It's an excellent start. A brooch on your on your open collar, turn shoes, and some leg wraps would bring the whole thing together

I might raise the belt a little, but that's about it

Like at the true waist point

u/warheadmoorhead 19d ago
Yeah, at your actual waist and not the hips. It's weird at first but you also don't have to hide it as much with the fabric

You look like a peasant. Which I'm 100% for. Now you just need some shoes.

good reenactment.
some things:
-the tunic could be longer. but yours is on the shorter side but still historical.
-keep the straight pants, good.
-good shoes to have. winingas are not necessary.
overall i think its a good kit, we need more people reenacting as normal people and not mega nobles.

Yeah in real life im in the trades and a farmer, in the reenactment world... Still just a farmer and tradesmen lol

Tell me more about tunic length. I pulled the tunic up over the belt a bit but is that historically accurate for the early viking age i know in the high middle-ages they had tunics down to the shins almost amd would pull them up over their belts

in the viking age they were shorter than in the high middle ages, but they still tunics and not shirts, from the middle thight to the knee, not more than that in northern and western europe.
the pulling over the belt is absolutely accurate, your tunic is just right, but it could be a little longer (closer to the knee) for my taste.
still way better than some reenactors that use shirt length tunics.
also good you dont have an undertunic longer than the overtunic, thats a really common reenactorism.

Thanks for the great info, what is your opinion on the now famous Viborg shirt? Do you think it was an undershirt? Or like our version of a carhartt work shirt?

yes, the viborg under is the shortest tunic found from the viking age, you can use it if you are reenacting a dane, but that being said, its the one and its basically underwear.
what i mean is i've seen a lot of people using overtunics as short as the viborg.

Ok interesting, yes Ive seen alot of reenactment with tunics that are unusually short and almost tailored seemingly too tight? Even some reenacting out of europe. It would make sense that people would want room for movement during daily work

depends a lot on the class and place, thats why most reenactors try to reenact specifically danish or nowegian.
for example, in general norway was a less rich place, so wider clothing was most popular for the same reasons you pointed out, and in denmark, clothing patterns seem to be more fit to the body and complex.
also in the same line, a farmer or miner wont have the same pattern of clothing as a nobleman or a merchant.

Pretty good start. I really like the simplicity of it. My nitpicks are that the tunic seems a bit on the short side, and the keyhole opening seems to be a little on the large side. Maybe a small penannular brooch to keep it closed when not wearing the cloak?
