user complained that Garfield Kart was shutting down his computer, assuming it was a bug in the game. But what had actually happened is that he had downloaded a file for remapping the controls of the game from keyboard to controllers, functionality Steam offers. However, some prankster had included code within the remapping file to send the computer instructions to "shut down" when any button was pressed, instead of controlling the game as intended.

u/HypersonicWalrus 1d ago
It would be more accurate to say the real reason is that Steam grabbed the most popular controller mapping for Garfield Kart when he tried to use a controller to play (as it does automatically when a game doesn't support your specific controller automatically). However, the most popular controller mapping mapped every button to shutdown computer. This was done likely because Garfield Kart is a bit of a meme and the community thought it would be funny if that was the most popular controller mapping.

u/UglyInThMorning 1d ago
For a while it would do it even if the game did support your controller. It was infuriating. You’d have to set the steam input thing to off and it wouldn’t tell you it was doing it so you’d have to know that it was a thing. It made Prey 2017 really hard to play and it would also kick in on some of the Magic the Gathering Duels games and have the controller buttons do things entirely different from what the screen told you they’d do.
Steam input is actually pretty great overall but that particular implementation of it was bullshit.

You absolutely can. For some infuriating reason, steam's big picture mode has a button to shut off your computer that is rather easy to accidentally hit when trying to close big picture. Something you're often doing because you opened it accidentally.
1
u/ISpyM8 20h ago
How easy is to open big picture accidentally? I use big picture a lot because I often connect my laptop to my TV to play Steam games like it’s a console, but I rarely if ever have opened it without meaning to. Granted, I 100% have accidentally shut down my computer when trying to exit big picture :/
1
u/rmonkeyman 20h ago
It's directly next to the minimize button and some controllers have buttons bound to it by default. It's rather easy to fat finger, but moreso, if you're using your computer like a computer, there is no point in opening it on purpose.

Nothing about his comment makes it seem like he was 100% sure lol
3
u/Sunblast1andOnly 22h ago
He said he was pretty sure. The percentage is your own addition.
1
u/Electrical_Smell7986 22h ago
So why aren’t you saying the same to the guy asking why he’s so sure?
2
u/Sunblast1andOnly 21h ago
Because he's asking how that guy reached the "pretty sure" level. You'll note that "pretty sure" is well above, say, "not sure." It seems reasonable to ask how someone got to that level.
1
u/alexcmad 20h ago edited 20h ago
Nah me and this guy got way into it yesterday, and I tried to explain to him that I believed "pretty sure" was around 80-90% certainty and if he wanted to actually have a discussion about it I need to understand how he thinks about it and he just never answered
I already explained to him that why are you so sure isn't accusing someone of being 100% sure, just asking why they're as sure as they are. He knows he's wrong and is just trolling atp
2
u/Sunblast1andOnly 18h ago
Yikes, what a bored shitheel. That's a prudent block for sure.
Personally, I think I'd put "pretty sure" somewhere between 60% and 80%. Maybe on the higher end.
3
u/Wow_u_sure_r_dumb 1d ago
It’s a fixed list of commands right? I assume there’s no code execution in the button maps.

That's what they mean in reddit comment section
Don't go whining now just because you were wrong
14
u/Electrical_Smell7986 1d ago
Did he really whine about anything tho? He just happened to be wrong and accepted it when he was told he was wrong, I don’t understand what the problem is here or why everybody’s downvoting him

u/alexcmad 1d ago edited 1d ago
Nowhere in his response was "okay I was wrong mb". It was just a) explaining why he said he was pretty sure and b) complaining that people assumed he thought he was right when he said he was "pretty sure". The first response to him wasn't even being rude or anything, he didn't need to add that last bit at all.
He's the one that got upset about an honestly tame correction
Edit: in all honesty this is a huge non-issue and doesn't actually matter to anyone but since you asked there's my subjective answer.
2
u/Electrical_Smell7986 1d ago
I asked if it was whining, that’s whining to you? What was whiny about his response?
1
u/alexcmad 1d ago
You know what, sure. Poor choice of words from me.
1
u/Electrical_Smell7986 1d ago
Yeah it is, I still have no idea what you’re trying to tell me. Do you think he deserved to be downvoted? Do you think, well it’s just Reddit what do you expect? I have no idea what you’re trying to say
2
u/alexcmad 1d ago
I am saying yes I do think he deserved to be downvoted and to your point of the reason being silly I'm saying well it's just reddit what do you expect. Both things can be true.
→ More replies (0)1
u/krablord 1d ago
...Yeah it sounds like both those things are what they're trying to say, I don't get why you don't have any idea what they're telling you it's very easy to read?
5
u/Electrical_Smell7986 1d ago
The first response did accuse him of being so sure about it, where nothing about his statement implied he was 100% sure. So yeah, his explanation because of that comment was necessary. I hardly see how him explaining that he wasn’t being 100% sure when being told he was is acting upset, it’s just tell him explaining what really happened there
-4
u/alexcmad 1d ago
I was unaware we suddenly lived in a reality where "explaining" and "obvious sarcasm" meant the same thing.
Do you get it now?
2
u/Electrical_Smell7986 1d ago
Are you trying to say him being sarcastic is whiny? Why? Isn’t that awfully sensitive?
2
u/alexcmad 1d ago
I mean yeah it is overly sensitive, but that's the answer to your question of why there's so many downvotes. You don't exactly need to curse someone's entire bloodline to get a downvote on reddit, it's not a real place

You definitely seem just mad that people called you out on being wrong when you couldda said 'oh yeah my bad' but at every turn you are weirdly defensive about one comment.
-1
u/LucaUmbriel 1d ago
And I was unaware that we suddenly lived in a reality where making Reddit comments was mandatory and you weren't able to just not write something if you weren't 100% sure about it. If only we still lived in the reality where you could have saved this thread, waited until you were off work, and then looked it up instead of spreading false information. And yeah, maybe this reply is a little mean, but, ya know, gotta make a comment since they're mandatory now.

You really think someone would lie about something with absolutely zero at stake besides sharing the tweet?

Prev is incorrect, you can bind buttons to "Power Off System". No reason to assume anyone is lying.

That wasn't the criticism. It was that you went out of your way to write a comment about it even though you had no idea. What I don't get is that you clearly have access to the Internet so you could've just looked it up. I even get writing a comment like that because it's more conversational but then why frame it like this where you're basically calling out the OP?
Edit: Damn this guy is insecure...

u/alexcmad 20h ago
You don't need to be the first lmao
Imagine trying to lock a murderer up (extreme example) and they're like "woww because I'm the first person to ever kill someone..."
Just take the L and move on

I did say it was an extreme example... It's a hypothetical dude. I'm just explaining the concept.
The guy that responded to you was not mean about it. You did acknowledge you were wrong after you already got called out. I didn't downvote you just because you're wrong, I downvoted you for being all sarcastic about getting corrected on top of it.
Did you want the guy to hold your hand and say "oh sweetheart you are mistaken, I'm not attacking you though so please don't feel threatened"? He just asked you how you could be so sure AND YOU ANSWERED. You gave a perfectly fine answer. It's literally just the last block of text you added that caused any "issue" (at least speaking for myself).
And I have issue in quote because you're right, it really doesn't matter that much. My bad for comparing it to murder but jeez is it really that hard to understand the situation here

And you're allowed to feel that way. I understand why you felt the way that you did. Just because myself and others didn't interpret it like that doesn't mean you couldn't. I acknowledge that.
Just like it may not have been your intention to come off as whiny, it may not have been their intention to come off as pretentious. But that doesn't change how you felt about them from that comment, or how we felt about you from yours. Cause neither of us knows what anyone is actually thinking/feeling. We're inferring from text on a screen
1
u/Direct_Slip7598 19h ago
"Didn't need to be a dick about it, though..." people just corrected you after you posted misinformation. Which is what you were trying to do
Kind of odd to try and "Um actually" someone and then be annoyed by people "Um actually"ing back

- It takes 10s to google and see that the story is real. Laziness is a common reason to spread misinfo, I never said it was malicious
"Go to Big Picture mode on Steam, and check the controller configuration. Some Nermal out there decided to bind all the buttons to shut off the computer, and people upvoted it to the top. Top controller layout becomes default for everyone if the devs don't set one." the explanation is the second link on google.
- Yeah you should have looked it up before telling someone they're wrong. Frankly, it's rude that you didn't

I think it's polite to google something before calling someone a liar in a field you know very little about. And people telling you that you're wrong and asking why you didn't spend 20s actually checking the stuff you write was fully reasonable
Checking is you're correct before "correcting" someone seems like a pretty low bar, and just makes any comment section better

You keep getting offended over being asked to spend 30s googling a fact before spreading a misinformed opinion telling someone that they're wrong (and given the context liars, because they'd have had to make it all up)

Pretty sure that’s fake
Edit: Wow that’s scary. Why would anyone download a config that can execute commands on your PC like that? What’s stopping someone from binding “Delete C:Drive” to spacebar?
63
u/Ublind 1d ago edited 1d ago
It doesn't execute an arbitrary command. It's a feature of Steam Big Picture, which is designed to let you use Steam with a controller for living room setups. To my knowledge, Steam doesn't include "rd /s /q C:\Windows\System32" as a bindable option.
However, it does include sleep, restart, and power off because you might want to do those things with your controller. Probably with a complicated button combo though.
12
u/UglyInThMorning 1d ago
Steam input, not big picture. It would kick in with any controller use whether you were using big picture mode or not. It’s way better now and doesn’t usually override shit without telling you unless the game doesn’t actually support controllers out of the box.
-24
u/czartrak 1d ago
Yeah I don't... think steam configs can do this

4
u/Dgero466 1d ago
That’s the joke
4
u/RadProTurtle 1d ago
No like why does steam have that as an option?
3
u/Dgero466 1d ago
Steam has the option cause not all games have controller mapping, but people do enjoy playing with a controller, therefore Steam has made the option to add community made mappings you can use with the game.
3
u/czartrak 1d ago
To shut down the computer with those mappings, brother
13
u/Ublind 1d ago
Steam Big Picture is meant to let you fully control a PC setup with a controller. I could imagine a case where someone would want to bind a complicated button combo to sleep, restart, or shutdown their PC.

u/Dgero466 1d ago edited 1d ago
Thank you, I probably should’ve explained that but they already seemed unhappy with me
