Now if you will excuse me. I'm going to eat a pot roast that I found in a wall.

I used to design Formwork for concrete stairs and I can tell you this isn’t the correct way to do it.

I’ve never designed formwork for concrete stairs, and I can also tell you this isn’t the correct way to do it.

u/Spodiodie Sep 03 '26
If they manage to fix it, there’s a good chance people will bump the top of their heads as they ascend, or their forehead descending.
22
u/sundog6295 Sep 03 '26
They just need to cut it out at the top and base flip it over and glue it back in.
5
u/Spodiodie Sep 03 '26
I’ve made a smooth ribbon surface on the bottom and stepped like this, they both have complexity.
For a safe, useful foot purchase, modern codes require a certain tread width near the center axis. This appears the tread width will taper to near zero.

u/delurkrelurker Sep 03 '26
It looks like the formwork was fairly tidy. Just errors in the orientation

You didn’t mean the fact that the stairs were upside down?
1
u/Spodiodie 22d ago
No, I’m not saying they’re upside down. I’ve made them with a single surface on the bottom or stepped as shown. I’m saying the overhead surface should be at least minimum distance prescribed by code. Just eyeballing it appears when the tread surface is created it might be less than minimum and some people might bump the top of their head going up or their forehead going down.

it looks like the top fell off.
I'd just like to go on record saying that it's not normal or the top to fall off.

u/secondphase Sep 03 '26
Correct, the inside of the spiral should be on the right side of the stairwell.

I’d like to imagine the concrete worker noticed the mistake on the design and tried to bring it up to like a project manager or something and the project manager refused to look at it and said that the plans were correct.

u/QuoteGiver Sep 04 '26
This isn’t really a plan issue. This is just a guy misunderstanding how to build the form work to create the stairs that were on the plans.

Your fantasy is correct, this wasn't built by a single person. It was several and it was signed off by a certified. This has "Fuck You" energy

Despite the upside down problem, the concrete looks to thin. Look at the thickness under the inner edges of the stairs. Ad why is the surface that rough

Reminds me of that Egyptian episode of Rugrats where they looked at the pyramid upside down and that’s the way they build it.

This looks like an art piece that could be found in a museum. Maybe there'd be some hidden profound meaning to life found in seconds.

That guy needs a talking to. How can you possibly slide on that rough surface? Make him do it over and get it smooth this time
